Book Chromosome identification Medicine and Natural Sciences

Download or read book Chromosome identification Medicine and Natural Sciences written by Torbjoern Caspersson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1973-01-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chromosome Identification—Technique and Applications in Biology and Medicine contains the proceedings of the Twenty-Third Nobel Symposium held at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, on September 25-27,1972. The papers review advances in chromosome banding techniques and their applications in biology and medicine. Techniques for the study of pattern constancy and for rapid karyotype analysis are discussed, along with cytological procedures; karyotypes in different organisms; somatic cell hybridization; and chemical composition of chromosomes. This book is comprised of 51 chapters divided into nine sections and begins with a survey of the cytological procedures, including fluorescence banding techniques, constitutive heterochromatin (C-band) technique, and Giemsa banding technique. The following chapters explore computerized statistical analysis of banding pattern; the use of distribution functions to describe integrated profiles of human chromosomes; the uniqueness of the human karyotype; and the application of somatic cell hybridization to the study of gene linkage and complementation. The mechanisms for certain chromosome aberration are also analyzed, together with fluorescent banding agents and differential staining of human chromosomes after oxidation treatment. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of biology and medicine.

Book A Revision of the Grasshopper Genus Orthochtha and Allies Orthoptera Acrididae Acridinae

Download or read book A Revision of the Grasshopper Genus Orthochtha and Allies Orthoptera Acrididae Acridinae written by G. B. Popov and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of the large grasshopper genus Orthochtha are widely distributed throughout the Afrotropics with some representatives in India and the Far East. The taxonomy of the genus has, however, long been recognized by acridologists to be unsatisfactory. This publication provides a thorough revision of Orthochtha together with seven allied genera, of which three are erected here. In all, 36 species and 11 subspecies are treated, of which 16 species and 5 subspecies are described here as new. All taxa are diagnosed, illustrated, keyed, mapped and their affinities discussed. The biogeography of the group is considered and a synopsis of the available information of the biology, ecology and economic importance given for each species. This book will be of use both to taxonomists and to agricultural field workers, particularly in Africa.

Book Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects Plecoptera

Download or read book Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects Plecoptera written by Charles W. Heckman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-10-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a series designed to facilitate identification of South American insects likely to be encountered in, on, or near water, on wetlands, and in unusual aquatic habitats. It permits identification of all known adults and larvae. Each volume of the Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects begins with a short general introduction. The scope of this volume is the Plecoptera. It includes all species known from South America as of the year 2002 and permits a state-of-the-art identification of the species. In the case of specimens belonging to undescribed species or those not previously reported from South America, it permits identification to genus or family and gives the reader reasonable certainty that his specimen does not belong to the known fauna of the continent. The keys are richly illustrated to permit non-specialists in the group to reliably identify specimens. Taxonomic revisions are intentionally avoided, but doubtful taxa are so designated in the keys. The volume is meant for anyone interested in identifying aquatic stoneflies, including entomologists, stream biologists, ecologists, zoogeographers, fishery biologists, and naturalists. Book Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects Hemiptera Heteroptera

Download or read book Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects Hemiptera Heteroptera written by Charles W. Heckman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemiptera - Heteroptera encompasses the three well-defined suborders of the true bugs which are adapted to an aquatic or littoral habitat. The book begins with a section on the biology these insects and provides illustrations of the basic features of their morphology and outlines the larval development. Brief outlines of the ecological and zoogeographical peculiarities of the three aquatic suborders are presented individually, and various methods for observing, collecting, preserving, rearing, and examining specimens are discussed. Most of the book is devoted to keys for the identification of adults to species, and notes are provided that will help recognize the known larvae. Unlike most other aquatic insects, the larval instars of the heteropteran species closely resemble the adults in their morphology, preferred habitats, and feeding habits. Therefore, distinguishing features of those relatively few larvae which have been described in detail are usually mentioned in the keys to the adults rather than being included in separate keys. In addition to the most important features for determining the individual species, many keys include additional notes on the morphology, which is intended to give the user a better chance of recognizing specimens of species not yet known to science. After the currently recognized name of each species, the known range is provided. Regions of the world outside of South America, South American countries, and the states of Brazil from which the species has been reported are listed. Following the range information, major synonyms previously used for the species in the literature are provided. If subspecies have been described and are still recognized as such, they are also discussed. Finally, if the status of the species is regarded as uncertain because of a poor description, strong resemblance to another species, or any other reason, a note is added that a detailed study will be necessary to clarify the status of the taxon. Taxonomic revisions in the book itself are strictly avoided. To provide the user of the keys with maximum assistance in making reliable identifications, the book is richly illustrated with pen and ink drawings of thousands of individual morphological structures arranged in 820 figures. The book is intended to make a significant impact toward popularizing the study of South American water bugs by assembling and condensing the information in hundreds of individual publications on the group, which appeared in many books and journals published in many different countries over the past 200 years. Some of these works are very difficult to obtain in South America, and their lack creates serious impediments to systematic, ecological, and zoogeographical research. In the more than 730 titles appearing in the bibliography, the original descriptions and revisions of almost all South American species can be found.

Book Locust and Grasshopper Fauna Orthoptera

Download or read book Locust and Grasshopper Fauna Orthoptera written by Hirdesh Kumar and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the economically important species of locusts and grasshoppers belong to Superfamily Acridoidea. They constitute an economically important group of Orthopterous pests infesting a number of cultivated and non-cultivated crops and are well known for their destructiveness all over the world. They are serious pests of agricultural crops, pastures and forests. They are also called short-horned grasshoppers in contrast to Ensifera (Tettigonoidea and Grylloidea) or long-horned grasshoppers which constitute one of the other suborder of Orthoptera. Suborder Caelifera is divided into four superfamilies viz. Acridoidea, Tridactyloidea, Tetrigoidea and Eumastacoidea. Acridoidea possess short antennae, usually shorter than the body, a short and stout ovipositor and their tarsi are three-segmented. The other superfamilies of Caelifera are easily recognizable at sight and are not frequently encountered. Superfamily Acridoidea has shown maximum diversity and divided into various families of which family Acrididae is widely distributed in India. The Superfamily Acridoidea constitute the largest and most diverse group amongst the Orthoptera. A very high degree of adaptive radiation in the feeding apparatus of this group of Orthoptera is indicative of their diverse feeding habits. The present proposal was aimed at studying large number of species of Acrididae which were collected from different regions of North India. The status of various characters used in the identification were judged on the basis of their consistency and variation to ascertain their importance in the group. An in-depth study helps in understanding the biodiversity and phylogeny of this group. The identification keys have been prepared to make identification easy. It is hoped that this book will bring the nomenclature of Indian Acrididae up to-date and will be useful to workers both in applied and basic research. The object of this book is to provide taxonomist, economic entomologist, agriculturist, ecologist and others with up to-date information on the valid genera and species along with their distribution in different parts of the country. The distribution of each species are given in the text. The authors have included their own observations on the distribution of Acrididae in North Indian regions which was ignored by earlier workers. The proposal has a great importance from the point of view of both applied and fundamental knowledge. Visualizing the economic importance of these pests the present book has been prepared.Work done and objectives achieved 1. Geographic area under North India have been extensively surveyed and Acridid samples have been collected.2. The collected specimens were studied in detail and described and illustrated taxonomically.3. Genitalic plates of the described taxa have been provided that complement the descriptions.4. Color photographs of the taxa have also been added to the descriptions that ease the identification of the same.5. A master chart depicting total specimens, their distribution, concentration areas, host plants etc. has been provided.6. Host range has been provided along with information on habitat, latitude and altitude..
