Book Numerical Simulations of the Flowfield in Central Dump Ramjet Combustors 2 Effects of Inlet and Combustor Acoustics

Download or read book Numerical Simulations of the Flowfield in Central Dump Ramjet Combustors 2 Effects of Inlet and Combustor Acoustics written by K. Kailasanath and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A potentially important source of large pressure oscillations in compact ramjets is a combustion instability induced by the interaction of large-scale vortex structures with the acoustic modes of the ramjet. To study these interactions, we have performed time-dependent, compressible numerical simulations of the flow field in an idealized ramjet consisting of an axisymmetric inlet and a combustor. The simulations indicate strong coupling between the flow field and the acoustics of both the inlet and the combustor. For the cases studied, forcing at the first longitudinal acoustic mode of the combustor induces vortex-rollup near the entrance to the combustor at that frequency. A low frequency oscillation is also observed in all the simulations. Pressure and velocity fluctuations in the inlet indicate that the low frequency corresponds to a quarter-wave mode in the inlet. Changing the length of the inlet appropriately changes the observed low frequency. The merging pattern of the inlet is changed. These merging patterns are explained on the basis of an interaction between the vortex-rollup frequency and the acoustic modes of the inlet and combustor. Keywords: Ramjet, Combustion instability, Turbulence. (mjm).

Book Subsonic Combustion Ramjet Design

Download or read book Subsonic Combustion Ramjet Design written by Antonella Ingenito and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a step-by-step methodology for the design of ramjet engines. It explores ramjet combustion, provides guidelines on how to size the engines, and discusses performance analysis. The book begins with an introduction to ramjet design, including fundamental definitions in the field. It then discusses ramjet engine performance, and fuels which can be used. Several types of ramjet engines are then explored, and guidelines for their design are presented, including flame holders, injectors, and combustors. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of the types of materials which should be used for ramjet engines. This book is of interest to engine designers and engineers, researchers, and graduate students, as it collates research in a succinct, clear guide to the issue of designing ramjet engines.

Book Fundamental Modelling of Reacting Flow in Ramjet Dump Combustors

Download or read book Fundamental Modelling of Reacting Flow in Ramjet Dump Combustors written by J. C. Dutt and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calculated results based on the universal two-equation model known as k-epsilon model of turbulence for recirculating, reactive and non-reactive flows in dump combustors (12 in. ID) are presented extending the previous results obtained in this Department. The experimental data on the combustion efficiency, flow fields and recirculation zones for such combustors from the Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory, Ohio and the Arnold Engineering Development Centre, Tennessee have been compared with those predicted by the present modelling procedure and found to be in remarkably good agreement. Book Numerical Simulations of the Flowfield in a Central Dump Ramjet Combustor 1 Tests of the Model and Effects of Forcing

Download or read book Numerical Simulations of the Flowfield in a Central Dump Ramjet Combustor 1 Tests of the Model and Effects of Forcing written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results of numerical simulations of the cold flow in a central dump ramjet combustor. Tests of the boundary conditions and numerical resolutions are used to perform the simulations. The simulations are used to isolate and study the interaction between acoustic waves and large scale vortex structures. A strong coupling between the acoustic modes of the chamber and large scale vortex structures is observed. The results in the early part of the calculations indicate unforced natural vortex growth near the entrance to the combustor (dump plane) at a frequency close to that of the first longitudinal acoustic mode. With time, the acoustic modes shift the frequency of the most amplified vortex rollup mode near the dump plane into resonance with the acoustic mode. The simulations indicate that the location in space where the modes grow can also be shifted by acoustic forcing. An interesting feature observed in the simulations is a low frequency mode corresponding to the arrival of the merged vortex structures at the choked exit. This mode causes major changes in the merging pattern of the vortices.

Book Numerical Simulations of Flowfields in a Central Dump Ramjet Combustor 3 Effects of Chemistry

Download or read book Numerical Simulations of Flowfields in a Central Dump Ramjet Combustor 3 Effects of Chemistry written by Kazhikathra Kailasanath and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the third in a series which presents the results of numerical simulations performed to isolate and study acoustic-vortex-chemical interactions in an idealized ramjet consisting of an axisymmetric inlet and combustor and a choked nozzle. Both reactive and nonreactive flows have been simulated. The nonreactive flow calculations show complex interactions among the natural instability frequency of the shear layer at the inlet-combustor junction and the acoustics of both the inlet and the combustor. The entire flow oscillates at a low frequency which corresponds to that of a quarter-mode in the inlet. For the reactive flow cases studied, energy release alters the flow field substantially. Energy release in a large vortex is in phase with the pressure oscillation over a substantial region of the combustor and results in the observed amplification of the low-frequency oscillations and leads to combustion instability. The large pressure oscillation also modifies the vortex shedding process. Keywords: Ramjet, Turbulence, Combustion instability. (jes).

Book Numerical Simulation of Inlet and Combustor Regions of a Real Shcramjet Flowfield microform

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Inlet and Combustor Regions of a Real Shcramjet Flowfield microform written by Ryan Martens and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical simulation of the three-dimensional flowfield of a shcramjet was performed using the WARP code, in which multispecies Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are closed by the k-o turbulence model and the Wilcox dilational dissipation correction. The hydrogen/air chemical reactions are modeled by Jachimowsky's 9 species, 20 reaction model. This thesis addresses the problem of designing a shock-induced combustion ramjet (shcramjet) engine. Previous studies have investigated cantilevered ramp injectors using a two oblique shock external compression inlet with a hydrogen slot injector to suppress ignition. The present study uses a cowl to generate flow-turning angles of 12° and 16°. The reflected shocks induce combustion after ignition delays of 10.5 cm and 4.5 cm, respectively. It was found that maximum thrust potentials for each case were 203.4 and 218.8 Ns/kg, indicating that an increase in shock strength reduces the ignition delay without contributing to any significant increase in thrust potential.

Book Design and Testing of a Combustor for a Turbo Ramjet Engine for UAV and Missile Applications

Download or read book Design and Testing of a Combustor for a Turbo Ramjet Engine for UAV and Missile Applications written by Ross H. Piper, III and published by . This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An existing freejet facility was upgraded and its range of operation extended into the high subsonic regime for operation as a test rig for the development of a combined-cycle turbo-ramjet engine. A combustor was designed developed and tested as the afterburner for the turbo-ramjet engine. At subsonic speeds with the afterburner running an increase in thrust of 40% was measured over the baseline turbojet running at 80% spool speed. A Computational Fluid Dynamics model of the flow through the shrouded turbojet engine was developed and successfully used to assist in predicting the bypass ratio of the engine at different Mach numbers. Numerous recommendations were made to improve the operation of the test rig to improve the performance of the turbo-ramjet engine and refine the numerical models. These recommended improvements will extend the present capabilities to design and analyze small combined cycle engines which have an application in unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles.
