Book excerpt: The annual Lenten pilgrimage to dozens of Rome’s most striking churches is a sacred tradition dating back almost two millennia, to the earliest days of Christianity. Along this historic spiritual pathway, today’s pilgrims confront the mysteries of the Christian faith through a program of biblical and early Christian readings amplified by some of the greatest art and architecture of western civilization. In Roman Pilgrimage, bestselling theologian and papal biographer George Weigel, art historian Elizabeth Lev, and photographer Stephen Weigel lead readers through this unique religious and aesthetic journey with magnificent photographs and revealing commentaries on the pilgrimage’s liturgies, art, and architecture. Through reflections on each day’s readings about faith and doubt, heroism and weakness, self-examination and conversion, sin and grace, Rome’s familiar sites take on a new resonance. And along that same historical path, typically unexplored treasures—artifacts of ancient history and hidden artistic wonders—appear in their original luster, revealing new dimensions of one of the world’s most intriguing and multi-layered cities. A compelling guide to the Eternal City, the Lenten Season, and the itinerary of conversion that is Christian life throughout the year, Roman Pilgrimage reminds readers that the imitation of Christ through faith, hope, and love is the template of all true discipleship, as the exquisite beauty of the Roman station churches invites reflection on the deepest truths of Christianity.

Book Church Representation Rules 2022

Download or read book Church Representation Rules 2022 written by Church of England and published by Church House Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church Representation Rules is a vital tool for all those involved in parochial, diocesan and national Church governance. This 2022 edition incorporates the contents of the four Amendment Resolutions (2019-2022) passed since the 2020 edition was published. These include rules governing mission initiatives, online voting, term limits and more. The Rules aim to simplify local church governance and enable parishes to adapt the rules to best serve ministry and mission in their contexts. They cover aspects of local church governance including: * the formation and revision of the electoral roll; * the minimum qualifying age for election to the Parochial Church Council or the deanery synod and methods of voting at the Annual Parochial Church Meetings; * chairmanship of the Parochial Church Council and the number and term of office of its lay members; * membership of deanery and diocesan synods and how the number of lay members to be elected to them is calculated; * membership of, and elections to, the House of Laity of the General Synod.

Book The Parish Churches of the Diocese of Canterbury

Download or read book The Parish Churches of the Diocese of Canterbury written by Thomas H. Oyler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parish Churches of the Diocese of Canterbury: With Descriptive Notes The success which has attended the small books 'Notes on the Cathedrals' emboldens the editor to attempt a series on the Parish Churches of England. The first volume is naturally devoted to the Diocese of Canterbury, and by special permission is dedicated to His Grace the Archbishop. It will be noticed that the illustrations are of the exterior of the buildings only, the descriptive notes being more especially devoted to the interior and to the history. For it is the exteriors that help to charm the English landscape, and so often draw from the traveller the exclamation, 'What a delightful old church!' All the Churches are illustrated; for although some of them may be wanting in beauty, there is not one that has not an interest of some sort. Our taste and our love will, of course, be for the Mediaeval building, for the 'ivy-mantled tower, ' or the historic monuments, but it will be a great mistake if we overlook the strikingly beautiful buildings which have been erected in recent years. Thanks are due to those of the Clergy who have supplied valuable information about the buildings. It is to be regretted that exigencies of space prevent the inclusion of much interesting matter. Mr. Oyler has visited every Church, and again regret is felt that for only a part of his notes is there room in the book. A few historical facts have been gleaned from Murray's 'Handbook of Kent, ' Mr. Walter Jerrold's 'Highways and Byways in Kent' (Macmillan), and Mr. Clinch's 'Little Guide to Kent' (Methuen) - all most useful and delightful volumes. The arrangement of the volume is in Deaneries, and as far as possible alphabetical, but the shape of the photographs, or the grouping of united benefices, has on several pages necessitated modification of the plan. In all cases the patron of the living is given. When the name is omitted the gift is with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Five of the Views of Canterbury Cathedral are from the copyrights of The Photochrom Co. All other illustrations have been specially taken by Messrs. De'ath and Dunk, of Maidstone, who have in other ways been of great service in the preparation of the volume. Book The Colonial Churches of St Thomas Parish Orange County Virginia

