This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dept. of Energy (DoE) manages over 100 construction projects with estimated costs over $90 billion and 97 nuclear waste cleanup projects with estimated costs over $230 billion. DoE has about 14,000 employees to oversee the work of more than 93,000 contractor employees. This testimony discusses: (1) recent work on contract and project mgmt. within two of DoE's largest program offices -- the Nat. Nuclear Security Admin. (NNSA) and the Office of Environmental Mgmt. (EM); (2) preliminary results of ongoing work on project mgmt. at NNSA's Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility project at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina; and (3) actions needed by NNSA and EM to improve contract and project mgmt. Book Characterization of Remote Handled Transuranic Waste for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

Download or read book Characterization of Remote Handled Transuranic Waste for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-09-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) disposes of plutonium-contaminated debris from its 27 nuclear weapons facilities at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), an underground repository in Carlsbad, New Mexico. After four years of operational experience, DOE has opportunities to make changes to the costly and time-consuming process of "characterizing" the waste to confirm that it is appropriate for shipment to and disposal at WIPP.  The report says that in order to make such changes, DOE should conduct and publish a systematic and quantitative assessment to show that the proposed changes would not affect the protection of workers, the public, or the environment.

This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear weapons activities at LANL have generated large quantities of TRU waste that must be disposed of properly. To address a 2005 cleanup agreement with the state of New Mexico requiring DOE to close LANL's TRU waste site, NNSA is to oversee two TRU waste projects. The first is to remove the waste stored at LANL and ship it to WIPP for permanent disposal. The second is to construct a facility-the TWF-to provide new capabilities for managing newly generated TRU waste at LANL. NNSA has developed cost estimates for both projects. GAO was asked to review cost estimates for the TRU waste projects at LANL. This report examines (1) the extent to which NNSA's TRU waste removal project at LANL has met its cost estimates and (2) the extent to which NNSA's cost estimate for the TWF met best practices for a reliable estimate. GAO reviewed spending data for the TRU waste removal project for fiscal years 2006 through 2014 and the cost estimates for both projects, compared the cost estimate for the TWF with best practices, and interviewed agency officials.

Book excerpt: In Oct. 1993 the Dept. of Energy announced that it was abandoning its strategy for underground tests with nuclear wastes in favor of laboratory-based tests. This report determines if the decision was scientifically sound, & if DOE's projected cost (a savings of $139 million) & time savings were realistic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disposal of radioactive waste from nuclear weapons production and power generation has caused public outcry and political consternation. Nuclear Wastes presents a critical review of some waste management and disposal alternatives to the current national policy of direct disposal of light water reactor spent fuel. The book offers clearcut conclusions for what the nation should do today and what solutions should be explored for tomorrow. The committee examines the currently used "once-through" fuel cycle versus different alternatives of separations and transmutation technology systems, by which hazardous radionuclides are converted to nuclides that are either stable or radioactive with short half-lives. The volume provides detailed findings and conclusions about the status and feasibility of plutonium extraction and more advanced separations technologies, as well as three principal transmutation concepts for commercial reactor spent fuel. The book discusses nuclear proliferation; the U.S. nuclear regulatory structure; issues of health, safety and transportation; the proposed sale of electrical energy as a means of paying for the transmutation system; and other key issues.
