Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notices and Documents Illustrative of the Literary History of Glasgow: During the Greater Part of Last Century IN presenting the following Notices and Documents to the Members of the maitland club, some apology may be deemed necessary for the substitution of a work of recent origin for one of earlier date, - and for the title which has been adopted. Hitherto no work has appeared which contains much information regarding the literature of Glasgow, and the Arts connected with it, during the last century. The materials for such a work are so much scattered, that the editor conceived that an attempt to collect them might not be unacceptable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by the TLS as 'a formidable bibliographical achievement ... destined to become a key reference work for Shakespeareans', Shakespeare in Print is now issued in a revised and expanded edition offering a wealth of new material, including a chapter which maps the history of digital editions from the earliest computer-generated texts to the very latest digital resources. Murphy's narrative offers a masterful overview of the history of Shakespeare publishing and editing, teasing out the greater cultural significance of the ways in which the plays and poems have been disseminated and received over the centuries from Shakespeare's time to our own. The opening chapters have been completely rewritten to offer close engagement with the careers of the network of publishers and printers who first brought Shakespeare to print, additional material has been added to all chapters, and the chronological appendix has been updated and expanded.

Book Tobias Smollett in the Enlightenment

Download or read book Tobias Smollett in the Enlightenment written by Richard J. Jones and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) is best known today as a novelist, but in the eighteenth-century, he was regarded as a historian and critic. In this book, Richard J. Jones explores the diversity of Smollett's journalistic and literary writings and establishes new connections between Smollett's work and writers of the Scottish Enlightenment. The book takes as its focal point Smollett's visit to Nice, between 1763 and 1765, and the account he wrote of it in Travels through France and Italy (1766). This account is usually seen as a "travel narrative" but Jones argues that it should be read as a "pocket encyclopedia" in the tradition of Voltaire. Jones divides his study into sections on medicine, fine art, the theater and history. In doing so, he offers a productive juxtaposition of authors, texts and contexts, presenting Smollett as a writer whose Scottish (and particularly Glaswegian) identity informed his involvement in a wider European Enlightenment.

Book Thomas Reid Essays on the Active Powers of Man

Download or read book Thomas Reid Essays on the Active Powers of Man written by Thomas Reid and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Essays on the Active Powers of Man (1788) was Thomas Reid's last major work. It was conceived as part of one large work, intended as a final synoptic statement of his philosophy. The first and larger part was published three years earlier as Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man (edited as vol. 3 of the Edinburgh Edition of Thomas Reid). These two works are united by Reid's basic philosophy of common sense, which sets out native principles by which the mind operates in both its intellectual and active aspects. The Active Powers shows how these principles are involved in volition, action, and the ability to judge morally. Reid gives an original twist to a libertarian and realist tradition that was prominently represented in eighteenth-century British thought by such thinkers as Samuel Clarke and Richard Price.

Book Rational Piety and Social Reform in Glasgow

Download or read book Rational Piety and Social Reform in Glasgow written by Stephen Cowley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Mylne (1757-1839) taught moral philosophy and political economy in Glasgow from 1797 to the mid-1830s. Rational Piety and Social Reform in Glasgow offers readers Mylne's biography, a summary of his lectures on moral philosophy and political economy, several interpretative essays, and a collation of his introductory lecture. Mylne's moral philosophy lectures cover the intellectual and active powers of man and offer an account of his duties to God, neighbor, and self. He diverges from the "moral sense" and "common sense" traditions associated with Francis Hutcheson and Thomas Reid in Glasgow. He reinstates reason as the guiding principle of conscience and argues for utility as the predominant criterion of morality. Mylne was also active among the Whig "friends of Mr. Fox" and in the Glasgow Reform Association, for his theory of the sovereignty of reason drove his view of political reform and the concept of value in his lectures on political economy. In a criticism of Adam Smith, Mylne interprets use-value as prior to exchange value, founding it in lawful desires identifiable by a merchant community. Mylne's political opinions and activity among local political reformers and literary societies exemplify the Glasgow Whig tradition.
