Book Martin of Tours

Download or read book Martin of Tours written by Régine Pernoud and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regine Pernoud, the highly acclaimed French medieval historian, and author of best-selling titles on Joan of Arc and Hildegard of Bingen, as well as the book Those Terrible Middle Ages, presents an enlighteneing biography of one of France's most revered saints, and man whose impact on France, and Europe, continues to this days. Martin of Tours lived in the 4th century, at that great turning point in history when the Roman Empire fell and the Church took charge in the West. He left a successful career in the military life to become a monk, and later a Bishop who traveled extensively, evangelizing the countryside and creatiung that particular sort of community life in a village that is now called a "parish." More than four hundred towns and some four thousand parished in France are named after St. Martin. The term "chapel" is derived from the actual church where pilgrims venerate Martin's "cape" or cloak. Martin of Tours was a servant of the common man, as well as the nobility, and a very humble man who responded to the needs of his times and and opened up vast perspectives for ordinary, everyday life. Given the crisis of the Christian Faith now facing France and all of Europe, the story of this solider and great apostle and Christian evangelist is a timely one indeed.

I had determined, my like-minded brother, to keep private, and confine within the walls of my own house, the little treatise which I had written concerning the life of St. Martin. I did so, as I am not gifted with much talent, and shrank from the criticisms of the world, lest (as I think will be the case) my somewhat unpolished style should displease my readers, and I should be deemed highly worthy of general reprehension for having too boldly laid hold of a subject which ought to have been reserved for truly eloquent writers. But I have not been able to refuse your request again and again presented. For what could there be which I would not grant in deference to your love, even at the expense of my own modesty? Book My Path to Peace and Justice

Download or read book My Path to Peace and Justice written by Richard T. McSorley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard T. McSorley, S. J. (1914 - 2002) led an extraordinary life. He survived a World War II prison camp to become one of the great peacemakers of the twentieth century. From struggles against segregation in the late forties to Vietnam War protests in the sixties to condemnation of nuclear weapons in the eighties, McSorley has been on the cutting edge of the great social justice movements of the last half-century. His life crossed paths with many of the world's most notable figures: Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Daniel and Philip Berrigan; the Kennedy family; Bill Clinton; Don Helder Camara; and a host of peace leaders from throughout the world. In this autobiography published six years before his death, McSorley documents his life, his travels throughout Europe, South American, Central America and the Middle East. His descriptions of these events form a backdrop of the real story - his spiritual journey toward active peacemaking and unswerving pacifism. Through it all he weaves the thread of the theology of peace. He applies gospel principles to our social and government structures. McSorley may be best known for his ability to cut through academic arguments to state the truth in the most basic of terms. He counters the justification of war with the biblical call to love enemies. This book is an account of a life devoted to God and of service to the community.
