Book excerpt: Written specifically for the experienced nurse enrolled in an RN-to-BSN program, this text guides nurses through an interactive critical thinking process to become effective and confident nurse leaders. All nurses involved with direct patient care already rely on similar strategies to oversee patient safety, make care decisions, and integrate plan of care in collaboration with patients and families. This text expands upon that knowledge and provides a firm base to reach the next steps in academia and practice, enabling the BSN-prepared nurse to tackle serious issues in care delivery with a high level of self-awareness and skill. Leadership and Management Competence in Nursing Practice relies on a keen understanding of what experienced nurses already bring to the classroom. This text provides a core framework and useful skills and strategies to successfully lead nursing and healthcare forward. Clear, concise chapters cover leadership skills and personal attributes of leaders with minimal repetition of material covered in associate’s degree programs. Content builds on the framework of AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education, IOM Competencies, and QSEN KSAs. Each chapter presents case scenarios to promote critical thinking and decision-making. Book excerpt: Being a nurse was a life-changing experience for me. I chose a career that gave me a new identity; but more importantly, I learned how to help people. It was a very fulfilling career, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to give it a whirl. Many of the nurses and doctors I worked with over the years have passed on to the other side. I would read the news of their passing with great sadness. I remembered their voices, their faces, and the many experiences we had together. It is bittersweet to realize that I will never see them again, never share a workload with them, never hear their voice again. I miss them all and have been blessed by their all-too-brief presence in my life. This has been a most rewarding journey for me, and I sincerely hope you decide to explore a career in the health professions. Best wishes on your success in whatever career you choose.

Book Nineteenth Century British Women s Education 1840 1900 v6

Download or read book Nineteenth Century British Women s Education 1840 1900 v6 written by Susan Hamilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth Century British Women's Education brings together key documents in the Victorian feminist campaign to establish and improve girls’ and women’s education. Drawing widely on articles from the feminist and established press, government papers, newspapers, professional and association journals, as well as memoirs, addresses, pamphlets and reviews, this collection gives researchers access to nineteenth-century debates on improving girls’ and women’s education and women’s work as educators. The collection is divided overall into two sections, both of which incorporate materials that argue for the improvement of girls’ and women’s education as well as arguments made against education for girls and women. In examining the campaign to establish higher education for women, the first volumes include the writings of such primary figures as Emily Davies, Lydia Becker, Barbara Bodichon, Jessie Boucherett, Josephine Butler, Frances Power Cobbe, Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Maria Grey and Emily Shirreff in addition to illustrating the significance of institutions such as Girton and Newnham Colleges. Later volumes document women's work as educators, and include writings by Mary Carpenter, Dorothea Beale, Frances Mary Buss, and the Shirreff sisters Maria and Emily, gifted educators of girls at the elementary and secondary levels, and women whose educational practice embodied the arguments they made on behalf of girls’ education. These volumes also chart the importance of the Governesses’ Benevolent Institution, the Schools Inquiry Commission and the Journal of Women’s Education Union in charting the increasing organization and professionalization of women teachers. Edited and with new introductions by Susan Hamilton and Janice Schroeder, Nineteenth Century British Women's Education is destined to be an invaluable reference resource to all future scholars of feminism and the history of education.

Book Nursing Homes Explained

Download or read book Nursing Homes Explained written by Delia Marie Franklin and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will help readers understand more about gerontological nursing, how the different nursing specialties interact, and the necessity for multidisciplinary team approaches to improve systems in the industry. The book also highlights some of the many individuals who have contributed to reaching for higher care levels in nursing homes. Innovative processes such as the Eden Alternative and the Quality Indicator Survey process are introduced, which will assist people to understand the wide range of ways in which the system can be improved. As the author emphasizes throughout the book, the psychology of "kindness" is essential and needs to be demonstrated by everyone in the gerontological field, from care-providers to families and patients. Emotions can run high as patients and families may be frightened, confused, and concerned about making good decisions, while the care providers are themselves working hard to provide appropriate care while coping with multiple demands. Consideration and humor are, in fact, most important for creating a positive atmosphere for those in nursing homes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first to describe women medical practitioners other than midwives in the colonial period, emphasizes that medical care was part of every woman's work. The Healer's Calling uses memorable anecdotes, engaging characters, and medical oddities to tell the fascinating story of the practice of household medicine in early America. Rebecca J. Tannenbaum points out that housewives provided much of the medical care available in the seventeenth century. Elite women cared for the indigent in their towns and used medical practice to make influential connections with powerful men; "doctresses" or "doctor women" supported themselves with their practices and competed directly with male physicians; and midwives were crucial "expert witnesses" in cases of fornication, murder, and witchcraft. Yet there were limits to the authority of women's healing communities, with consequences for those who overstepped the bounds. By setting women's practice in the context of contemporary medicine, gender roles, and community norms, Tannenbaum also reveals the relationship between women's medical practice and witchcraft accusations. Tannenbaum examines colonial America's full range of medical options—including the work of classically trained male doctors and male lay practitioners—with a keen eye to the interactions and tensions between men and women in the realm of healing.
