Book excerpt: Seismically-induced rock-slope failures have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people and economic losses in the billions over the last century. They are among the most common, dangerous, and still today, least understood of all seismic hazards. This research aims to further the understanding of seismically-induced rock-slope failure by studying the initiation and growth of fractures in rock-slopes during seismic loading. The Bonded Particle Model, which is commonly used in the static simulation of complex rock mechanics applications, is extended for use in fully-dynamic 2-dimensional simulation of rock-slopes. Using this model, the influence of ground motion characteristics and structural geology on the behavior and performance of rock-slopes during earthquakes is explored. The results show that dynamic stresses that develop within rock-slopes make the face of the slope particularly susceptible to damage. As damage accumulates in rock-slopes during dynamic loading, slopes can soften and become more sensitive to lower frequency input. Loading amplitude and frequency have a substantial impact on the seismic performance of rock-slopes, and this impact is highly dependent on the internal geologic structure of the rock-slope. The model results are consistent with observations of several historical earthquake-induced rock-slope failure events, and provide insight into the fundamental mechanisms behind seismically-induced rock-slope failures.

It describes the design of a three-dimensional, unified plasticity model for large post-liquefaction shear deformation of sand, formulated and implemented for parallel computing. It also presents a three-dimensional, dynamic finite element analysis method for piles in liquefiable ground, developed on the basis of this model,. Employing a combination of case analysis, centrifuge shaking table experiments and numerical simulations using the proposed methods, it demonstrates the seismic response patterns of single piles in liquefiable ground. These include basic force-resistance mode, kinematic and inertial interaction coupling mechanism and major influence factors. It also discusses a beam on the nonlinear Winkler foundation (BNWF) solution and a modified neutral plane solution developed and validated using centrifuge experiments for piles in consolidating and reconsolidating ground. Lastly, it studies axial pile force and settlement during post-earthquake reconsolidation, showing pile axial force to be irrelevant in the reconsolidation process, while settlement is process dependent.

Book excerpt: The slope failure is a large deformation problem, the traditional numerical method finite element method (FEM), and limit equilibrium method (LEM) is difficult to characterize the whole process of the failure, resulting in the mechanism analysis which is not clear. In this work, a mesh-free particle approach, named the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, is presented and is improved to analyze the damage and failure process of a rock slope. In order to better describe the cause and mechanism of brittle failure for rock slope, the plastic factor was suggested and introduced into the SPH algorithm, and the conservation equations of SPH for brittleness characteristics were obtained. For soil slope, its instability mechanism and failure mode are different from that of rock slope. Therefore, this work also introduces the application of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method in the instability evolution process of soil slope. Firstly, an improved method for solving the SPH safety factor based on the adaptive discount factor method is proposed, the tolerance value is introduced, the relationship between the displacement increment and the tolerance value of the characteristic point is analyzed, and the real displacement mutation point is determined. Secondly, the SPH numerical model of slope is established to analyze the characteristics of slope deformation and failure, which shows that the SPH method can effectively represent the whole process of slope instability and progressive failure and effectively overcome the disadvantage of non-convergence when the traditional numerical method is used to study the deformation and failure of geotechnical materials.

In this book, an intensity frequency non-stationary stochastic ground motion model based on time-domain stochastic process description is preliminarily established to characterize the randomness of earthquakes. The spatial distribution random field model of geotechnical parameters is established to describe the time-space variability of geotechnical parameters. Based on the basic theory of stochastic dynamics, the seismic stability performance evaluation method of slope is established. The slope seismic dynamic model test based on large complex shaking table is performed to verify and modify the proposed framework and method. This book sheds new light on the development of nonlinear seismic stochastic dynamics and seismic design of slope engineering.
