Book excerpt: The first volume of this new series is authored by the leading authority of these beautiful moths. The book is the first comprehensive work on Palaearctic Notodontidae since the famous Seitz work nearly a century ago. It covers in detail each of the approximately 520 species known from the Palaearctic Region. In the systematic part of the volume, each species is dealt with in the following format: scientific name with synonyms, diagnosis, dionomics, and distribution. There is a distribution map for each species on which non-palaearctic distribution is also shown. The book includes genitalia photos of the male and female of each species. On the high quality color plates, specimens are illustrated, covering the individual variety of the species, as well as the variation between female and male.

Book The Eupithecia of China

Download or read book The Eupithecia of China written by Vladimir Mironov and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eupithecia of China by Vladimir Mironov and Anthony Galsworthy offers a complete revision of the approximately 300 species occurring in China of this difficult genus of moths in the family Geometridae of the Lepidoptera. This fills a huge knowledge gap and clears up much taxonomic confusion resulting from limited earlier studies. All species are illustrated with colour photographs and the genitalia of both sexes, where known, are illustrated in excellent line drawings. The text gives full descriptions of all species, known distributions, hints on identification and, importantly, lists all known specimens in museum and private collections examined by the authors, thus providing a solid basis both for future researchers and collectors.

Book The Evolutionary History of Nematodes

Download or read book The Evolutionary History of Nematodes written by George O. Poinar Jr. and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-03-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nematodes are one of the most abundant groups of invertebrates on the face of the earth. Their numbers are estimated to range from 1000 per cm2 in the sand-covered hydrogen sulphide ‘black zone’ beneath the ocean floors to 1.2 billion in a single hectare of soil. Estimates for their species diversity range from 100 000 to 10 million. The past history of nematodes is a mystery, since very few fossils have been discovered. This book establishes a solid base in palaeonematology with descriptions of 66 new fossil species and accounts of all previous fossil and subfossil nematodes from sedimentary deposits, coprolites, amber and mummies. It shows how nematode fossils can be used to establish lineages at various locations and time periods in the earth’s history and when nematodes entered into symbiotic and parasitic associations with plants and animals.

Black and white photographs of the male genitalia of most species (excluding parts of Naryciinae and Taleporiinae due to their similarity) are given for the first time. Book The Nemonychidae Anthribidae and Attelabidae Coleoptera of Northern Europe

Download or read book The Nemonychidae Anthribidae and Attelabidae Coleoptera of Northern Europe written by Hans Gonget and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the species of the families Nemonychidae, Anthribidae and Attelabidae (Curculionoidea, Coleoptera) of Continental Europe north of 52 ° N and of the British Isles. 50 species are included. For each species a short diagnosis and detailed information on the taxonomy, nomenclature, geographic distribution, life habits, hosts and parasites is given. The book contains keys from family level to species and is finely illustrated with over 100 black and white drawings, almost all of which are originals drawn by the author and furthermore with four plates showing 35 representative species skilfully depicted in colour by Birgitte Rubæk. The introductory part provides general information on the taxonomic history, morphology of all life stages, life history and economic importance, comments on phylogeny and classification and some practical hints on how to collect, preserve and identify specimens. In addition lists of hosts and parasites, a catalogue of occurrence by province for the 33 species found in Fennoscandia and Denmark, an extensive list of literature and an index are given. The main objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive systematic treatment of the North European Nemonychidae, Anthribidae and Attelabidae based on richly illustrated identification keys and descriptions combined with up-to-date information on the distribution and biology of individual species. Volume 34 of this series treated the Brentidae. These volumes thus complete the treatment of the four orthocerous weevil families (weevils with straight antennae) within the superfamily Curculionoidea, and are indispensable for anyone - professional or amateur - working with or interested in weevils.

Download or read book The Flowering of Ecology written by Kay Etheridge and published by Emergence of Natural History. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Flowering of Ecology presents an English translation of Maria Sibylla Merian's 1679 'caterpillar' book, Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumen-Nahrung. Her processes in making the book and an analysis of its scientific content are presented in a historical context. Merian raised insects for five decades, recording the food plants, behavior and ecology of roughly 300 species. Her most influential invention was an 'ecological' composition in which the metamorphic cycles of insects (usually moths and butterflies) were arrayed around plants that served as food for the caterpillars. Kay Etheridge analyzes the 1679 caterpillar book from the viewpoint of a biologist, arguing that Merian's study of insect interactions with plants, the first of its kind, was a formative contribution to natural history.

Book excerpt: In Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, volume 5, Keith P. Bland offers a comprehensive account of the British members of the moth family TORTRICIDAE sensu lato. For ease of handling, it is divided into two Volumes: Part 1, the Tortricinae & Chlidanotinae, and Part 2, the Olethreutinae. Each volume is self-contained and indexed separately. For each species there is included a full taxonomy, a description of the adult moth, an account of the larval stages and its life history. The up-to-date British distribution for each species is given as maps showing vice-county occurrence, supported with further detail where relevant. Each species is illustrated by means of one or more coloured photographs of mounted specimens, proportionally sized. For all species, the male and female genitalia are depicted by Josef Razowski’s excellent line drawings. Besides an index to the moth species, there is a comprehensive index to larval food substrates. The original text was formed by the late E.F. (‘Ted’) Hancock and extended and updated by Keith P. Bland. Photographs of the adult moths were done by the latter and line drawings of the genitalia were all done by Josef Razowski.
