Book The Ballad and the Folk RLE Folklore

Download or read book The Ballad and the Folk RLE Folklore written by David Buchan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ballad is an enduring and universal literary genre. In this book, first published in 1972, David Buchan is concerned to establish the nature of a ballad and of the people who produced it through a study of the regional tradition of the Northeast of Scotland, the most fertile ballad area in Britain. His account of this tradition has two parallel aims, one specifically literary – to investigate the ballad as oral literature – and one broadly ethnographic – to set the regional tradition in its social context. Dr Buchan applies the interesting and important work which has recently been done on oral tradition in Europe on the relationship of the ballad to society to his study of this particular part of Scotland. He examines a nonliterate society to discover what factors besides nonliteracy helped foster its ballad tradition. He analyses the processes of composition and transmission in the oral ballad, and considers the changes which removed nonliteracy, altered social patterns, and seriously affected the ballad tradition. By demonstrating how people who could neither read nor write were able to compose literature of a high order, David Buchan provides a convincing explanation of the ballad’s perennial appeal and an answer to the ‘ballad enigma’. His book is also a valuable study in social history of this culturally distinct region, the Northeast of Scotland.

Download or read book The Beggar s Benison written by David Stevenson and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two clubs, dedicated to proclaiming the joys of libertine sex, thrived in mid and late 18th-century Scotland. The Beggar's Benison (1732), starting from local roots in Fife, became large and sprawling, with branches in Edinburgh, Glasgow - and St Petersburg. As a toast "The Beggar's Benison" was drunk at aristocratic dinners in London as a coded reference to sex, and the Prince of Wales (later George IV) became a member. In Edinburgh, also, the Wig Club (1775) gave the elite of the Scottish Tory establishment a forum in which to dine, gamble and venerate a wig supposedly made of the pubic hairs of the mistresses of Charles II. Both clubs flourished in a great age of raucous clubs in which bawdy often played a prominent part, and both died as changes in sensibility made such behaviour seem gross and unacceptable. As the Victorian age approached, the clubs withered away under its disapproving glare. In this book, the author tells the story of these clubs, analyzes the obscene relics of their rituals which survive, and places the clubs in their social, cultural and political contexts. It is an extensively researched study, but at the same time recognizes the entertainment value of the many anecdotes concerning the clubs, the absurdities inherent in the antics of club rituals, and the appeal of the bawdy.

Download or read book The Cornkister Days written by David Kerr Cameron and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed look at the lives of the Scottish tenant farmers and laborers who worked the land from the late 1700s to the early 1900s. With a knowledge and a skill that reveals his passion for the land and its people, David Kerr Cameron picks his way through the rural upheavals and developments of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries towards the landscape we recognize today. In doing so he provides a wide-sweeping and unforgettable view of our rural history and completes his great rural trilogy portraying the old farming landscapes of Scotland’s North-East Lowlands. Both nostalgia and great understanding are revealed as the author recalls a society based on the plough, a society that moved against the tapestry of the year: “This was the backcloth against which the farmtoun folk lived out their days; its seasons and rituals governed their lives, and ultimately their destinies. Here now is that story, the story of a landscape all but lost before the onward march of agri-business and agri-technology.” The days recalled are the days of the Clydesdale horse and the hired man, the cottar and crofter, the farmtoun tenant, and his laird. Praise for The Cornkister Days “Here you can smell the tang of the soil and hear the jingle of the harness. Cameron takes his place among the great Scottish writers of the last century.” —Jack Webster
