Book Notes on Neotropical Tabanidae Diptera XIX

Download or read book Notes on Neotropical Tabanidae Diptera XIX written by G.B. Fairchild and published by Entomological Society of America. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called "lined horse flies, " "striped horse flies, " or "lineola complex" have been among the most difficult of American Tabanus species to characterize and identify. Hine (1906), Krober (1933), Philip (1942), and Fairchild (1942) all devoted special publications to segments of the group, while Bequaert (1940a) gave a key to the Trinidad species. No one so far has attempted to bring together all the Nearctic and Neotropical species. In this monograph, I give a synonymical list of the species here considered valid, an alphabetical checklist of the names that have been used for species of the group, the valid names in boldface, keys to both sexes, and notes on individual species, arranged in alphabetical order. Citations to the original descriptions of names discussed may be found in the catalogues of Philip, in Stone et al. (1965), or Fairchild (1971). Those described subsequent to 1971 appear with appropriate citation in the checklist.

Book Insect Physiology and Ecology

Download or read book Insect Physiology and Ecology written by Vonnie D.C. Shields and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses recent contributions focusing on insect physiology and ecology written by experts in their respective fields. Four chapters in this book are dedicated to evaluating the morphological and ecological importance and distribution of water beetles, dung beetles, weevils, and tabanids, while two others investigate the symbiotic relationships between various insects and their associations with bacteria, fungi, or mites. Two other chapters consider insecticide detoxification, as well as insect defense mechanisms against infections. The last two chapters concentrate on insects as sustainable food. This book targets a wide audience of general biologists, as well as entomologists, ecologists, zoologists, virologists, and epidemiologists, including both teachers and students in gaining a better appreciation of this rapidly growing field.

Book Medical Insects and Arachnids

Download or read book Medical Insects and Arachnids written by R.P. Lane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprising though it seems, the world faces almost as great a threat today from arthropod-borne diseases as it did in the heady days of the 1950s when global eradication of such diseases by eliminating their vectors with synthetic insecticides, particularly DDT, seemed a real possibility. Malaria, for example, still causes tremendous morbidity and mortality throughout the world, especially in Africa. Knowledge of the biology of insect and arachnid disease vectors is arguably more important now than it has ever been. Biological research directed at the development of better methods of control becomes even more important in the light of the partial failure of many control schemes that are based on insecticide- although not all is gloom, since basic biological studies have contributed enormously to the outstanding success of international control programmes such as the vast Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa. It is a sine qua non for proper understanding of the epidemiology and successful vector control of any human disease transmitted by an arthropod that all concerned with the problem - medical entomologist, parasitologist, field technician - have a good basic understanding of the arthropod's biology. Knowledge will be needed not only of its direct relationship to any parasite or pathogen that it transmits but also of its structure, its life history and its behaviour - in short, its natural history. Above all, it will be necessary to be sure that it is correctly identified.
