Book Nuclear Techniques and in Vitro Culture for Plant Improvement

Download or read book Nuclear Techniques and in Vitro Culture for Plant Improvement written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 1986 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium organized by the IAEA and FAO, Vienna, 19-23 August 1985. The symposium examined the usefulness for plant breeding purposes of somaclonal variation, i.e. the occurrence of mutations during in vitro culture with or without the application of ionizing radiation or other mutagens. Another issue was finding ways and means of maintaining the genetic integrity of plants under in vitro conditions, such integrity being of vital importance if in vitro techniques are to be used to propagate virus-free clones of economically important plants, or to preserve germplasm in gene banks. In vitro culture techniques considerably accelerate the plant breeding cycle. This factor and the advantage of using haploids derived from another culture were also discussed at the symposium.

Book Role of Mutation Breeding In Floriculture Industry

Download or read book Role of Mutation Breeding In Floriculture Industry written by S.K Datta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a comprehensive review of many aspects of current interest and progress on mutation research on vegetatively propagated ornamentals. It covers almost all aspects of induced mutagenesis on ornamental plants. Chapters in this title provides information about mutation technology for the development of new ornamental varieties. Taking all aspects together, it is an excellent reference book of updated information on mutation breeding on vegetatively propagated ornamentals. Floriculture has become a very important industry in many countries as a result of science-based techniques and a steady supply of improved plant materials. The induced mutation is now recognized as well as a standardized valuable tool for the development of new varieties. The book provides an authoritative review account of all important aspects related to inducing mutagenesis in the field of ornamental crops. The primary objective of the book is to give a coherent and concise account of earlier work with an emphasis on recent developments. The knowledge generated so far has been reviewed in this book which can work as a knowledge base to prepare guidelines for future planning of successful application of mutation technology for the floriculture industry. The information in the book is an excellent informative document for researchers, teachers, students, and breeders for understanding the application of induced mutations and planning future strategies for the development of new ornamental varieties for the floriculture industry.

Book Biology and Breeding of Food Legumes

Download or read book Biology and Breeding of Food Legumes written by Aditya Pratap and published by CABI. This book was released on 2011 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food legumes are important constituents of the human diet and animal feed where they are crucial to a balanced diet, supplying high quality proteins. These crops also play an important role in low-input agricultural production systems by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Despite systematic and continuous breeding efforts through conventional methods, substantial genetic gains have not been achieved. With the rise in demand for food legumes/pulses and increased market value of these crops, research has focused on increasing production and improving the quality of pulses for both edible and industrial purposes. "Biology and Breeding of Food Legumes" covers the history, origin and evolution, botany, breeding objectives and procedures, nutritional improvement, industrial uses and post-harvest technology and also recent developments made through biotechnological intervention.
