Book excerpt: A pioneering work, full of detail and depth of knowledge about Africa ... a must read! Two powerful forces converged to shift global development in the last three decades from the West to the East and Asia. These same forces now make Africa the "construction site of the century." Africa in the decade 2040- 2050 will have a population of 2.5 billion people. Together with China and India, Africa will surely affect our planet's future! "Africans are and will continue to be the beneficiaries of two dramatic global transformations: first, the shift of wealth from the West to the East and the South; second, the impact of the universalization of the digital age. The OECD stated that the first transformation is " ... the most important shift in the history of humanity;"the second marks the emergence of new forms of human civilization ... This book documents these transformations now taking hold in Africa, however incomplete , unequal and difficult. But these changes are robust and decisive. In Africa, like everywhere else in the world, strategies and actions must be put into place to seize the moment which is so unique in global history." - Jean-Louis Roy, from the IntroductionJean-Louis Roy is a prolific author and renowned diplomat, public figure, journalist, professor with a life-long interest and commitment to Africa. Book Conspicuous Consumption in Africa

Download or read book Conspicuous Consumption in Africa written by Ilana van Wyk and published by Wits University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays examining cultures of consumption on the African continent From early department stores in Cape Town to gendered histories of sartorial success in urban Togo, contestations over expense accounts at an apartheid state enterprise, elite wealth and political corruption in Angola and Zambia, the role of popular religion in the political intransigence of Jacob Zuma, funerals of big men in Cameroon, youth cultures of consumption in Niger and South Africa, queer consumption in Cape Town, middle-class food consumption in Durban and the consumption of luxury handcrafted beads, this collection of essays explores the ways in which conspicuous consumption is foregrounded in various African contexts and historical moments. The essays in Conspicuous Consumption in Africa put Thorstein Veblen’s concept under robust critical scrutiny, delving into the pleasures, stresses and challenges of consuming in its religious, generational, gendered and racialised aspects, revealing conspicuous consumption as a layered set of practices, textures and relations. This volume shows how central and revealing conspicuous consumption can be to fathoming the history of Africa’s projects of modernity, and their global lineages and legacies. In its grounded, up-close case studies, it is likely to feed into current public debates on the nature and future of African societies – South African society in particular.

Book Oases and Globalization

Download or read book Oases and Globalization written by Emilie Lavie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference work about the study of oases in the context of globalization. It is based on selected papers presented at the international colloquium entitled Oases in the Globalization, Ruptures and Continuities in Paris (December 16-17th, 2013). The main issue was to understand how oases have been excluded from or included into the process of globalization. In this context, the present book proposes firstly a discussion about the definition(s) of oasis and secondly several case studies analysing socio-spatial mutations in the oasis structure. The third part deals with the compelling globalization at different spatial scales, using two entries: the water management and local impacts of external control.

Book Cities of Entanglements

Download or read book Cities of Entanglements written by Barbara Heer and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do people live together in cities shaped by inequality? This comparative ethnography of two African cities, Maputo and Johannesburg, presents a new narrative about social life in cities often described as sharply divided. Based on the ethnography of entangled lives unfolding in a township and in a suburb in Johannesburg, in a bairro and in an elite neighborhood in Maputo, the book includes case studies of relations between domestic workers and their employers, failed attempts by urban elites to close off their neighborhoods, and entanglements emerging in religious spaces and in shopping malls. Systematizing comparison as an experience-based method, the book makes an important contribution to urban anthropology, comparative urbanism and urban studies.

It contains papers from more general points of views such as the democratization of access to digital information to more specific questions such as virtual libraries and new services, not forgetting user and librarian education, web site design, more specialized information, etc. The readers of these proceedings will find along these pages a very stimulating content which will guide them towards better services for virtual clients. Papers are presented in the original language of their presentation (Portuguese, French, Spanish and English) with summaries in these four languages.

Book The Contemporary Francophone African Intellectual

Download or read book The Contemporary Francophone African Intellectual written by Natalie Edwards and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Contemporary Francophone African Intellectual examines the issues with which the contemporary African intellectual engages, the fields s/he occupies, her/his residence and perspective, and her/his relations with the State and the people. In an increasingly economically deprived Africa, in which some states are ruled by dictators, what chances do people have of becoming intellectuals, using their critical faculties to challenge hegemony, enacting the transformative power of ideas in a public forum? Do intellectuals who remain in Africa run the risk of being swallowed into a vortex of hagiography? What is the responsibility of the intellectual in the face of an event such as the Rwandan genocide? What influence does religion have upon the contemporary intellectual’s work? Is migration one of the only paths available for African intellectuals, a number of whom have been critiquing their continent from within Europe? This volume focuses on the intellectual’s engagement across literature, philosophy, journalism and cultural criticism. It contains studies of established writers and philosophers as well as new voices. An African writer and public intellectual describes her own experience in and out of Africa in one chapter; a Philosophy Professor discusses his intellectual trajectory in another. Overall, this timely volume, which includes analysis of the work of intellectuals from North, East, West and Central Africa, problematizes our current understandings of the intellectual legacy of Africa and opens up new avenues into this understudied area.

Download or read book Le d veloppement des comp tences en Afrique subsaharienne un exercice d quilibre written by Omar Arias and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
