Book Nuclear Structure of Radioactive Neutron Rich Nuclei with 4pi Detector Arrays

Download or read book Nuclear Structure of Radioactive Neutron Rich Nuclei with 4pi Detector Arrays written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-beam studies of [gamma]-ray spectroscopy of radioactive neutron-rich nuclei using the 4[pi] TIGRESS array at TRIUMF requires a ''tag'' to improve the selectivity of the detected [gamma] rays in the high [gamma]-ray background produced by radioactive beams and the need for Doppler-shift correction. We propose development of two types of large solid angle auxiliary charged particle detectors to be used in conjunction with TRIGRESS in order to provide the required tag. The initial phase of detector development will focus on research involving light-mass radioactive beams with Z [le] 20. Gas avalanche detectors, such as CHICO, are not the ideal detector for lighter ions. Therefore, a new detector system, called Bambino, is being developed that is based on commercially available CD type position-sensitive silicon detectors. Three CD-S2 detectors, with a thickness of 140 [micro]m, have been ordered from Micron Semiconductor Ltd. A split spherical target chamber will be built in Rochester to accommodate two of those CD detectors in both forward and backward directions. These detectors will be placed 3 cm from the target, providing an angular coverage from 20.1[sup o] to 49.4[sup o] for the forward hemisphere and from 130.6[sup o] to 159.9[sup o] for the backward hemisphere. The detectors will us ten 8-channels preamplifiers, from Swan Research, that will be mechanically mounted on both the entrance and exit beam pipes. The work on both the internal and external cables connecting the detectors to the preamplifiers, vacuum feedthrough etc. is in progress. In addition, a vacuum chamber has been ordered from Kurt J. Lesker Company for testing these detectors. Bambino should be ready by the spring 2006. The second phase will involve the development of a next generation CHICO-like gas avalanche detector for experiments involving heavier radioactive beams. CHICO, a highly segmented parallel-plate avalanche counter, has proven to be very successful when used in conjunction with Gammasphere [1-2]. It has an angular coverage of 2.8[pi] sr and an angular resolution of 1[sup o] in [theta] and 4.6[sup o] in [phi] in addition to a time resolution of 500 ps. The proposed new avalanche detector will have an improved position resolution that matches the (2 mm) achieved by TIGRESS. This longer-term detector development project is predicated on future funding and we actively seek collaborators. Such a detector system, used in conjunction with a thin target, allows the detection of both scattered and recoiling nuclei in kinematic coincidence providing a unique tag for the detected [gamma] rays and at the same time providing sufficient information for the proper Doppler-shift corrections. This detector system can accommodate many types of experiments involving (quasi) two-body kinematics, such as Coulomb excitation [2-7], few-nucleon transfer reactions [8-10], deep-inelastic reactions [11-16], and spontaneous fissions [1] or fusion-fission reactions [17-20] we have carried out in the past. The initial phase of proposed experiments will be to study, by Coulomb excitation, the issue of the ''island of inversion'' for the Mg isotopes in the N [approx] 20 region. The B(E2) values for the first 2[sup +] states of [sup 30,32,34]Mg have been measured using intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation at projectile fragmentation facilities. The B(E2) value for [sup 30]Mg also was measured recently via conventional Coulomb excitation at the CERN REX-ISOLDE facility. The spread in measured B(E2)'s of up to a factor of two is insufficient to distinguish among various shell model predictions. Obviously, more precise measurements are necessary to ascertain how well the shell model can predict the properties of neutron-rich nuclei. An accuracy about 5% for the measured B(E2) can be achieved assuming a three-day beam time with an intensity about 3 x 10[sup 4] p/s of [sup 32]Mg on a 3 mg/cm[sup 2] [sup 208]Pb target at E[sub lab] = 115 MeV. A measure of the shape or the static quadrupole moment of this nucleus, in addition to the B(E2) value, would be possible if the beam intensity were above 10[sup 6] p/s. When heavier radioactive beams become available at the ISAC-II facility, it will open new research opportunities for exploring the nuclear structure of neutron rich nuclei, including the evolution with isospin of two-phonon vibrations, prolate-to-oblate shape transitions, octupole deformation and neutron pairing.

