Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “extraordinary” true story of the St. Louis, a German ship that, in 1939, carried Jews away from Hamburg—and into an unimaginable ordeal (The New York Times). On May 13, 1939, the luxury liner St. Louis sailed from Hamburg, one of the last ships to leave Nazi Germany before World War II erupted. Aboard were 937 Jews—some had already been in concentration camps—who believed they had bought visas to enter Cuba. The voyage of the damned had begun. Before the St. Louis was halfway across the Atlantic, a power struggle ensued between the corrupt Cuban immigration minister who issued the visas and his superior, President Bru. The outcome: The refugees would not be allowed to land in Cuba. In America, the Brown Shirts were holding Nazi rallies in Madison Square Garden; anti-Semitic Father Coughlin had an audience of fifteen million. Back in Germany, plans were being laid to implement the final solution. And aboard the St. Louis, 937 refugees awaited the decision that would determine their fate. Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan Witts have re-created history in this meticulous reconstruction of the voyage of the St. Louis. Every word of their account is true: the German High Command’s ulterior motive in granting permission for the “mission of mercy;” the confrontations between the refugees and the German crewmen; the suicide attempts among the passengers; and the attitudes of those who might have averted the catastrophe, but didn’t. In reviewing the work, the New York Times was unequivocal: “An extraordinary human document and a suspense story that is hard to put down. But it is more than that. It is a modern allegory, in which the SS St. Louis becomes a symbol of the SS Planet Earth. In this larger sense the book serves a greater purpose than mere drama.”

Download or read book Carole Lombard Movie Poster Book written by Greg Lenburg and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She made her screen debut in silent films. She was even one of the King of Comedy Mack Sennett's Bathing Beauties in dozens of slapstick comedy shorts. As her fame grew, she found her niche in screwball comedies of the 1930s, earning her the title of the Queen of Screwball Comedy. She is Carole Lombard. The Carole Lombard Movie Poster Book features a collection of vintage movie posters, poster art or publicity stills from 50 of her film appearances from Buck Jones' Hearts and Spurs (1923) to her final role in Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be (1942). Lombard, at age 12, made her screen debut in the silent film, A Perfect Crime (1921). Her first screwball comedy was Howard Hawks' Twentieth Century (1934). That led to her appearing in films such as Hands Across the Table (1935), My Man Godfrey (1936) and Nothing Sacred (1937). For her role in My Man Godfrey, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. By the end of the 1930s, in attempt to win an Oscar, Lombard tried serious roles. When that goal failed, she returned to comedy roles, appearing in Alfred Hitchcock's Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941) and Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be (1942), her final film role. Sadly, Lombard's career ended abruptly when she died at the age of 33 in an aircraft crash on Mount Potosi, Nevada. She was returning from a War Bond tour. In all, Lombard appeared in nearly 80 films, including many bit and uncredited roles in silent and sound films. This collection includes films for which promotional art was available. Clearly, although her career was tragically cut short, Carole Lombard left her mark. It's no wonder she is remembered as one of the definitive actresses of the screwball comedy genre and American comedy, and that she ranks among the American Film Institute's greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema.

Book The IRA on Film and Television

Download or read book The IRA on Film and Television written by Mark Connelly and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Republican Army (IRA) has for decades pursued the goal of unifying its homeland into a single sovereign nation, ending British rule in Northern Ireland. Over the years, the IRA has been dramatized in motion pictures directed by John Ford (The Informer), Carol Reed (Odd Man Out), David Lean (Ryan's Daughter), Neil Jordan (Michael Collins), and many others. Such international film stars as Liam Neeson, James Cagney, Richard Gere, James Mason and Anthony Hopkins have portrayed IRA members alternately as heroic patriots, psychotic terrorists and tormented rebels. This work analyzes celluloid depictions of the IRA from the 1916 Easter Rising to the peace process of the 1990s. Topics include America's role in creating both the IRA and its cinematic image, the organization's brief association with the Nazis, and critical reception of IRA films in Ireland, Britain and the United States.
