Book excerpt: When decorated Navy intelligence officer Lieutenant Katie Thomas is implicated in a daring theft of a top-secret military asset, the Nuke Case, it's not just her career that hangs in the balance but national security itself. Rendered catatonic and ensnared in an alien plot, Katie becomes a mysterious piece in a chilling game of cosmic intrigue. Major Randell Cole, a maverick within the Office of Naval Intelligence, stumbles upon an unsettling truth: Katie is a victim of extraterrestrial mind control, with ramifications that threaten the very fabric of human sovereignty. As the alien influence's extent becomes painfully evident, paranoia seeps into the corridors of ONI, alliances are tested, and the lines between ally and enemy blur. From the hypnosis chambers of Walter Reed to the global stage of clandestine warfare, "Nuke Case" is a gripping tale of espionage, extraterrestrial technology, and humanity’s resilience. Cole's pursuit of the truth leads to a covert battle against an unseen adversary, pitting advanced alien tech against the unyielding human spirit. Download or read book Tactical Nuclear Weapons written by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s tactical nuclear warfare was a topical issue. The introduction of the new generation of tactical nuclear weapons into Europe could have had disastrous consequences. These new weapons had already been developed by nuclear-weapon laboratories and pressures were growing for their deployment. On first sight, smaller and more accurate nuclear weapons may seem more humane and militarily preferable to the relatively high-yield tactical nuclear weapons currently deployed. But some of these new types of weapons would blur the distinction between nuclear and conventional weapons and their use would make escalation to strategic nuclear war extremely likely. Indeed, the argument for these new weapons is that their use in wartime is more credible (and therefore ‘acceptable’) than current types of tactical nuclear weapons. This perception could easily lead to the exceedingly dangerous idea that some types of tactical nuclear war were ‘winnable’. The fact has to be faced that any use of nuclear weapons is almost certain to escalate until all available weapons are used. To believe otherwise is to believe that one side will surrender before it has used all the weapons in its arsenal. History shows that this is most unlikely to happen. Because of its importance, SIPRI organized a meeting to discuss the whole question. Originally published in 1978, this book is the outcome of that meeting.

Book Nuclear Black Markets

Download or read book Nuclear Black Markets written by Mark Fitzpatrick (M.P.P.) and published by IISS. This book was released on 2007 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The arrest and public confession of Pakistani nuclear weapons scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan in 2004 revealed the existence of a global proliferation network which had, over almost two decades, provided nuclear technology, expertise, and designs to Iran, North Korea, Libya and possibly other countries. Khan was not the only nuclear arms merchant and Pakistan was not the only country implicated in his shadowy network. It spanned three continents and eluded both national and international systems of export controls that had been designed to prevent illicit trade. The discovery of the network highlighted concerns that nuclear technology is no longer the monopoly of industrially advanced countries, but can be purchased off-the-shelf by both states and terrorist groups. The IISS Strategic Dossier on nuclear black markets provides a comprehensive assessment of the Pakistani nuclear programme from which the Khan network emerged, the network's onward proliferation activities, and the illicit trade in fissile materials. In addition, the Strategic Dossier provides an overview of the clandestine nuclear procurement activities of other states, along with the efforts made both by Pakistan and the international community to prevent the reoccurrence of further proliferation networks and to secure nuclear technology. The final chapter assesses policy options for further action.

Book My Journey at the Nuclear Brink

Download or read book My Journey at the Nuclear Brink written by William Perry and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Perry has long been one of the more strenuous advocates for confronting the dangers of the nuclear age, and his engaging memoir explains why.” —Foreign Affairs My Journey at the Nuclear Brink is a continuation of former Secretary of Defense William J. Perry's efforts to keep the world safe from a nuclear catastrophe. It tells the story of his coming of age in the nuclear era, his role in trying to shape and contain it, and how his thinking has changed about the threat these weapons pose. In a remarkable career, Perry has dealt firsthand with the changing nuclear threat. Decades of experience and special access to top-secret knowledge of strategic nuclear options have given Perry a unique, and chilling, vantage point from which to conclude that nuclear weapons endanger our security rather than securing it. This book traces his thought process as he journeys from the Cuban Missile Crisis, to crafting a defense strategy in the Carter Administration to offset the Soviets’ numeric superiority in conventional forces, to presiding over the dismantling of more than 8,000 nuclear weapons in the Clinton Administration, and to his creation in 2007, with George Shultz, Sam Nunn, and Henry Kissinger, of the Nuclear Security Project to articulate their vision of a world free from nuclear weapons and to lay out the urgent steps needed to reduce nuclear dangers. “Perry’s authoritative memoir. . . . is a clear, sobering and, for many, surprising warning that the danger of a nuclear catastrophe today is actually greater than it was during that era of U.S.-Soviet competition…a significant and insightful memoir and a necessary read.” —Mortimer B. Zuckerman, U.S. News & World Report

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I speak candidly about radiation sickness in a poignant manner, because of not only the fact concerning myself succumbing to it, but I wanted to create a memorable impact as well as there exist people scattered about this world as these same people are suffering and dying from this copiously sad disease, or affliction, or mans' desires to alter the enviornment as he is now doing more harm than aiding it. ...But as this story that is heart touching as it is revealing, the young victim still maintained a sense of gentleness and patience in the direction of his unprovoked enemies, which were those at the very nuclear power plant, in his eyes, gave him life; a chance at hope for a brighter future in a rural place, but still candidly holding onto the past in which he has grown. Becomming completely ravaged from the terrible effects of the high level of nuclear radiation and from the industrial accident in which he fell prey, this toxic waste worker still manages to keep himself peacefully aware of not only the ultimate consequences of their mistake, or inexcusable blunder that should never be forgotten or done again.

  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book Japan written by Frank Baldwin and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 earthquake off Japan’s northeast coast triggered a tsunami that killed more than 20,000 people, displaced 600,000, and caused billions of dollars in damage as well as a nuclear meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Japan, the world’s third largest economy, was already grappling with recovery from both its own economic recession of the 1990s and the global recession following the US-driven financial crisis of 2008 when the disaster hit, changing its fortunes yet again. This small, populous Asian nation—once thought to be a contender for the role of the world’s number one power—now faces a world of uncertainty. Japan’s economy has shrunk, China has challenged its borders, and it faces perilous demographic adjustments from decreased fertility and an aging populace, with the country’s population expected to drop to less than 100 million by 2048. In Japan: The Precarious Future, a group of distinguished scholars of Japanese economics, politics, law, and society examine the various roads that might lie ahead. Will Japan face a continued erosion of global economic and political power, particularly as China’s outlook improves exponentially? Or will it find a way to protect its status as an important player in global affairs? Contributors explore issues such as national security, political leadership, manufacturing prowess, diplomacy, population decline, and gender equality in politics and the workforce, all in an effort to chart the possible futures for Japan. Both a roadmap for change and a look at how Japan arrived at its present situation, this collection of thought-provoking analyses will be essential for understanding the current landscape and future prospects of this world power.
