This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Introductory to the Course of Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic, in Jefferson Medical College: Session MDCCCXXXII-III It is a remarkable fact, that though there is no class of men who have been so much devoted to science in modern times as the members of our profession, yet in none of the physical sciences has the inductive philosophy been admitted with more reluctance than in medicine. Apollo was formerly the God of physicians as well as poets - and it will be admitted that none of his worshippers offered more abundant gifts Upon his altars, or performed their prostrations with more zeal and devotion - But the spirit Of the inductive philosophy has at length arisen, and, with an unsparing hand and homely good sense, brought about a medical reformation. The consequence has been, that the altars of the false God have been thrown down, and his image trampled in the dust, and the temple of nature and the spirit of truth substituted in their place. From this' altar, every offering of the imagination is rejected: its motto is, Observation and experiment. The maxims of the inductive philosophy have been-more and more strictly adhered to in anatomy, physiology, and several departments of surgery. The brilliant discoveries of the circulation of the blood; of the structure and functions of the lymphatics; the magnificent investigations of Mr. C. Bell on the anatomy and Offices of the nervous system; and the astonishing results of modern operative surgery, are among the glorious fruits of this mode Of philosophizing. In medicine, from various causes, the progress has been slower. The greatest obscurity necessarily pervades all living processes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Delivered in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the University of the State of New York All these were so familiar to him, that they were seldom written. The manuscripts would perhaps contain a memorandum here and there that would remind one who had often heard him, of the many striking and learned illustrations he was in the habit of ad ducing - but could not enable the editor entirely to recover them, or to give them with any thing like tolerable accuracy. And then, the manner could not be represented. The Vivid flashes of his keen eye; his fine, manly, commanding voice; his animation of delivery, rising, as it often did, to enthusiasm; and his graceful, powerful gesticulation - all these are gone. N 0 reader can imagine them. He must have heard, and have seen the man, to understand what he was in his lecture room. Certainly, if he had adopted St. Augustine's rule for preaching, as a rule for his prelections, he could not have come nearer the venerable father's standard of perfection. There was in his style or his manner nothing that appeared like the obtuse, deformiter, frigide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Lecture Introductory to the Course on Materia Medica and General Therapeutics

Download or read book A Lecture Introductory to the Course on Materia Medica and General Therapeutics written by Thomas D. Mitchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture Introductory to the Course on Materia Medica and General Therapeutics: In the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, Delivered October 13th, 1857 Of the varied shadows that give a sombre hue to thelife Of a physician, allow me to name, as entitled to a prominent place, the deficalties encountered by many pu pits in the course of study. These may arise, partly from defects in early education, and in part from want Of pecuniary means. Embarrassments, such as these, are always augmented by a consciousness of ignorance, or a sense of humiliating dependence on others, or by both. When, as sometimes happens, a young man Of very feeble intellect, and of slender literary acquirements, enters on medical studies, he feels not how deficient he is, and, of course, realizes not the difficulties that are soon to gather around him. Such persons are apt to entertain highly favourable notions of their own powers, and at all events have convinced themselves, by what process I know not, that any sort of material may be worked up into a Doctor, and that, therefore, they need not despair. Others there are, whose native powers are of gigantic proportions, who, though far from having been well educated, have become enamoured of medicine, and are devoted to its study. And, however industrious they may be, they meet with hinderances at almost every turn, and their ardour is often suspended. Such per sons are sometimes compelled to protract their studies beyond the limit prescribed by their first calculations, by reason of poverty. The man whose means are very limited, although possessed of a high order of mind, is often forced to be in the rear Of the drone in science, whose purse, it may be, is far better supplied than his head. This may be a source of keen mortification, for which there can be no remedy but patience and perse verance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture, Introductory to the Course on the Theory and Practice of Medicine, in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College: Session of 1846-47 Then, what is life I begin my answer to this question by propounding-another, viz., what is not life and by venturing, in answer, to say that it is inorganic matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Principles and Practice of Medicine: Delivered in Chicago Medical College, Medical Department of the Northwestern University The lectures comprised in this volume, embrace substantially the course of instruction on the principles and practice of medicine given by me in the Medical Department of the Northwestern University, better known as the Chicago Medical College. My method of lecturing being entirely extempore, the lectures comprising the first half of the volume, under the heads of Principles of Medicine and Acute General Diseases, were origi nally reported by Leander Stone, stenographer; and those comprising the rest of the volume, by James E. Henderson, M. D. All the manuscript has been fully revised, and not' a small portion re-written by me in the midst of so great an amount of other professional and literary work, that it has been impossible to bestow upon it sufficient minuteness of attention to avoid all errors in typography and modes of expression. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture, Introductory to a Course on the Principles and Practice of Surgery in the Jefferson Medical College: Delivered November 1st, 1847 In accordance with the established custom, I appear before you this evening for the purpose of bidding you, in the name of the Faculty of this Institution, a hearty wel come to Our Halls, and at the same time of addressing a few words of counsel and advice to those among you, who for the first time visit this great city. And although my theme may prove trite, there is yet no subject more fraught with interest and importance to you. Who are you, my young friends The sons for the most part, of country gentlemen, now thrown for the first time into the vortex of a densely populated metro polis - are you aware Of vour position? Does the desolate feeling of the stranger induce you to think that you are truly alone in the world, with no one to counsel, no one to observe your course of conduct here? Does a feeling ef sadness pass over your spirit, when you reflect that a father's warning voice can no longer be heard; that a dear mother's anxious prayer for her beloved son must be offered up in a spot made sorrowful by your absence; that a sister's fond embrace, and endearing look of love and sympathy, are no longer yours Or do you, rather, rejoicing in what may seem a manly freedom, rudely thrust aside all tender emotions, and rashly determine, in the vulgar phrase, to enjoy life 3 I trust there are but few among you weak and foolish enough to entertain this latter view of your position here. For let me assure you, that when you imagine no one heeds your steps, many anxious eyes are directed upon them. Yes, that venerable parent who hopes to behold in you the staff that Shall support his feeble frame in the days when evening's lengthened shadows and nature's waning powers make manifest, that, for him at least, a new city, and a new world, must soon be sought, watches over you with fear and trembling, and prays that his son may re turn to him all that a father's pride can desire; that mother, too, that mother who watched over you in your cradles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Medicine: Delivered by Professor Chapman, in the University of Pennsylvania IN presenting this work to the public, the author expects it to stand chiefly upon the merits of the great man, in whose volu minous writings it is founded. Elevated on account of extra ordinary talent and learning, at the youthful age of twenty-six, to the adjunct professorship of Obstetrics, in the University of Pennsylvania, he was, seven years afterwards, elected to the professorship of Materia Medica, and, in the thirty-sixth year of his age, was transferred to the Chair most congenial to his tastes and acquisitions - that of the Institutes and Practice of Physic, and Clinical Medicine. For many years past, with few living competitors, he has stood, confessedly, at the summit of his profession. Distinguish ed for his acquaintance with the Opinions of others, he is per haps unsurpassed for originality. They were spoken by one, lowly in spirit, who did himself that which he meekly ordered others to do. During the whole of his manhood, until his death, this Benefactor of mankind went about and healed the sick.
