Book Nuclear Localization of Growth Factors and of Monoclonal Antibodies

Download or read book Nuclear Localization of Growth Factors and of Monoclonal Antibodies written by Ewa Rakowicz-Szulczynska and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-10-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Localization of Growth Factors and of Monoclonal Antibodies focuses on how an additional class of chromatin receptors is directly involved in mediation of the action of growth factors on the gene regulation level. The book describes a new intracellular pathway of growth factors and presents methods for identifying nuclear antigens with an epitopic homology of the cell surface antigens. It teaches how to distinguish monoclonal antibodies that penetrate the cell and localize in the nucleus from those that act only on the cell surface. New light is shed on the mechanisms of malignant transformation, and new approaches to developing anti-cancer and anti-HIV drugs are covered. The book will be important for oncologists, biochemists, cell biologists, pharmaceutical researchers, investigative pathologists, neurochemists, and immunologists.

Book Signaling Pathways in Squamous Cancer

Download or read book Signaling Pathways in Squamous Cancer written by Adam B. Glick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Squamous epithelia form the lining surface of tissues in contact with the environment: the skin, oral mucosa, esophagus and respiratory tract, the genital tract, and several other specialized tissues. These tissues are at highest risk for exposure to environmental carcinogens such as UV, tobacco smoke and infectious agents. Cancers that form in squamous epithelia are among the most common human solid tumors and have high morbidity and mortality. These cancers include squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, oral cancer, head and neck and esophageal cancer, certain lung cancers and cervical cancer. We propose to organize the book so that the early chapters will focus on individual pathways and more specific mechanisms in both normal function and cancer, while the later chapters will be more integrative and include overviews of biomarkers and therapeutic development. This should increase interest for clinically oriented researchers. All authors will be encouraged to provide a balanced review in addition to highlighting their own work.

Book Current Perspectives on Insulin like Growth Factor Binding Protein IGFBP Research

Download or read book Current Perspectives on Insulin like Growth Factor Binding Protein IGFBP Research written by Andreas Hoeflich and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family of IGFBPs has been developed by the duplication of genes and genomes and contributes to genetic and functional diversity. Due to the different protein domains present in the molecule, IGFBPs can be seen as mediators of tissue-specific IGF-functions. However, IGFBPs also have IGF-independent functions both inside and outside the cell. These diverse genetic, molecular and functional aspects of IGFBPs are discussed within this Research Topic. Accumulating data provide evidence for the regulation of IGFBP-functions by proteases, which may acutely regulate bioactivity of the IGFs. However, during proteolytic degradation IGFBP-fragments with novel functions can also be formed and are located both intra- and extracellularly. Distinct IGFBP-fragments can even be found in the perinuclear compartment or within the nucleus, where they can impact on gene expression. Several contributions presented in the current Research Topic particularly stress the relevance of structural aspects in IGFBP research. The current lack of comprehensive structural information is dramatically limiting the biomarker potential of particular IGFBPs. Finally, the Research Topic also provides novel functions of the IGFBP family from model organisms, farm animals and humans. Thereby, the biomarker potential not only relates to normal and malignant growth but also to metabolism and animal welfare. One important aim of the Research Topic is to encourage next generation IGFBP research reflecting subject-individual, conditional, and hormonal parameters but also structural aspects of the IGFBPs.

Book Treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcomas

Download or read book Treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcomas written by H.M. Pinedo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major advances of the last decade concerning the treatment of patients with soft tissue sarcomas is that an increased number of patients are being discussed in multidisciplinary teams prior to the initial treatment. The present volume on soft tissue sarcomas in the series Cancer Treatment and Research reflects the multidisciplinary approach with a focus on recent developments. The availability of new histopathologic techniques has reduced the number of unclassified sarcomas and has furhter increased the importance of the histo pathologist in providing estimates of the prognosis of the patient as well as data for the planning of treatment strategy. Further data for this strategy will be provided by diagnostic imaging. In this field, the role of magnetic reson ance imaging has been further defined. Of utmost importance is the recent trend toward consensus in staging. The modification of the staging system of the American Joint Commission for Cancer Staging and End Results Report ing brings the possibility of a single staging system within reach in the next decade. As surgery still provides the only chance for cure, the importance of being the most sparing as possible is obvious. For this reason, radiotherapy has been applied with success. The introduction of relatively new radiation tech niques is therefore being observed with interest.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-08-15
  • ISBN : 1603275533
  • Pages : 1294 pages

Download or read book CNS Cancer written by Erwin G. Van Meir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-15 with total page 1294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancers of the central nervous system are among the most lethal of human neoplasms. They are recalcitrant to even intensive multimodality therapies that include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Moreover, especially in children, the consequences of these therapies can itself be devastating and involve serious cognitive and developmental disorders. It is small wonder that such cancers have come under the intense scrutiny of each of the subspecialties of clinical care and investigation as well as attracting some of the best basic research scientists. Their joint efforts are gradually peeling away the mysteries surrounding the genesis and progression of these tumors and inroads are being steadily made into understanding why they resist therapies. This makes it an especially opportune time to assemble some of the best investigators in the field to review the ‘‘state of the art’’ in the various arenas that comprise the assault on CNS tumors. The breadth of this effort by the clinical and basic neuro-oncology community is quite simply amazing. To a large extent, it evolves from the knowledge of the human genome and its regulation that has been hard won over the past two decades.