Download or read book The Colonial Churches of St Thomas Parish Orange County Virginia written by Lizabeth Ward Papageorgiou and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2008 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. ThomasΓ Parish in Virginia was formed from St. MarkΓ s Parish in 1740. The new parish encompassed present-day Orange, Greene, and a strip of southern Madison counties. Based on an extensive examination of primary sources, the work at hand is the first accurate description of the formation of St. ThomasΓ Parish, its member churches, its ministers, and others who played a significant part in its colonial history. In the absence of surviving vestry books for St. ThomasΓ Parish, or even an accurate map of the parish, the author was able to extract valuable information pertaining to St. ThomasΓ Parish from the surviving vestry books of the neighboring parishes of St. MarkΓ s and St. GeorgeΓ s. However, as Mrs. Papageorgiou explains in her Preface, Spotsylvania and Orange County road orders comprise the backbone of her study. The road orders for the construction and maintenance of roads, as recorded in county court order books, provide evidence to the existence of churches and chapels throughout the parish. The road ordersΓ value to the genealogist is that they identify the overseers and work crews assigned to maintain the road and any bridges along it. So, for example, the road orders tell us that, between November 1, 1726, and April 2, 1734, John Rucker, Thomas Jackson, Joseph Hawkins, Abraham Bledsoe, Henry Downes, John Davis, and George Eastham all served as overseers of roads near Southwest Mountain Chapel in St. ThomasΓ Parish. This work is an excellent example of historical reconstruction. The Introduction explains how, when, and why St. ThomasΓ was established from its parent and grandparent parishes, St. MarkΓ s and St. GeorgeΓ s. Next, the author uses the road orders and other sources to pinpoint the timing and location of each of the following places of worship: Germana Church, Southwest Mountain Chapel, Southwest Mountain Church, Upper Chapel, St. ThomasΓ Parish, Upper Church, Middle (Brick) Church, Pine Stake Church, and New (Orange) Church. (Mrs. Papageorgiou has also appended a number of important court orders at the back of the volume.) The third chapter gives the tenure of every parish minister and his family members. The final chapter recounts how previous writers--notably Bishop William Meade and Philip Slaughter--have recorded the history of St. ThomasΓ Parish and where, more often than not, they went astray. Students of Virginia church history will welcome the comprehensive bibliography that follows the appendices.

Book Notes on St Martin s Church and Parish Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on St Martin s Church and Parish Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on St. Martin's Church and Parish My friend, Mr. Baker, has asked me to write a few words of introduction to the Notes which he has compiled on St. Martin's Church. The Book owes its origin to a small cause. A few years ago a sermon was preached at St. Martin's, in which some account was given of the history of the Church and its ornaments. It aroused considerable interest, and as some members of the con gregation expressed a desire to, see the information in print, Mr. Baker kindly_undertook the publication of a leaflet, which should serve as a guide for visitors, containing a brief summary of the different points to be noticed in the fabric of the Church, &c. It was felt, however, that there was so much more to be said on the subject, and so much interesting material to draw from in the Churchwardens' Accounts, Vestry Books, and documents in the Church Chests, that Mr. Baker consented to do a further service, and collect and record all that he thought would be of value to those who desired to know more of the history which gathered round their Parish Church. The result is now given to the reader in the following pages. To the writer, the Book, which is the outcome of many hours of research, has been a labour of love, but he would not wish it to be regarded as more than a collection of Notes. As such, however, it is a veritable mine of wealth, from which a great deal of interesting and valuable information can be drawn. Mr. Baker deserves our warmest thanks for placing so many facts within our reach, and helping us to realise something of the part which our old Church and Parish have played in the history of this City and Country.
