Book excerpt: Several authorship attribution studies have speculated about the existence of a link between topic cues and author style features. This research presents a novel experimental protocol for measuring the impact of topic features on author attribution predictive models. We call our technique "novel topic crossvalidation," which consists of holding out a single topic in a test set and iterating over choices of held-out topic to compute an average performance score. Using the New York Times Annotated corpus, we perform a subset procedure to build a sub-corpus of 18,862 documents, 15 authors, and 23 topics. With this sub-corpus, we perform a novel topic cross-validation. Our experiments differ from previous attempts to model topic/author influence in scope; previous methods were limited to three or fewer topics or authors. Having a larger set of topics and authors should provide researchers with a greater opportunity to explore the variability of style cues represented in sets of authors, as well as the confounding influence of topic. For this reason, we supply document/author/topic identifications so that researchers can build upon our work in a reproducible fashion.

Book excerpt: The practice of using statistical models in predicting authorship (so-called author-attribution models) is long established. Several recent authorship attribution studies have indicated that topic-specific cues impact author-attribution machine learning models. The arrival of new topics should be anticipated rather than ignored in an author attribution evaluation methodology; a model that relies heavily on topic cues will be problematic in deployment settings where novel topics are common. In order to effectively deal with novel topics, we create author and topic vectors and attempt to project out the topic influences from each document. Although our experiments did not validate our assumptions, they do point out a possible problem with a common assumption in authorship attribution research.

Computer technologies have not only made life easier and more accessible for users, but they have also opened up a new arena for illegal activities. These illegal actions have found an opportunity to spread via e-mails, websites, Internet chat rooms, forum pages, and social networking websites (like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Online contributors do not need to provide information such as their real names, the city where they live, age or gender in order to share their opinions, and such feelings of anonymity encourage criminal activities. Thus, disputed authorship cases have become one of the main challenges of the technological era. This research is a corpus-based simulated authorship casework application in Turkish. Texts for the corpora were collected from a collaborative online encyclopaedia – Eksi Sozluk (Sour Times) and Twitter. The corpus consists of 900 texts from 52 authors in total. However, 105 texts belong to seven authors from Twitter. The two methodological approaches that were applied are qualitative and statistical methods, according to Grant’s (2013) approach. Ten different tests were applied, depending on the various parameters that are forensically possible in real-world cases. Accordingly, the role of feature type, size, including the candidate author size, text size and a limited number of texts per author and finally cross-genre application were tested. The analyses revealed that such a combined approach has promising results in some tests in that they attributed authorship in Turkish. The findings of the research indicated that there is the potential to attribute unknown authors in Turkish and it appears that the results have significant conclusions for the broader application of forensic authorship attribution techniques in Turkish texts. Book excerpt: We determined that it is possible to achieve authorship attribution in the e-mail domain when training on "ersonal" e-mails and testing on "work" e-mails and vice versa. These results are unique since they simulate two different e-mail addresses belonging to the same person where the topic of the e-mails from the two different addresses do not intersect. As we only used one classification technique, these results are preliminary and may serve as a baseline for future work in this area. The corpus of data was the entirety of the Enron corpus as well as a subsection of hand-annotated work and personal e-mails. We discovered that there is enough author signal in each class to identify an author in a sea of noise. We included suggestions for future work in the areas of expanding feature selection, increasing corpus size, and including more classification methods. Advancement in this area will contribute to increasing cyber security by identifying the senders of anonymous derogatory e-mails and reducing cyber bullying.
