Book Comparison of Analyzed Sea Surface Temperatures with Observed Data jan feb 1966

Download or read book Comparison of Analyzed Sea Surface Temperatures with Observed Data jan feb 1966 written by Mitchell K Shank (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six hundred and sixty-six sea surface temperature (SST) measurements acquired aboard the USNS JAMES M. GILLISS (T-AGOR-4) during January - February 1966 were compared to values interpolated from synoptic SST analyses prepared by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) and the Fleet Numerical Weather Facility (FNWF) and to climatological averages for the same period. Observational area was the western North Atlantic. None of the analyses duplicated the observed distribution to a notable degree, although major trends were indicated correctly in every case. NAVOCEANO's subjectively prepared synoptic analysis was the only one to position and scale strong gradients, or fronts, successfully; this analysis also had the least absolute error and standard deviation. Book Potential Impact of Satellite Data on Sea Surface Temperature Analysis

Download or read book Potential Impact of Satellite Data on Sea Surface Temperature Analysis written by John C. Wilkerson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sea surface temperature field of a 10 x 20 degree area of the North Atlantic is constructed from synoptic temperatures of the ocean surface obtained from High Resolution Infrared Radiometer (HRIR) data from NIMBUS II meteorological satellite. The computer analysis of these satellite data is compared with the computer analysis of three and one half days of conventional ship data produced for the same time period by the Fleet Numerical Weather Central (FNWC), Monterey, California, with a manual analysis of the same ship data prepared by the Fleet Weather Central, Norfolk, Virginia, and with an experimental numerical analysis done by NAVOCEANO. Book Sea Surface Temperature Synoptic Analysis

Download or read book Sea Surface Temperature Synoptic Analysis written by Blair W. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is described for preparing detailed sea surface temperature analyses for large ocean areas. These analyses utilize injection tempera ture observations taken by commercial ships. The inadequacies of analyses based on averaged data and some difficulties inherent in contouring scalar fields are discussed. Sea surface temperatures are interpreted according to some concepts derived from cross-sectional profiles and surface current data. Isotach analyses of mean current drift are considered as flow pat terns to aid temperature analysis in areas where data are sparse. (Author).

Book Experimental Objective Analysis and Numerical Prediction of Sea Surface Temperature

Download or read book Experimental Objective Analysis and Numerical Prediction of Sea Surface Temperature written by William H. Gemmill and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office has under development computer objective analysis and numerical prediction models for oceanic variables. This paper discusses sea surface temperature primarily. Several methods for improving objective analysis of sea surface temperature have been investigated. The analysis procedure is capable of performing fixed operations on the data. The exact order and number of operations is tested through experimentation to develop the best analysis. The subjective analyst's experience is incorporated into the analysis by digitizing a subjective (hand-drawn) chart. A method for incorporating advection into the analysis is also being developed. Numerical prediction schemes have been developed from three approaches: statistical prediction, heat budget prediction, and dynamic prediction. Dynamic prediction based on the equivalent-barotropic model appears to be the most promising approach. Preliminary results indicate that the model can predict correct wave speeds, meanders, and transport in the Gulf Stream. (Author).
