Book Numerical Solution of 3D Navier Stokes Equations with Upwind Implicit Schemes

Download or read book Numerical Solution of 3D Navier Stokes Equations with Upwind Implicit Schemes written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An upwind MUSCL type implicit scheme for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is presented. Comparison between different approximate Riemann solvers (Roe and Osher) are performed and the influence of the reconstructions schemes on the accuracy of the solution as well as on the convergence of the method is studied. A new limiter is introduced in order to remove the problems usually associated with non-linear upwind schemes. The implementation of a diagonal upwind implicit operator for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is also discussed. Finally the turbulence modeling is assessed. Good prediction of separated flows are demonstrated if a non-equilibrium turbulence model is used. Marx, Yves P. Langley Research Center...

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important applications of finite difference lies in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In particular, the solution to the Navier-Stokes equation grants us insight into the behavior of many physical systems. The 2-D and 3-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equation has been studied extensively due to its analogous nature to many practical applications, and several numerical schemes have been developed to provide solutions dedicated to different environmental conditions (such as different Reynolds numbers). This research also covers the assignment of boundary conditions, starting with the simple case of driven cavity flow problem. In addition, several parts of the equations are given implicitly, which requires efficient ways of solving large systems of equations. We also considered numerical solution methods for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized on staggered grids in general coordinates. Numerical experiments are carried out on a vector computer. Robustness and efficiency of these methods are studied. It appears that good methods result from suitable combinations of multigrid methods.Numerically solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is known to be time-consuming and expensive; hence this research presents some MATLAB codes for obtaining numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flow through flow cavities, using method of lines, in three-dimensional space (3-D). The code treats the laminar flow over a two-dimensional backward-facing step, and the results of the computations over the backward-facing step are in excellent agreement with experimental results.

Book Numerical Solution of the Incompressible Navier Stokes Equations

Download or read book Numerical Solution of the Incompressible Navier Stokes Equations written by L. Quartapelle and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents different formulations of the equations governing incompressible viscous flows, in the form needed for developing numerical solution procedures. The conditions required to satisfy the no-slip boundary conditions in the various formulations are discussed in detail. Rather than focussing on a particular spatial discretization method, the text provides a unitary view of several methods currently in use for the numerical solution of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, using either finite differences, finite elements or spectral approximations. For each formulation, a complete statement of the mathematical problem is provided, comprising the various boundary, possibly integral, and initial conditions, suitable for any theoretical and/or computational development of the governing equations. The text is suitable for courses in fluid mechanics and computational fluid dynamics. It covers that part of the subject matter dealing with the equations for incompressible viscous flows and their determination by means of numerical methods. A substantial portion of the book contains new results and unpublished material.

Book Navier Stokes Equations

Download or read book Navier Stokes Equations written by Roger Temam and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navier-Stokes Equations: Theory and Numerical Analysis focuses on the processes, methodologies, principles, and approaches involved in Navier-Stokes equations, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and mathematical analysis to which CFD is grounded. The publication first takes a look at steady-state Stokes equations and steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. Topics include bifurcation theory and non-uniqueness results, discrete inequalities and compactness theorems, existence and uniqueness theorems, discretization of Stokes equations, existence and uniqueness for the Stokes equations, and function spaces. The text then examines the evolution of Navier-Stokes equations, including linear case, compactness theorems, alternate proof of existence by semi-discretization, and discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations. The book ponders on the approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations by the projection and compressibility methods; properties of the curl operator and application to the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations; and implementation of non-conforming linear finite elements. The publication is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the theory and numerical analysis of Navier-Stokes equations.

Book Implicit Algorithm for Numerical Solution of the Laminar Incompressible Two Dimensional Navier Stokes Equations

Download or read book Implicit Algorithm for Numerical Solution of the Laminar Incompressible Two Dimensional Navier Stokes Equations written by D. P. Rizzetta and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical procedure is presented for solution of the laminar incompressible two dimensional Navier Stokes equations written in terms of the stream function and vorticity. The full implicit unified method is capable of treating both steady and unsteady flows. The governing equations are solved in conservation form, incorporating a general transformation of the independent variables so that arbitrary geometrical configurations may be considered. In the steady case, the algorithm corresponds identically to Newton's method as applied to the solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. For unsteady flows, the procedure is second order accurate temporally as well as spatially. An analysis of a model system of equations is provided which indicates numerical stability. Utility of the method is verified by calculation of representative examples of both steady and unsteady flow fields. These include the classic driven cavity problem and the unsteady flow about a circular cylinder. Results of these computations are compared with previous numerical solutions as well as with experimental data. Keywords; Navier Stokes equations; Computational fluid dynamics; Newton's method. Book An Implicit Numerical Method for the Multidimensional Compressible Navier Stokes Equations

Download or read book An Implicit Numerical Method for the Multidimensional Compressible Navier Stokes Equations written by W. Roger Briley and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to exploit the favorable stability properties of implicit methods and thereby increase computational efficiency by taking large time steps, an implicit finite-difference method for the multidimensional Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The method is based on a fully-implicit backward time difference scheme which is linearized by Taylor expansion about the known time level to produce a set of coupled linear difference equations which are valid for a given time step. To solve these difference equations, the Douglas-Gunn procedure for generating alternating-direction implicit (ADI) schemes as perturbations of fundamental implicit difference schemes is introduced. The resulting sequence of one-dimensional equations can be solved efficiently by standard block-elimination methods. The method is a one-step method, as opposed to a predictor-corrector method, and requires no iteration to compute the solution for a single time step. The stability and accuracy of the method are examined in a three-dimensional application to subsonic flow in a straight duct with rectangular cross section. (Modified author abstract).
