Book Notes on II Samuel Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on II Samuel Classic Reprint written by J. Davies and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on II. Samuel I. and II. Samuel make in the Jewish Canon but one book, - bearing the prophet's name. The division of the work into two originated in the Septuagint and Vulgate Versions, in which the parts are called respectively, I. and II. Kings. The authorship of Samuel is pretty clearly indicated in I. Chron. xxix. 29, - "Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer." It is generally supposed that Nathan, who lived on into Solomon's reign, compiled the work from three sources: - 1. The national annals kept by the scribes. 2. The special records of contemporary events, written by Samuel, Gad, and himself. As Samuel's death is the first thing mentioned in I. Sam. xxv., we must limit his share in the narrative to cs. i.-xxiv. of that book. 3. Some book of poetry. "Samuel" may have been bestowed as the title of the whole book in its original form: - 1. Because Samuel was the most distinguished, and the earliest, of the writers contributing to it; or 2. Because he had so much to do with the most prominent persons and events in Book I., especially with regard to the change of government. "II. Samuel" is, of course, a misnomer, since Samuel had no share in its composition. But, as it formerly made part of the complete work bearing the prophet's name, the title was retained after the original book was split into two. The date of the compilation of Samuel is not known; it must, however, have been written in its present form before the death of David, since it does not narrate that event. Notes of the late Prof. Duncan H. Weir, extending as far as 2 Sam. 4, 13 1, was offered to me. Know ing, from the extracts in Prof. Cheyne's [said/z the value of Dr. Weir's suggestions, I thankfully availed myself of the offer. It does not seek to dupli cate other commentaries to Which the student must turn. Its chief characteristics are (0) its rigid exclusion of all processes, both critical and exegetical, from its notes; (6) its presupposition and its use of the assured results of historical investigation and criticism Wherever such results throw light on the biblical text; (0) its running analysis both in text and comment; (d) its brief explana tory notes adapted to the rapid reader; (3) its thorough but brief Introductions, (f) its use of the Revised Version of 1881, supplemented With all important renderings in other versions. Kings: The Common Version Revised With an Introduction and Occasional Notes Tee Old Testament narrative is not only a rich literary source, from which all our serious prose and poetry draw ideas and ex pressive forms of speech: it is a history, recording the life of a people that has influenced the course of human affairs. A modern man, therefore, can hardly understand either his native litera ture or the society he lives in, without knowing something of the story of Israel. Book Notes on the Hebrew Text of the Books of Samuel

Download or read book Notes on the Hebrew Text of the Books of Samuel written by S. R. Driver and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Hebrew Text of the Books of Samuel: With an Introduction on Hebrew Palaeography and the Ancient Versions, and Facsimiles of Inscriptions The present volume is designed as a contribution to the philology and textual criticism of the Old Testament. It may, I hope, be found useful as a sequel to Mr. Spurrell's Notes on Genesis. The Books of Samuel are not so suitable as a reading book for a beginner in Hebrew as some of the other historical books: for though they contain classical examples of a chaste and beautiful Hebrew prose style, they have suffered unusually from transcriptional corruption, and hence raise frequently questions of text, with which a beginner is evidently not in a position to deal. But for one who has made further progress in the language, they afford an admirable field for study: they familiarize him with many of the most characteristic idioms of the language, and at the same time introduce him to the grounds and principles of the textual criticism of the Old Testament. The idiomatic knowledge of Hebrew is best acquired by an attentive and repeated study of the Hebrew prose writers; and I have made it my aim throughout not merely to explain (so far as this was possible) the text of the Books of Samuel, but also to point out and illustrate, as fully as seemed needful, the principal idiomatic usages which they exemplify. In the Introduction I have sought to bring within reach of the student materials - especially relating to Inscriptions - often with difficulty accessible, including matter which, at least to some readers, will probably be new. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book of Samuel: With Map, Notes and Introduction The two most important mss. Of the LXX containing the book of Samuel are the Alexandrine ms. (denoted by the letter A) written in the fifth century. And now preserved in the British Museum; and the Vatican ms. (denoted by the letter B) assigned to the fourth century, and preserved in the Vatican Library at Rome. The text of the former in the Book of Samuel has been corrected for the most part to agree with the existing Hebrew text: that of the latter differs considerably from it, and although disfigured by mistakes, glosses, marginal notes inserted in the text by ignorant scribes, and similar defects, appears to preserve evidence for an original text older and in some places more correct than the existing Hebrew recensionl. That the Hebrew text of Samuel is by no means free from errors is clear from internal considerations and from a com parison of the passages which exist in duplicate elsewhere. These, with the exception of 1 Sam. Xxxi. Chr. X. 1 - 12) belong to the Second Book, and need not be enumerated here. The principal readings in which the Septuagint differs from the Hebrew are mentioned in the notes, partly with a View to the criticism of the text, partly to exhibit the form of the text which was current in a great part of the Christian Church for many centuries after its first foundation. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Notes on the Books of the Old and New Testaments The arguments for fixing the age of any book, or por tion of a book, rest upon the comparison of the history therein mentioned, whether directly or indirectly, with the political state of the nation as known from the other books. In stating these arguments, the Author will perhaps seem to some readers to be too short, and to have given the reasons for forming his Opinions too scantily. But he supposes his readers well acquainted with the Bible; and therefore he has contented himself, when putting forward his opinion, with leaving to the reader the task of completing the argument for himself, by the help of the passages referred to, as well as of weighing how far the circumstances mentioned support the opinion advanced.
