Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notable Voyagers From Columbus to Nordenskiold I possess a curious work sent me many years ago by the Portuguese consul in London, giving an account of the discovery of India by Vasco da Gama, printed from a manuscript in the Public Library at Oporto, by an ancient mariner of that city and which I intended to have trans lated but as the narrative, though trustworthy, is somewhat dry, I have preferred following Gaspar Correa's longer work, Lendas da India, ably done into English by the Hon. H. Stanley. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus and What He Found The immortal deed of Columbus will never lose its hold upon the heart of humanity, Whatever the criticisms upon it. It will always be told, not only for what was found, but because simple heroism - the same element which has immortalized Greek heroic tales - will always move us, head and heart. It is strange that, great and simple as Columbus was, we have made so little use of his story for the children, compared with that of other historic characters. Book The Northmen Columbus and Cabot 985 1503 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Northmen Columbus and Cabot 985 1503 Classic Reprint written by Julius E. Olson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Northmen, Columbus, and Cabot, 985-1503 At its annual meeting in December, 1902, the American Historical Association approved and adopted the plan of the present series, and the undersigned was chosen as its general editor. The purpose of the series was to provide individual readers of history, and the libraries of schools and colleges, with a comprehensive and well-rounded collection of those classical narratives on which the early history of the United States is founded, or of those narratives which, if not precisely classical, hold the most important place as sources of American history anterior to 1700. The reasons for undertaking such a project are for the most part obvious. No modern history, however excellent, can give the reader all that he can get from the ipsissima verba of the first narrators, Argonauts or eyewitnesses, vivacious explorers or captains courageous. There are many cases in which secondary narrators have quite hidden from view these first authorities, whom it is therefore a duty to restore to their rightful position. In a still greater number of instances, the primitive narrations have become so scarce and expensive that no ordinary library can hope to possess anything like a complete set of the classics of early American history. The series is to consist of such volumes as will illustrate the early history of all the chief parts of the country, with an additional volume of general index. The plan contemplates, not a body of extracts, but in general the publication or republication of whole works or distinct parts of works. In the case of narratives originally issued in some other language than English, the best available translations will be used, or fresh versions made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Time travel, UFOs, mysterious planets, stigmata, rock-throwing poltergeists, huge footprints, bizarre rains of fish and frogs-nearly a century after Charles Fort's Book of the Damned was originally published, the strange phenomenon presented in this book remains largely unexplained by modern science. Through painstaking research and a witty, sarcastic style, Fort captures the imagination while exposing the flaws of popular scientific explanations. Virtually all of his material was compiled and documented from reports published in reputable journals, newspapers and periodicals because he was an avid collector. Charles Fort was somewhat of a recluse who spent most of his spare time researching these strange events and collected these reports from publications sent to him from around the globe. This was the first of a series of books he created on unusual and unexplained events and to this day it remains the most popular. If you agree that truth is often stranger than fiction, then this book is for you"--Taken from Good Reads website.

Book excerpt: This work is a history of the Pacific, the ocean that became a theatre of power and conflict shaped by the politics of Europe and the economic background of Spanish America. There could only be a concept of &the Pacific once the limits and lineaments of the ocean were set and this was undeniably the work of Europeans. Fifty years after the Conquista, Nueva Espaą and Peru were the bases from which the ocean was turned into virtually a Spanish lake.
