This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in 1978 that the former FIP (Fédération Internationale de la Précontrainte) published a state-of-art report on Containments for Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). In 1996 the then FIP Commission 7 Concrete pressure vessels and containments discussed the necessity to up-date this document. After the merger of FIP with CEB (Comité Euro-International du Béton) into fib (fédération internationale du béton - international federation for structural concrete) had taken place in 1998, these activities were continued by a new fib Task-Group 1.3 Containment structures of fib Commission 1 Structures. The decision to update the 1978 report was kept with the intention to give a broad and well illustrated review of existing NPP containments as the most characteristic and complex building of nuclear power plants. Following the description of containments for different reactor systems the state-of-art report includes considerations on safety as the basic purpose of the containment, which underlies all design and construction aspects and necessitates a strict monitoring and inspection program during the whole life of the structure. Regulatory requirements and their evolution as well as recent developments, conceptual and technological, are presented. The report is complemented by two annexes on CD ROM giving some general information (on 160 NPPs built since 19972) and some more detailed data on six typical recent NPP containments. This work has been achieved during the years 1999 and 2000 thanks to the participation of members of fib Commission 1 and particularly of its Task Group 1.3, involving also further invited experts in the nuclear field from many countries all over the world. Comes with 1 CD

Book Containment Culture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan Nadel
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN : 9780822316992
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Containment Culture written by Alan Nadel and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Nadel provides a unique analysis of the rise of American postmodernism by viewing it as a breakdown in Cold War cultural narratives of containment. These narratives, which embodied an American postwar foreign policy charged with checking the spread of Communism, also operated, Nadel argues, within a wide spectrum of cultural life in the United States to contain atomic secrets, sexual license, gender roles, nuclear energy, and artistic expression. Because these narratives were deployed in films, books, and magazines at a time when American culture was for the first time able to dominate global entertainment and capitalize on global production, containment became one of the most widely disseminated and highly privileged national narratives in history. Examining a broad sweep of American culture, from the work of George Kennan to Playboy Magazine, from the movies of Doris Day and Walt Disney to those of Cecil B. DeMille and Alfred Hitchcock, from James Bond to Holden Caulfield, Nadel discloses the remarkable pervasiveness of the containment narrative. Drawing subtly on insights provided by contemporary theorists, including Baudrillard, Foucault, Jameson, Sedgwick, Certeau, and Hayden White, he situates the rhetoric of the Cold War within a gendered narrative powered by the unspoken potency of the atom. He then traces the breakdown of this discourse of containment through such events as the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley, and ties its collapse to the onset of American postmodernism, typified by works such as Catch–22 and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. An important work of cultural criticism, Containment Culture links atomic power with postmodernism and postwar politics, and shows how a multifarious national policy can become part of a nation’s cultural agenda and a source of meaning for its citizenry.

Book Insights Into the Behavior of Nuclear Power Plant Containments During Severe Accidents

Download or read book Insights Into the Behavior of Nuclear Power Plant Containments During Severe Accidents written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The containment building surrounding a nuclear reactor offers the last barrier to the release of radioactive materials from a severe accident into the environment. The loading environment of the containment under severe accident conditions may include much greater than design pressures and temperatures. Investigations into the performance of containments subject to ultimate or failure pressure and temperature conditions have been performed over the last several years through a program administered by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). These NRC sponsored investigations are subsequently discussed. Reviewed are the results of large scale experiments on reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, and steel containment models pressurized to failure. In conjunction with these major tests, the results of separate effect testing on many of the critical containment components; that is, aged and unaged seals, a personnel air lock and electrical penetration assemblies subjected to elevated temperature and pressure have been performed. An objective of the NRC program is to gain an understanding of the behavior of typical existing and planned containment designs subject to postulated severe accident conditions. This understanding has led to the development of experimentally verified analytical tools that can be applied to accurately predict their ultimate capacities useful in developing severe accident mitigation schemes. Finally, speculation on the response of containments subjected to severe accident conditions is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing sufficient energy resources to replace coal, oil and gas is a globally critical necessity. Alternatives to fossil fuels such as wind, solar, or geothermal energies are desirable, but the usable quantities are limited and each has inherent deterrents. The only virtually unlimited energy source is nuclear energy, where safety of infrastructure systems is the paramount concern. Infrastructure Systems for Nuclear Energy addresses the analysis and design of infrastructures associated with nuclear energy. It provides an overview of the current and future nuclear power industry and the infrastructure systems from the perspectives of regulators, operators, practicing engineers and research academics. This book also provides details on investigations of containment structures, nuclear waste storage facilities and the applications of commercial/academic computer software. Specific environments that challenge the behavior of nuclear power plants infrastructure systems such as earthquake, blast, high temperature, irradiation effects, soil-structure interaction effect, etc., are also discussed. Key features: Includes contributions from global experts representing academia and industry Provides an overview of the nuclear power industry and nuclear infrastructure systems Presents the state-of-the-art as well as the future direction for nuclear civil infrastructure systems Infrastructure Systems for Nuclear Energy is a comprehensive, up-to-date reference for researchers and practitioners working in this field and for graduate studies in civil and mechanical engineering.
