Book excerpt: Nucleotide Sequences 1986/1987, Volume I: Primates presents data that reflect the information found in GenBank Release 44.0 of August 1986. This book provides information pertinent to the unique international collaboration between two leading nucleotide sequence data libraries, one based in Europe and one in the United States. Organized into one section, this volume begins with an overview of the sequences, some basic identifying information, and some of the biological annotations. This text then discusses the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Data Library, an international center of fundamental research with its main focus in the fields of cell biology, molecular structures, instrumentation, and differentiation. This book discusses as well the GenBank database. This book is a valuable resource for molecular biologists and other investigators collecting the large number of reported DNA and RNA sequences and making them available in computer-readable form.

Book Molecular Biology and Evolution of Blood Group and MHC Antigens in Primates

Download or read book Molecular Biology and Evolution of Blood Group and MHC Antigens in Primates written by Antoine Blancher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zoologists have categorized primates into a single order, and no one doubts today that they share a common ancestry. Humans and Old and New World non human primate species, from the lemurs of Madagascar to the African anthro poid apes, represent diverging branches of an evolutionary common trunk. Along with species-specific characters, all primates have retained a number of ancestral traits, relics of their common origin. The comparative study of these species-specific and ancestral traits makes it possible to reconstruct the evolu tionary pathways of humans and nonhuman primates. The discovery of the human blood groups and, later, of the Major Histocom patibility Complex (MHC) had a seminal effect on the field of human genetics, providing the first sound examples of mendel ian polymorphisms. The use of blood group and MHC alleles as genetic markers in biological anthropology gen erated a conceptual revolution and persuaded researchers to begin to think in terms of populations and not only intems of typology. The counterparts of these human red and white cell antigens were found and studied in nunhuman primates, and progress in this field is summarized in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was estab lished in 1978 to stimulate and support scientific research and educational programs related to nutrition, toxicology, and food safety, and to encourage cooperation in these programs among scientists in universities, industry, and government agencies to assist in the resolution of health and safety issues. To supplement and enhance these efforts, ILSI has made a major commitment to supporting programs to harmonize toxicologic testing, to advance a more uniform interpreta tion of bioassay results worldwide, to promote a common understanding of lesion classifications, and to encourage wide discussion of these topics among scientists. The Mo nographs on the Pathology of Laboratory Animals are de signed to facilitate communication among those involved in the safety testing of foods, drugs, and chemicals. The complete set will cover all organ systems and is intended for use by pathologists, toxicologists, and others con cerned with evaluating toxicity and carcinogenicity stu dies. The international nature of the project - as reflected in the composition of the editorial board and the diversity of the authors and editors -strengthens our expectations that understanding and cooperation will be improved worldwide through the series. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface This book, on Nonhuman Primates, is the eleventh volume of a set pre pared under the sponsorship of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI).

Book Post Genome Biology of Primates

Download or read book Post Genome Biology of Primates written by Hirohisa Hirai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, first reports of the human draft genome were published. Since then, genomes of many other organisms have been sequenced, including several primate species: the chimpanzee, rhesus macaque, gorilla, orangutan, gibbon, baboon, marmoset, tarsier, galago, lemur, and more recently Neanderthals. In a new era of "post-genome biology", scientists now have the vast amount of information revealed by genome research to confront one of the most challenging, fundamental questions in primatology and anthropology: What makes us human? This volume comprises a collection of articles on a variety of topics relevant to primate genomes, including evolution, human origins, genome structure, chromosome genomics, and bioinformatics. The book covers the cutting-edge research in molecular primatology and provides great insights into the functional diversity of primates. This valuable collection will benefit researchers and students, including primatologists, anthropologists, molecular biologists, evolutionary biologists, and animal behaviorists.

Book A Primate Model for the Study of Colitis and Colonic Carcinoma The Cotton Top Tamarin Saguinus oedipus

Download or read book A Primate Model for the Study of Colitis and Colonic Carcinoma The Cotton Top Tamarin Saguinus oedipus written by Neal K. Clapp and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Primate Model for the Study of Colitis and Colonic Carcinoma describes recent observations of the prevalence, pathogenesis, natural history, and time-course of idiopathic colitis and colonic carcinoma in the Cotton-Top Tamarin (CTT) model. Results of colonoscopy and mucosal biopsy are shown to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of new anti-colitic agents. The contributions of antigenic profiles as a function of disease state, occurrence of extra-intestinal manifestations, and possible causal agents of colitis are also discussed. Prevalence of spontaneous CTT colonic carcinoma is considered from genetic influence, from promotion by colitis, and through the use of diagnostic and prognostic tools such as flow cytometry. Changes in fecal steroids, serum markers, colonic glycoprotein, polyamine metabolism, and immunobiology of CTTs are discussed in regard to disease condition. The book is an essential reference on the CTT model for gastroenterologists, oncologists, and all researchers interested in digestive diseases.
