S. will have occasion to put its principles into practice in the not distant future. The book used as a text for these conferences is little more than an outline of a subject which has been more exhaustively treated by many other writers. Among these the best known is Clause-witz, whose writings followed close upon the Napoleonic wars. Although he spent twelve years in this work he never completed it to his satisfaction. The manuscript left by him was, however, finally published in the exact shape in which it was found. Clausewitz, who has given us this most profound analysis of war, is perhaps more responsible than any other man, for the trend of modern military thought in Europe, and, according to Colonel Maude, furnishes the key to the interpretation of German political aims - past, present and future. He reveals war, stripped of all accessories, as the exercise of force for the attainment of a political object, unrestrained by any law save that of expediency.
