Book excerpt: Zheng He’s Maritime Voyages (1405-1433) and China’s Relations with the Indian Ocean World: A Multilingual Bibliography provides a multidisciplinary guide to publications on this great navigator’s activities and their impact on Chinese and world history. Admiral Zheng He commanded the fifteenth-century world’s largest fleet. In the course of seven voyages made between 1405 and 1433, his massive ships visited over thirty present-day countries in Asia and Africa. Those voyages reflected and reinforced the development of complex networks of trade, migration, cultural exchange, and political interactions between China and the Indian Ocean world. This bibliography lists sources in thirteen languages, including both scholarly studies and popular works like Gavin Menzies’s controversial bestsellers claiming the Chinese sailed around the world before Columbus. Relevant translations, transliterations and annotations are provided to aid the reader.

Book Admiral Zheng He and Southeast Asia

Download or read book Admiral Zheng He and Southeast Asia written by Leo Suryadinata and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2005 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admiral Zheng He and Southeast Asia commemorates the 600th anniversary of Admiral Zheng Hes maiden voyage to Southeast Asia and beyond. The book is jointly issued by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore and the International Zheng He Society. To reflect Asian views on the subject matter, nine articles written by Asian scholars Chung Chee Kit, Hsu Yun-Tsiao, Leo Suryadinata, Tan Ta Sen, Tan Yeok Seong, Wang Gungwu, and Johannes Widodo have been reproduced in this volume. Originally published from 1964 to 2005, the articles are grouped into three clusters. The first cluster of three articles examines the relationship of the Ming court, especially during the Zheng He expeditions, with Southeast Asia in general and the Malacca empire in particular. The next cluster looks at the socio-cultural impact of the Zheng He expeditions on some Southeast Asian countries, with special reference to the role played by Zheng He in the Islamization of Indonesia (Java) and the urban architecture of the region. The last three articles deal with the route of the Zheng He expeditions and the location of the places that were visited.

Book China s Seaborne Trade with South and Southeast Asia 1200 1750

Download or read book China s Seaborne Trade with South and Southeast Asia 1200 1750 written by Roderich Ptak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1999 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second selection of studies by Professor Ptak focuses on Chinese maritime trade in the medieval and early modern periods. The first section deals with contacts between China and individual places, in particular Timor, the Sulu Islands, southern India and the islands of the Indian Ocean. Chinese geographical and other accounts of these areas and the trade routes leading to them are examined and where possible, compared with Arabic and Western works from the colonial period. The second part looks at trade in specific commodities such as sandalwood, coral, horses, tortoise-shell, ebony, cloves and tea. Relevant Chinese terms, the uses of each commodity, and the production and distribution are analysed. Both qualitative and quantitative information is drawn from the sources and it is demonstrated that many trade items were much more significant in international business than has been thought. At the same time, these studies highlight the importance of Chinese consumption in driving world commodity flows.

I repeatedly found myself slowing down to savor the material. Many of the essays in this collection are no longer easily accessible, and placing them together in a single volume will be a great benefit to the next generation of students and scholars. "—Joseph W. Esherick, author of The Origins of the Boxer Uprising "This book brings together the best of Frederic Wakeman's articles, all of which are beautifully written and represent the remarkable breadth of Wakeman's research. The opportunity to read them together sheds new light on Chinese history and on the thought processes of one of the West's greatest historians."—Madeleine Zelin, Director of the East Asian National Resource Center at Columbia University

Abstract: It is -undeniable, though not universally recognized, that ChSng Ho, the first and greatest Chinese navigators was one of the pioneers in the world history of navigation. He passed through the various countries in the Malay and Indian Archipelagos, and visited the places round the Arabian and Hed Seas* reaching the Eastern coast of Africa early in the fifteenth century He began his expeditions to these places some five hundred and sixty years ago - nearly a century before Vasco da G-ama discovered the Hew Route to the East round the Cape of Good Hope As a great navigator, only Christopher Columbus, perhaps, can be said to be comparable to him However, his importance had been long neglected until the nineteen thirties when many scholars showed their keen interest in the study of ChUng Hoo During this decade, quite a number of thorough studies were made by Paul Pelliot* J J L Duyvandak* Tatsuro 0 0 B Yamamoto, fng Ch'Sng-chun, ChUng Ho-shng and some others; and in recent years, some contemporary scholars like Chu Hsieh, Chou Yu-shn and Hsu Yu-hu have also made consider- able effort in the study of the same subject* As a result, it seems that not much room has been left for me to make any original contribution to the 1'further study of this subject, but ay teacher, Mr* Lo Heiang-ltn, being a renovmed historian and an authority in the study of the history of Chinese communications between South-east Asia and the Vest, had the foresight that farther original contribution could still be made, and told me that it might be a suitable subject for re- search, .Following Mr. Lo*s suggestion, I have pursued my study for the past four years and found out several important points that have not been included in previous studies" For instance; that Ch$ng Ho was a descendant of Arab stock; the definition of Hsi DEGREESyangj the creation of a Chinese *Commonwealth1} and the fundamental cause leading to the discontinuance of the Ming maritime expeditions are my own discoveries, --* As to the material used, there are sources that have never been used in the study of ChSng Ho before, such as Kuo-ohueh* Ho-shih chiu-lang tsu-t DEGREESu. gu-hai fang-oh'Sng. Szil-i K;uana>oh,3, and Oh'u-tS lu. All these books are very helpful in the explanation of tha diplomatic policy of the Chinese emperors early in the Ming dynasty. This thesis is a comprehensive study of the Chng Ho*s expeditions to the Western Ocean with special emphasis on the historical facts and persons participating in these 2expeditions. It is not ay intention to be absorbed in the details of the identifioation of places and other facts that have been thoroughly studied" The main purpose is to explain the background and the importance of these maritime expeditions. Uy heartiest gratitude goes to my teachers* Prof* jb\S. Drake, OoB..h) and B&*o Lo Hsiang-lin, of both of whom I have been a student continuously for ten years since I was admitted to the University of Hong Kong in 1954.. I must acknowledge that without their most constructive directions and wise guidance, it would have been impossible for me to attempt this thesis* SU Chung Jen February, 1964, DOI: 10.5353/th_b3160199
