Book Nuclear Techniques in Soil plant Studies for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Preservation

Download or read book Nuclear Techniques in Soil plant Studies for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Preservation written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium jointly organized by the IAEA and FAO, Vienna, 17-21 October 1994. The objective of the symposium was to assess the progress being made in the use of nuclear and related techniques for studying various aspects of soil fertility and plant nutrition, environmental problems, the potential and limitations of existing methods, and the possibilities for further development. Analytical methods and equipment are discussed, as are isotope dilution techniques, transfers of fixed N to non-fixing crops, crop water consumption, labelled fertilizer involving fertigation, 13C discrimination, erosion and soil degradation, and global warming and climate change. The proceedings should assist scientists, particularly those in developing countries, to find ways of increasing and sustaining soil fertility and crop production while preserving the environment.

Book Introduction to Nuclear Techniques in Agronomy and Plant Biology

Download or read book Introduction to Nuclear Techniques in Agronomy and Plant Biology written by Peter B. Vose and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Nuclear Techniques in Agronomy and Plant Biology is a 15-chapter book that begins with an explanation of the nature of isotopes and radiation, nuclear reactions, and radioisotopes. Subsequent chapters describe the radioassay, use of stable isotopes as tracers, and activation analysis for biological samples. Other chapters discuss X-ray fluorescence spectrography for plants and soils; autoradiography; isotopes in soils studies; isotopic tracers in field experimentation; and nuclear techniques in plant science and soil water. The last chapter centers on the radiation and other induced mutations in plant breeding.

Book Mutations In Vitro and Molecular Techniques for Environmentally Sustainable Crop Improvement

Download or read book Mutations In Vitro and Molecular Techniques for Environmentally Sustainable Crop Improvement written by M. Maluszynski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last thirty years, most increases in agricultural production were achieved through high input agrieulture in areas with fertile soils and sufficient water. Intensive methods of production with high levels of nitrogen fertilizer and pesticides were often accompanied by environmental degradation and in some instances by pollution of the food supply. However, rapid population growth has also led to increasing use of marginal lands, where adverse soil and climatic eonditions are serious constraints to food production. These areas are even more sensitive to ecological destabilization. Environmentally sound systems of food production and land use are essential for meeting the food security needs of developing countries. To do this, greater genetic variability is needed within the best crop genotypes available for the areas in need coupled with better management praetices and crop rotations. These requirements can only be realized if suitable crop varieties are bred. These should be varieties with a much shorter growing period, suitable for rotation, increased tolerance or resistance to diseases and pests as weil as to drought and salinity and other adverse soil and climatic conditions.

Book Guideline for Salinity Assessment Mitigation and Adaptation Using Nuclear and Related Techniques

Download or read book Guideline for Salinity Assessment Mitigation and Adaptation Using Nuclear and Related Techniques written by Mohammad Zaman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is an outcome of the collaboration between the Soil and Water Management & Crop Nutrition Section, Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, Austria, and Dr. Shabbir A Shahid, Senior Salinity Management Expert, Freelancer based in United Arab Emirates. The objective of this book is to develop protocols for salinity and sodicity assessment and develop mitigation and adaptation measures to use saline and sodic soils sustainably. The focus is on important issues related to salinity and sodicity and to describe these in an easy and user friendly way. The information has been compiled from the latest published literature and from the authors’ publications specific to the subject matter. The book consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the terms salinity and sodicity and describes various salinity classification systems commonly used around the world. Chapter 2 reviews global distribution of salinization and socioeconomic aspects related to salinity and crop production. Chapters 3 covers comprehensively salinity and sodicity adaptation and mitigation options including physical, chemical, hydrological and biological methods. Chapter 4 discusses the efforts that have been made to demonstrate the development of soil salinity zones under different irrigation systems. Chapter 5 discusses the quality of irrigation water, boron toxicity and relative tolerance to boron, the effects of chlorides on crops. Chapter 6 introduces the role of nuclear techniques in saline agriculture.
