Book High Resolution RANS Simulation of Flow Over a Wall Mounted Square Cylinder

Download or read book High Resolution RANS Simulation of Flow Over a Wall Mounted Square Cylinder written by Aaron Thomas Rinehimer and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) predictions of high Reynolds number oscillating flows have always been a great challenge. Using the experimental data from a study of flow over a wall mounted square cylinder (h = 4d) in Bourgeois et al, the commercial code Star CCM+, with very fine RANS (time averaged Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes model) simulations are performed to try and accurately predict the oscillating wake region. The simulations are evaluated in different aspects to optimize the accuracy in the predictions of the flow field. For the turbulence model study three turbulence models are used for comparison, the Realizable k E with a two-layer blending wall treatment, the k E V2F (All y+ hybrid wall treatment), and the standard k (o model. In virtually all cases the Realizable k s proved to be the far superior model for capturing the flow field. Significant changes in the flow predictions are witnessed from each of the modifications performed on the turbulence model. With these observations a further understanding of the turbulence model is realized which gives greater confidence in the accuracy of the simulations. Further analysis resulted in observation using mesh dependence. Three near wall prism heights o f y + 12, y+ 5, and y+ 1 allowed the mesh to be resolved to the buffer layer, the buffer layer/viscous sublayer overlap region, and finally into the viscous sublayer. After all of these the comparisons once again realizable k E proved to be far superior. Finally a selected number of turbulence model constants were modified within the Realizable k E turbulence model to investigate the effect of these parameters on the accuracy of predictions.

Book Principles of Heat Transfer in Porous Media

Download or read book Principles of Heat Transfer in Porous Media written by M. Kaviany and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the empirical treatment of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous media is over a century old, only in the last three decades has the transport in these heterogeneous systems been addressed in detail. So far, single-phase flows in porous media have been treated or at least formulated satisfactorily, while the subject of two-phase flow and the related heat-transfer in porous media is still in its infancy. This book identifies the principles of transport in porous media and compares the avalaible predictions based on theoretical treatments of various transport mechanisms with the existing experimental results. The theoretical treatment is based on the volume-averaging of the momentum and energy equations with the closure conditions necessary for obtaining solutions. While emphasizing a basic understanding of heat transfer in porous media, this book does not ignore the need for predictive tools; whenever a rigorous theoretical treatment of a phenomena is not avaliable, semi-empirical and empirical treatments are given.

Book Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flows and Noise Generation

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flows and Noise Generation written by Christophe Brun and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is a high-fidelity approach to the numerical simulation of turbulent flows. Recent developments have shown LES to be able to predict aerodynamic noise generation and propagation as well as the turbulent flow, by means of either a hybrid or a direct approach. This book is based on the results of two French/German research groups working on LES simulations in complex geometries and noise generation in turbulent flows. The results provide insights into modern prediction approaches for turbulent flows and noise generation mechanisms as well as their use for novel noise reduction concepts.