Book Investigations of Nuclear Structure

Download or read book Investigations of Nuclear Structure written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposal addresses studies of nuclear structure at low-energies and development of instrumentation for that purpose. The structure studies deal with features of neutron-rich nuclei with unexplored shapes (football- or pear-shaped nuclei). The regions of interest are: neutron rich nuclei like 132-138Sn, or 48-54Ca, and the Zr, Mo, and Ru isotopes. The tools used can be grouped as follows: either Gammasphere or Gretina multi-gamma detector arrays and auxiliary detectors (Microball, Neutron Shell, and the newly completed Phoswich Wall). The neutron-rich nuclei are accessed by radioactive-beam binary reactions or by 252Cf spontaneous fission. The experiments with heavy radioactive beams aim at exciting the beam nuclei by pick-up or transfer a neutron or a proton from a light target like 13C, 9Be, 11B or 14N .For these binary-reaction studies the Phoswich Wall detector system is essential. It is based on four multi-anode photomultiplier tubes on which CsI and thin fast-timing plastic scintillators are attached. Their signals are digitized with a high density microchip system.

Book Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons

Download or read book Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons written by J. Ero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on "Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons" or ganized in Budapest between 31st July and 5th August. 1972. was the successor of a meeting held seven years ago in Antwerp. The close links between the two conferences were revealed not in name alone but. more importantly. in the choice of subjects discussed. As in Antwerp. the lectures and contributions to the Budapest Conference could be grouped under the following five main headings: nuclear spectroscopy; the optical model; the statistical model and intermediate structures; the mechanism of neutron capture and non-statistical effects; and, finally. miscellaneous special topics. The invited papers on the one hand summarizing recent developments and current thinking in one of the above main topics. and the other surveying the most important results of the contributed papers submitted to the Conference. were presented on the plenary sessions. Most of the contributed papers were read in full on three parallel sessions. This volume contains the complete text of all the lectures delivered in the plenary sessions and abstracts of the contributed papers. The invited talks were presented at the Conference in a rather random order because of technical reasons, it seemed. however, more sensible to change their order according to their subjects and to print them grouped under the above main headings. Further more we divided the Proceedings into two main parts, the first containing only the lectures of summarizing character. the second including the abstracts of the contributions together with the surveying talks.

Book Shell Structure and Evolution of Collectivity in Nuclei

Download or read book Shell Structure and Evolution of Collectivity in Nuclei written by Ritesh Kshetri and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have studied two regions of doubly closed shell nuclei over the nuclear chart: stable nuclei with N Z around 40Ca and highly neutron-rich ones close to drip-line above the 132Sn shell closure. Both experimental and theoretical works have been performed for each of these mass regions. The experimental part includes three works: (i) high energy characterization of the Compton suppressed Clover detector, (ii) In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic studies of high spin states of 35Cl in mass 40 region and (iii) X- and gamma- ray spectroscopic studies of fission fragments of 252Cf spontaneous fission source in mass 132Sn region. The theoretical study supplemented the experimental findings using the microscopic Shell model and the phenomenological Particle Rotor model. Our work emphasizes that the issues thought to be relevant for nuclei away from stability, should also be studied over a broader region of nuclear territory. With the latest developments in the experimental facilities, the nuclei near the stability line should be re-investigated for finding possible correlations with those away from stability.

Book Frontiers in Nuclear Structure

Download or read book Frontiers in Nuclear Structure written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this brief review was to discuss various facts of nuclear structure physics. The list of topics covered is by no means complete due to time and space constraints. In years to come, they shall see substantial progress in their understanding of molecular structure--a rich and interdisciplinary field. An important element in this task is to extend the study of nuclei into new domains. New radioactive beam facilities, together with advanced multi-detector arrays and mass/change separators, is essential in probing nuclei in new domains where new phenomena, likely to be different from anything they have observed to date, will occur. The new data are expected to bring qualitatively new information about the fundamental properties of the nucleonic many-body system and will be crucial for developing a unified description of the nucleus.
