Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notable New Yorkers of 1896-1899: A Companion Volume to King's Handbook of New York-City Whoever thinks a faultless piece to see, Thinks what ne'er was, nor is, nor e'er shall be. The first edition of this book copies of 616 pages each is a notable single undertaking of these times. Each sheet is a solid form of 32 pages. Containing 128 portraits, every one of which must be brought out for its full value. As regards the printing or press-work A great newspaper sends its stereotyped page forms to its wonderful octuple presses. And in a few minutes its 16-page papers are being delivered, all folded, pasted and counted, at the rate of an hour. In fine book-making, only one side of a single sheet can be printed at a time on the best book presses, and instead of a few minutes to start it requires several days' careful preparation for a form one-quarter the size of a newspaper, and the book-printer does well to get off well-printed sheets of this character in two weeks. This volume, 20 different forms sheets. 36 x 50 inches - ou which two modern book presses have been kept constantly running for five months, shows the difference between book and newspaper work, and the time required accounts for many seeming discrepancies in the inscriptions. The printing was done by Bartlett 8: Company, and would tax the best capacity of any printing-house to equal it. Download or read book The Upper West Side written by Michael V. Susi and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Upper West Side of Manhattan, the residential and retail neighborhood between Central Park and the Hudson River, is famous for its liberalism, cosmopolitan culture, and appetizing. It is a neighborhood as diverse in its population as it is in its architecture. Known as Bloomingdale in the mid-19th century, it was renamed the West End by the century's end when real estate speculation and mass transportation made their way inevitably northward in Manhattan. It was at this time that the grand boulevards and avenues Central Park West, Broadway, Columbus Avenue, Amsterdam Avenue, West End Avenue, and Riverside Drive each quickly assumed their impressive and distinct characters.
Download or read book A Block in Time written by Christiane Bird and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gotham meets The Island at the Center of the World in this dazzling history of a single block in Manhattan from the Age of Exploration to the present. This is the story of New York City, told through the prism of one block, bordered by Twenty-third Street to the south, Twenty-fourth Street to the north, Fifth Avenue and Broadway to the east, and Sixth Avenue to the west. It's a story of forest and cement, bird cries and taxi horns, theaters and factories, gambling dens and gourmet foods. It's also the story of high life and low life, immigrants and tourists, farmers and aristocrats, crooked cops and moral reformers, toy stores and social climbers--from Solomon Pieters, a former slave who was the first owner of the block, to Alexander “Clubber” Williams, the notorious police officer of the 1870s who accepted bribes and wielded his club with equal impunity, to Marietta Stevens, whose Sunday-night socials and scheming became the stuff of legend. Greed and generosity, guilt and innocence, extravagance and degradation--all have flourished on this one Manhattan block, emblematic of the city as a whole. Venturing from the opulent halls of the Fifth Avenue Hotel to grimy Sixth Avenue brothels, from the era of the Lenape to that of the Dutch, from the Gilded Age to the twentieth century, when the block and the city were transformed into something closely resembling the Manhattan we know today, A Block in Time takes us on a dynamic, exhilarating tour of history. Welcome to New York, past and present, and hear all the sordid and edifying stories this small patch of land has to tell.

Download or read book Columbia University and Morningside Heights written by Michael V. Susi and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outgrowing its remarkably shortlived location in midtown Manhattan, Columbia College moved uptown in the mid1890s, not only transforming itself into an urban university under university president Seth Low, but also creating an urban campus guided by Charles McKim, William Rutherford Mead, and Stanford White's master plan. The university became a major constituent of what would be described as New York's Acropolis on Morningside Heights. It was preceded in this endeavor by the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine and St. Luke's Hospital, and it was soon joined by Barnard College, Teachers College, and Union Theological Seminary, among others. The arrival of the Interborough Rapid Transit Subway in 1904 spurred residential and retail development.
Download or read book The American West in Bronze 1850 1925 written by Thayer Tolles and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2013 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Themes of the American West have been enduringly popular, and 'The American West in Bronze' features sixty-five iconic bronzes that display a range of subjects, from portrayals of the noble Indian to rough-and-tumble scenes of rowdy cowboys to tributes to the pioneers who settled the lands west of the Mississippi. Fascinating texts offer a fresh look at the roles that artists played in creating interpretations of the "vanishing West"--Whether based on fact, fiction or something in-between. These artists, including Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington, embody a range of life experiences and artistic approaches."'The American West in Bronze, 1850-1925' is the first full-scale exhibition to explore the aesthetic and cultural impulses behind the creation of statuettes with American western themes, which have been so popular with audiences then and now. Both the exhibition and this accompanying catalogue offer a fresh look at the multifaceted roles played by these sculptors in creating three-dimensional interpretations of western life, whether based on historical fact, mythologized fiction, or most often, something in-between. Examples by such archetypal representatives of the West as Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell are complemented by the work of sculptors such as James Earle Fraser and Paul Manship, who contributed to the popularity of the American bronze statuette even though their western subjects were less frequent."--Publisher's description.
