Book Numerical Study of Natural Convection in Square Partitioned and Non partitioned Enclosures

Download or read book Numerical Study of Natural Convection in Square Partitioned and Non partitioned Enclosures written by Prasart Sukkaset and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer characteristics and associated temperature and flow fields for natural convection in two-dimensional, square, partitioned and non-partitioned enclosures have been determined for Grashof numbers ranging from 103 to 106. The vertical side walls of the enclosure are isothermal with all other surfaces assumed to be adiabatic. An adiabatic partition is oriented vertically with one edge on the enclosure floor. The dimensions and location of the partition were varied in order to investigate its effect of natural convection in the enclosure. Air was taken as the working fluid. Transport equations for vorticity and energy were solved using the QUICKEST scheme while the Poisson equation, for the steamfunction, was solved using the SOR method. For any Grashof number, temperature and flow fields in the region above the partition are not significantly different from those of the non-partitioned enclosure in the case of an aperture ratio of 0.75 or greater. An increase in the partition height or width results in modifying the temperature and flow fields and decreasing the average heat transfer across the enclosure.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book Numerical Solution of Natural Convection in an Inclined Rectangular Cavity with Partitions

Download or read book Numerical Solution of Natural Convection in an Inclined Rectangular Cavity with Partitions written by Thomas K. Toltzien and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical investigation was conducted on two-dimensional natural convection within inclined rectangular enclosures partitioned into 45 degree triangular cells. The time dependent governing equations, vorticity, energy, and stream function, were solved by an ADI method and a Gauss-Seidel SOR technique. The numerical procedure was validated for rectangular enclosures, then modified for triangular cells. Heat transfer coefficients were determined for an inclined square enclosure with a diagonal partition for Grashof numbers less than 200,000 and inclination angles between 10 degrees and 90 degrees. These results show a diagonal partition reduces the heat transferred by natural convection across an inclined square enclosure by more than 50%. (Author).

Book Three Dimensional Transient Natural Convection in a Horizontal Cylinder A Numerical Analysis

Download or read book Three Dimensional Transient Natural Convection in a Horizontal Cylinder A Numerical Analysis written by James A. Liburdy and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical formulation of the governing equations for transient natural convection in a finite length horizontal cylinder is developed and constructed in finite difference form. The boundary conditions consist of radial heat flux for a specified thermal resistance, axial heat flux from one closed end and three different conditions at the other end to represent exposure to a hot convecting gas environment. The formulation is expressed in terms of the vorticity equations, energy equation and a set of vector potential equations. Solution is by the alternating direction implicit method for the vorticity and energy equations and the successive over relaxation method for the vector potential equations. Numerical experiments were run using the model to determine the local wall heat flux and the local wall temperatures. A heat transfer correlation is presented in terms of the Nusselt and Rayleigh numbers. Steady state conditions are obtained for the nondimensional time approximately equal to .005. Circumferential heat transfer coefficient variations are shown with larger values occurring near the top of the cylinder. Axial coefficients vary within approximately 10 percent with the largest values occurring near the center of the cylinder. With respect to test conditions at the AEDC facility, the convective components appear to be less than 10 percent of the radiative heat flux to the cylinder walls when a high temperature gas (air) is enclosed in the cylinder.
