Book Convection diffusion Problems

Download or read book Convection diffusion Problems written by Martin Stynes and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many physical problems involve diffusive and convective (transport) processes. When diffusion dominates convection, standard numerical methods work satisfactorily. But when convection dominates diffusion, the standard methods become unstable, and special techniques are needed to compute accurate numerical approximations of the unknown solution. This convection-dominated regime is the focus of the book. After discussing at length the nature of solutions to convection-dominated convection-diffusion problems, the authors motivate and design numerical methods that are particularly suited to this c.

Book Nonstandard Finite Difference Schemes Methodology And Applications

Download or read book Nonstandard Finite Difference Schemes Methodology And Applications written by Ronald E Mickens and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Nonstandard Finite Difference Models of Differential Equations provides an update on the progress made in both the theory and application of the NSFD methodology during the past two and a half decades. In addition to discussing details related to the determination of the denominator functions and the nonlocal discrete representations of functions of dependent variables, we include many examples illustrating just how this should be done.Of real value to the reader is the inclusion of a chapter listing many exact difference schemes, and a chapter giving NSFD schemes from the research literature. The book emphasizes the critical roles played by the 'principle of dynamic consistency' and the use of sub-equations for the construction of valid NSFD discretizations of differential equations.

Book Additive Runge Kutta Schemes for Convection diffusion reaction Equations

Download or read book Additive Runge Kutta Schemes for Convection diffusion reaction Equations written by Christopher Alan Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive Runge-Kutta (ARK) methods are investigated for application to the spatially discretized one-dimensional convection-diffusion-reaction (CDR) equations. First, accuracy, stability, conservation, and dense output are considered for the general case when N different Runge-Kutta methods are grouped into a single composite method. Then, implicit-explicit, N=2, additive Runge-Kutta ARK methods from third- to fifth-order are presented that allow for integration of stiff terms by an L-stable, stiffly-accurate explicit, singly diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (ESDIRK) method while the nonstiff terms are integrated with a traditional explicit Runge-Kutta method (ERK). Coupling error terms are of equal order to those of the elemental methods. Derived ARK methods have vanishing stability functions for very large values of the stiff scaled eigenvalue and retain high stability efficiency in the absence of stiffness.

Book Applications of Nonstandard Finite Difference Schemes

Download or read book Applications of Nonstandard Finite Difference Schemes written by Ronald E. Mickens and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to provide a concise introduction to the methods and philosophy of constructing nonstandard finite difference schemes and illustrate how such techniques can be applied to several important problems. Chapter I gives an overview of the subject and summarizes previous work. Chapters 2 and 3 consider in detail the construction and numerical implementation of schemes for physical problems involving convection-diffusion-reaction equations, that arise in groundwater pollution and scattering of electromagnetic waves using Maxwell's equations. Chapter 4 examines certain mathematical issues related to the nonstandard discretization of competitive and cooperative models for ecology. The application chapters illustrate well the power of nonstandard methods. In particular, for the same accuracy as obtained by standard techniques, larger step sizes can be used. This volume will satisfy the needs of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who wish to know how to construct nonstandard schemes and see how these are applied to obtain numerical solutions of the differential equations which arise in the study of nonlinear dynamical systems modeling important physical phenomena.

Book The Nature of Mathematical Modeling

Download or read book The Nature of Mathematical Modeling written by Neil A. Gershenfeld and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the nature of mathematical modeling, and about the kinds of techniques that are useful for modeling. The text is in four sections. The first covers exact and approximate analytical techniques; the second, numerical methods; the third, model inference based on observations; and the last, the special role of time in modeling. Each of the topics in the book would be the worthy subject of a dedicated text, but only by presenting the material in this way is it possible to make so much material accessible to so many people. Each chapter presents a concise summary of the core results in an area. The text is complemented by extensive worked problems.

Book Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics written by Dale R. Durran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations, with focus on atmospheric and oceanic flows. The book covers both the essentials of building a numerical model and the more sophisticated techniques that are now available. Finite difference methods, spectral methods, finite element method, flux-corrected methods and TVC schemes are all discussed. Throughout, the author keeps to a middle ground between the theorem-proof formalism of a mathematical text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. The book establishes a concrete link between theory and practice using an extensive range of test problems to illustrate the theoretically derived properties of various methods. From the reviews: "...the books unquestionable advantage is the clarity and simplicity in presenting virtually all basic ideas and methods of numerical analysis currently actively used in geophysical fluid dynamics." Book PETSc for Partial Differential Equations Numerical Solutions in C and Python

Download or read book PETSc for Partial Differential Equations Numerical Solutions in C and Python written by Ed Bueler and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation (PETSc) is an open-source library of advanced data structures and methods for solving linear and nonlinear equations and for managing discretizations. This book uses these modern numerical tools to demonstrate how to solve nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) in parallel. It starts from key mathematical concepts, such as Krylov space methods, preconditioning, multigrid, and Newton’s method. In PETSc these components are composed at run time into fast solvers. Discretizations are introduced from the beginning, with an emphasis on finite difference and finite element methodologies. The example C programs of the first 12 chapters, listed on the inside front cover, solve (mostly) elliptic and parabolic PDE problems. Discretization leads to large, sparse, and generally nonlinear systems of algebraic equations. For such problems, mathematical solver concepts are explained and illustrated through the examples, with sufficient context to speed further development. PETSc for Partial Differential Equations addresses both discretizations and fast solvers for PDEs, emphasizing practice more than theory. Well-structured examples lead to run-time choices that result in high solver performance and parallel scalability. The last two chapters build on the reader’s understanding of fast solver concepts when applying the Firedrake Python finite element solver library. This textbook, the first to cover PETSc programming for nonlinear PDEs, provides an on-ramp for graduate students and researchers to a major area of high-performance computing for science and engineering. It is suitable as a supplement for courses in scientific computing or numerical methods for differential equations.

Book Difference Schemes With High Order of Accuracy for Solving Hyperbolic Equations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Difference Schemes With High Order of Accuracy for Solving Hyperbolic Equations Classic Reprint written by Peter D. Lax and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Difference Schemes With High Order of Accuracy for Solving Hyperbolic Equations It is well Known that a difference scheme, in order to furnish accurate answers over a reasonably long range of time has to be stable. The bulk of this paper is devoted to determining the conditions under which the proposed dif ference schemes are stable. In Section 1 we give a brief review of the general theory of accuracy and stability of difference schemes. In Section 2 we show that the set of matrices whose field of value belongs to the unit circle forms a stable family. Book Traveling Wave Analysis of Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Traveling Wave Analysis of Partial Differential Equations written by Graham Griffiths and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Partial Differential Equations (PDE) models that are now studied are usually beyond traditional mathematical analysis, the numerical methods that are being developed and used require testing and validation. This is often done with PDEs that have known, exact, analytical solutions. The development of analytical solutions is also an active area of research, with many advances being reported recently, particularly traveling wave solutions for nonlinear evolutionary PDEs. Thus, the current development of analytical solutions directly supports the development of numerical methods by providing a spectrum of test problems that can be used to evaluate numerical methods. This book surveys some of these new developments in analytical and numerical methods, and relates the two through a series of PDE examples. The PDEs that have been selected are largely "named'' since they carry the names of their original contributors. These names usually signify that the PDEs are widely recognized and used in many application areas. The authors' intention is to provide a set of numerical and analytical methods based on the concept of a traveling wave, with a central feature of conversion of the PDEs to ODEs.
