Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somebody once quipped that any work of Australian historical fiction is a 'burning fuse', travelling over decades through Australian culture and society. In some manner, every newly published Australian historical novel is connected to what it has preceded. Each work belongs to a proud history. Through multiple examples, Grant Rodwell encourages readers to see how a work of historical fiction has evolved. Thus, under various themes, WHOSE HISTORY? examines the traditions in Australian historical fiction, and ponders how Australian historical novels can engage teachers and student teachers. WHOSE HISTORY? aims to illustrate how historical novels and their related genres may be used as an engaging teacher/learning strategy for student teachers in pre-service teacher education courses. It does not argue all teaching of History curriculum in pre-service units should be based on the use of historical novels as a stimulus, nor does it argue for a particular percentage of the use of historical novels in such courses. It simply seeks to argue the case for this particular approach, leaving the extent of the use of historical novels used in History curriculum units to the professional expertise of the lecturers responsible for the units.

Book The Cambridge Economic History of Australia

Download or read book The Cambridge Economic History of Australia written by Simon Ville and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's economic history is the story of the transformation of an indigenous economy and a small convict settlement into a nation of nearly 23 million people with advanced economic, social and political structures. It is a history of vast lands with rich, exploitable resources, of adversity in war, and of prosperity and nation building. It is also a history of human behaviour and the institutions created to harness and govern human endeavour. This account provides a systematic and comprehensive treatment of the nation's economic foundations, growth, resilience and future, in an engaging, contemporary narrative. It examines key themes such as the centrality of land and its usage, the role of migrant human capital, the tension between development and the environment, and Australia's interaction with the international economy. Written by a team of eminent economic historians, The Cambridge Economic History of Australia is the definitive study of Australia's economic past and present.

This masterful novel tells the story of a man who suffers exile through fighting for the future of his people. A leader of the Young Ireland rebellion of 1848, Robert Devereaux is an Irish gentleman who is prepared to hazard a life of privilege in the fight for his country's freedom. transported to Van Diemen's land as a political prisoner, he enters a life that greatly changes him, falling in love with a young Irish convict woman. through Kathleen O'Rahilly he comes to know the people he's long romanticised; but his cause, and the life he has lost, will not let him go.'these novels (Out Of Ireland and Highways to A War) will surely become Australian classics.' - the Australian's Review of Books'Koch is both painter and poet - an acute observer of detail with a language so distilled in its purity as to create the illusion that the reader is also the observer.' Sydney Morning Herald'that it succeeds so well is mainly because Koch is able to capture that voice - grave, measured, beautifully lucid - so well. An impressive and formidable achievement.' Melbourne Age'When you have read Out Of Ireland and set it aside you will have joined a circle of friends who lived and loved and struggled 150 years ago, and you will wonder how long it will be again before you will be able to pick up and read as great and compelling a book again. I warmly comment Out Of Ireland to you all.' Richard O'Brien, Ambassador of Ireland to Australia

Book Colonial Lives of Property

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brenna Bhandar
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2018-05-03
  • ISBN : 082237157X
  • Pages : 237 pages

Download or read book Colonial Lives of Property written by Brenna Bhandar and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Colonial Lives of Property Brenna Bhandar examines how modern property law contributes to the formation of racial subjects in settler colonies and to the development of racial capitalism. Examining both historical cases and ongoing processes of settler colonialism in Canada, Australia, and Israel and Palestine, Bhandar shows how the colonial appropriation of indigenous lands depends upon ideologies of European racial superiority as well as upon legal narratives that equate civilized life with English concepts of property. In this way, property law legitimates and rationalizes settler colonial practices while it racializes those deemed unfit to own property. The solution to these enduring racial and economic inequities, Bhandar demonstrates, requires developing a new political imaginary of property in which freedom is connected to shared practices of use and community rather than individual possession.
