Book Numerical Simulations for Classification of Blast Loaded Laminated Glass

Download or read book Numerical Simulations for Classification of Blast Loaded Laminated Glass written by Alexander Stolz and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is important to protect critical buildings (shopping centres, government buildings and embassies), infrastructure and utilities, train and underground stations against being damaged, destroyed or disrupted by deliberate acts of terrorism, criminal activity and malicious behaviour. Normal regulations and building guidelines do not generally take into account these threats. The introduction of appropriate regulations or guidelines, where deemed necessary, should, enhance the resilience of buildings and infrastructure against explosion incidents. In order to protect the built infrastructure, methods are required to quantify the resistance of structural components against explosive loading and to assess the hazards resulting from the failure of an element. The applicable state-of-the-art techniques may include either experimental or numerical methods, or a combination of both.^Therefore, the thematic group (TG) on the resistance of structures to explosion effects was formed in order to bring the required expertise together, make it commonly available and to find and define harmonised methods and solutions which can be provided to the decision-makers responsible for critical infrastructure protection. The current report summarizes existing best practices for the numerical finite element modelling of blast loading, including the important topics of domain discretisation, implicit/explicit formulation, Lagrangian/Eulerian solvers, the mathematical description of the material behaviour etc. Furthermore recommendations for the modelling of laminated glass elements are formulated and knowledge gaps in this application area are pointed out. Hence the report builds the basis for an actual evaluation of the different numerical methods, their suitability to certain problems, and their capability to support/complement the experimental testing of glass components.^It thus provides helpful information to design architects and engineers, and more generally to critical infrastructure stakeholders, responsible for the structural integrity and security of the infrastructure in case of an explosion.

Book A Set of Essential Requirements Towards Standardising the Numerical Simulation of Blast loaded Windows and Facades

Download or read book A Set of Essential Requirements Towards Standardising the Numerical Simulation of Blast loaded Windows and Facades written by Martin Larcher and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determination of the blast protection level of laminated glass windows and facades is of crucial importance, and it is normally done by using experimental investigations. In recent years numerical methods have become much more powerful also with respect to this kind of application. This report attempts to give a first idea of a possible standardisation concerning such numerical simulations. Attention is drawn to the representation of the blast loading and of the behaviour of the material of the mentioned products, to the geometrical meshing, as well as to the modelling of the connections of the glass components to the main structure. The need to validate the numerical models against reliable experimental data, some of which are indicated, is underlined.

Book The Micro World Observed by Ultra High Speed Cameras

Download or read book The Micro World Observed by Ultra High Speed Cameras written by Kinko Tsuji and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is about ultra high-speed cameras, which enable us to see what we normally do not see. These are objects that are moving very fast, or that we just ignore. Ultra high-speed cameras invite us to a wonderland of microseconds. There Alice (the reader) meets a ultra high-speed rabbit (this volume) and travels together through this wonderland from the year 1887 to 2017. They go to the horse riding ground and see how a horse gallops. The rabbit takes her to a showroom where various cameras and illumination devices are presented. Then, he sends Alice into semiconductor labyrinths, wind tunnels, mechanical processing factories, and dangerous explosive fields. Sometimes Alice is large, and at other times she is very small. She sits even inside a car engine. She falls down together with a droplet. She enters a microbubble, is thrown out with a jet stream, and finds herself in a human body. Waking up from her dream, she sees children playing a game: “I see what you do not see, and this is....”. Alice thinks: “The ultra high-speed rabbit showed me many things which I had never seen. Now I will go again to this wonderland, and try to find something new.

Book Analysis of Glass Panels Subjected to Blast Load

Download or read book Analysis of Glass Panels Subjected to Blast Load written by Matthias Förch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present doctoral dissertation contributes to the analysis of glass panels subjected to blast load, concentrating on monolithic and laminated glass prior to glass fracture. A straightforward graphical solution for monolithic glass is presented to identify maximum deformation and maximum principal stress for small and large deformations for static and idealized blast load without software. On the basis of experimental tests, load duration factors kmod for impact and blast load design for annealed glass, heat strengthened glass and fully tempered glass are proposed. In addition, design strength values for impact and blast design based on the European and German standards are suggested. As a result, blast pressure capacity charts for monolithic fully tempered glass plates subjected to idealized blast load are presented. Moreover, design temperatures of interlayer in blast design situation based on empirical data in accordance with Eurocode are determined for vertical double glazed and triple glazed units for Germany, showing that laminated glass should not be regarded with monolithic glass approach in general.

Book Experimental Evaluation of Laminated Glass Interlayer Under High Strain Rates

Download or read book Experimental Evaluation of Laminated Glass Interlayer Under High Strain Rates written by Mouhammed Jessam Lafta and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of blast-resistant glazing in buildings subject to exterior hazards can greatly reduce, if not eliminate, the hazard of flying glass shards. When properly designed, framed, and anchored, blast resistant laminates are capable of maintaining the integrity of the building envelope following an explosion or a hurricane and reducing interior damage. Analytical and experimental research exists in the literature in the area of blast-resistant glazing, but few areas of research remain unexplored related to resistance and blast response of the window system. The material response of the laminated glass under high strain rates has not been fully investigated. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to experimentally evaluate the high strain rate effects of PVB and UVEKOL-S polymers alone and laminated glass sheets using impact drop-weight testing. Virgin PVB as well as UVEKOL-S sheets extracted from laminated glass panels will evaluated in this study. The results of this study are expected to enhance the engineering design methods and numerical modeling of laminated glass windows under blast loading. A drop-weight testing apparatus was designed in this thesis for evaluating PVB and UVEKOL-S and laminated glass samples under various loading rates. Quasi-static testing of the materials was also evaluated to assess the effects of dynamic loading on the engineering response and energy-absorption capabilities of the laminated glazing and interlayer materials. The results show that the dynamic loading significantly affects the material response and the energy absorption characteristics of the interlayer materials. The strain rate variation had a more pronounced effect on the energy and impulse characteristics of the material than the ultimate strength of the polymers. Confined polymers inside scored laminated glass samples had lower dynamic strengths than polymers alone. The results of this thesis provide valuable findings regarding the dynamic response of interlayer polymers, but additional tests are still needed to develop statically reliable results. Also, a wider range of strain rates is recommended for future testing to study the effect on the glazing system under extremely high strain rates.

Book Impact Fracture of Glass The Combined Finite Discrete Element Study

Download or read book Impact Fracture of Glass The Combined Finite Discrete Element Study written by Xudong Chen and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, Suzhou University of Science and Technology, language: English, abstract: This book introduces theoretical and practical aspects for modelling the impact fracture of glass and laminated glass using the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). The FDEM is a branch of the discrete element method (DEM), and combines finite element formulation into individual discrete elements. Thus, contact forces are evaluated more accurately. Regarding the fracture of glass, a Mode I-based smeared crack model is extended and employed in the FDEM, enabling crack initiation and propagation be captured naturally. Based on the employed method and the crack model, numerical examples on fracture of glass under both hard and soft impacts are presented and validated with data from computational and experimental sources. The combined finite-discrete element method is proven to be a reliable and robust tool for examining the impact fracture responses of glass.
