Book Materials with Complex Behaviour

Download or read book Materials with Complex Behaviour written by Lucas F. M. da Silva and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-17 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common engineering materials reach in many demanding applications such as automotive or aerospace their limits and new developments are required to ful ll increasing demands on performance and characteristics. The properties of ma- rials can be increased for example by combining different materials to achieve better properties than a single constituent or by shaping the material or c- stituents in a speci c structure. Many of these new materials reveal a much more complex behavior than traditional engineering materials due to their advanced str- ture or composition. Furthermore, the classical applications of many engineering materials are extended to new ranges of applications and to more demanding en- ronmental conditions such as elevated temperatures. All these tendencies require in addition to the synthesis of new materials, proper methods for their m- ufacturing and extensive programs for their characterization. In many elds of application, the development of new methods and processes must be acc- plished by accurate and reliable modeling and simulation techniques. Only the interaction between these new developments with regards to manufacturing, m- eling, characterization, further processing and monitoring of materials will allow to meet all demands and to introduce these developments in safety-relevant applications. The 3rd International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting, ACE-X 2009, was held in Rome, Italy, from 22 to 23 June 2009 with a strong focus on the above mentioned developments.

Book Plasticity of Pressure Sensitive Materials

Download or read book Plasticity of Pressure Sensitive Materials written by Holm Altenbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical plasticity theory of metals is independent of the hydrostatic pressure. However if the metal contains voids or pores or if the structure is composed of cells, this classical assumption is no more valid and the influence of the hydrostatic pressure must be incorporated in the constitutive description. Looking at the microlevel, metal plasticity is connected with the uniform planes of atoms organized with long-range order. Planes may slip past each other along their close-packed directions. The result is a permanent change of shape within the crystal and plastic deformation. The presence of dislocations increases the likelihood of planes slipping. Nowadays, the theory of pressure sensitive plasticity is successfully applied to many other important classes of materials (polymers, concrete, bones etc.) even if the phenomena on the micro-level are different to classical plasticity of metals. The theoretical background of this phenomenological approach based on observations on the macro-level is described in detail in this monograph and applied to a wide range of different important materials in the last part of this book.

Book Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures written by Arun Shukla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures discusses the topic of dynamic loadings and their effect on material and structural failure. Since dynamic loading problems are very difficult as compared to their static counterpart, very little information is currently available about dynamic behavior of materials and structures. Topics covered include the response of both metallic as well as polymeric composite materials to blast loading and shock loadings, impact loadings and failure of novel materials under more controlled dynamic loads. These include response of soft materials that are important in practical use but have very limited information available on their dynamic response. Dynamic fragmentation, which has re-emerged in recent years has also been included. Both experimental as well as numerical aspects of material and structural response to dynamic loads are discussed. Written by several key experts in the field, Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures will appeal to graduate students and researchers studying dynamic loadings within mechanical and civil engineering, as well as in physics and materials science.

Book Impact of Sandwich Structures

Download or read book Impact of Sandwich Structures written by Jianxun Zhang and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the impact response of lightweight sandwich structures. As a kind of lightweight structure, sandwich structure has been widely used in various engineering fields, such as aerospace, ships, vehicles and so on, because of its high specific stiffness, high specific strength and versatility. During service, the sandwich structures may be subjected to various impact loads, which may result in serious damage, thereby reducing the stiffness, strength and load-bearing ca-pacity, thereby shortening the service life and bringing safety hazards. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of impact behavior and failure mechanisms is of great significance for the wider application of sandwich structures. In the past decades, many scholars have conducted in-depth research on related topics. But it is difficult for readers to systematically read all the literature in a short time. This book seeks to succinctly summarize the development and the results achieved in this field. This book focuses on simple, classical structures, such as beams, plates, and shells, under loads such as low-velocity impact, explosive load, and bullet penetrations. The main research methods are theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and experimental investigation. The purpose is to reveal the deep mechanism and lay a foundation for the application of sandwich structure in engineering practice.

Book Structural and Failure Mechanics of Sandwich Composites

Download or read book Structural and Failure Mechanics of Sandwich Composites written by L.A. Carlsson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Structural and Failure Mechanics of Sandwich Composites" by Leif A. Carlsson and George A. Kardomateas focuses on some important deformation and failure modes of sandwich panels such as global buckling, wrinkling and local instabilities, and face/core debonding. The book also provides the mechanics background necessary for understanding deformation and failure mechanisms in sandwich panels and the response of sandwich structural parts to a variety of loadings. Specifically, first-order and high-order sandwich panel theories, and three-dimensional elasticity solutions for the structural behavior outlined in some detail. Elasticity analysis can serve as a benchmark for judging the accuracy of simplified sandwich plate, shell and beam theories. Furthermore, the book reviews test methods developed for the characterization of the constituent face and core materials, and sandwich beams and plates. The characterization of face/core debonding is a major topic of this text, and analysis methods based on fracture mechanics are described and applied to several contemporary test specimens. Test methods and results documented in the literature are included and discussed. The book will benefit structural and materials engineers and researchers with the desire to learn more about structural behavior, failure mechanisms, fracture mechanics and damage tolerance of sandwich structures.
