Book excerpt: George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Educator Alexis Wiggins provides a step-by-step guide for the implementation of Spider Web Discussion, covering everything from introducing the technique to creating rubrics for discussion self-assessment to the nuts-and-bolts of charting the conversations and using the data collected for formative assessment. Book Writing Spaces 1

Download or read book Writing Spaces 1 written by Charles Lowe and published by Parlor Press LLC. This book was released on 2010-06-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volumes in Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing offer multiple perspectives on a wide-range of topics about writing, much like the model made famous by Wendy Bishop’s “The Subject Is . . .” series. In each chapter, authors present their unique views, insights, and strategies for writing by addressing the undergraduate reader directly. Drawing on their own experiences, these teachers-as-writers invite students to join in the larger conversation about developing nearly every aspect of craft of writing. Consequently, each essay functions as a standalone text that can easily complement other selected readings in writing or writing-intensive courses across the disciplines at any level. Topics in Volume 1 of the series include academic writing, how to interpret writing assignments, motives for writing, rhetorical analysis, revision, invention, writing centers, argumentation, narrative, reflective writing, Wikipedia, patchwriting, collaboration, and genres.

Book Writing Assignments Across University Disciplines

Download or read book Writing Assignments Across University Disciplines written by Roger Graves and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing Assignments Across the University Curriculum as a whole asks and answers these questions: What kinds of documents do students write in a wide range of university degree programs in Canada? How do instructors structure those writing assignments? That is, who is the audience for the assignments? Do students get formative feedback as they develop their documents? Do the patterns we found in a small liberal arts college (Graves, Hyland, and Samuels 2010) occur in other kinds of universities? We took our cue from an article by Anson and Dannels (2009) who pointed us toward the idea that students experience a curriculum through their degree progress in an academic program. Consequently, we needed to map the writing assignments according to how different departments organized these degree programs. Results that were organized by curricular unit (departments, faculties or colleges, or programs/units) were more significant than general statistics because students would progress through these courses to a degree. Several chapters in the book describe how this kind of curricular mapping provided a spark for curricular reform in Engineering, Education, and an entire small university. The last two chapters report on the instructors perspective on their assignments: what they were intending to do, and why they both resisted and engaged in curricular discussions.

Book Teaching Games and Game Studies in the Literature Classroom

Download or read book Teaching Games and Game Studies in the Literature Classroom written by Tison Pugh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Games and Game Studies in the Literature Classroom offers practical suggestions for educators looking to incorporate ludic media, ranging from novels to video games and from poems to board games, into their curricula. Across the globe, video games and interactive media have already been granted their own departments at numerous larger institutions and will increasingly fall under the purview of language and literature departments at smaller schools. This volume considers fundamental ways in which literature can be construed as a game and the benefits of such an approach. The contributors outline pedagogical strategies for integrating the study of video games with the study of literature and consider the intersections of identity and ideology as they relate to literature and ludology. They also address the benefits (and liabilities) of making the process of learning itself a game, an approach that is quickly gaining currency and increasing interest. Every chapter is grounded in theory but focuses on practical applications to develop students' critical thinking skills and intercultural competence through both digital and analog gameful approaches.

Book Assignments Across the Curriculum

Download or read book Assignments Across the Curriculum written by Dan Melzer and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Assignments across the Curriculum, Dan Melzer analyzes the rhetorical features and genres of writing assignments through the writing-to-learn and writing-in-the-disciplines perspectives. Presenting the results of his study of 2,101 writing assignments from undergraduate courses in the natural sciences, social sciences, business, and humanities in 100 postsecondary institutions in the United States, Assignments across the Curriculum is unique in its cross-institutional breadth and its focus on writing assignments. The results provide a panoramic view of college writing in the United States. Melzer's framework begins with the rhetorical situations of the assignments—the purposes and audiences—and broadens to include the assignments' genres and discourse community contexts. Among his conclusions is that courses connected to a writing-across-the-curriculum (WAC) initiative ask students to write more often, in a greater variety of genres, and for a greater variety of purposes and audiences than non-WAC courses do, making a compelling case for the influence of the WAC movement. Melzer's work also reveals patterns in the rhetorical situations, genres, and discourse communities of college writing in the United States. These larger patterns are of interest to WAC practitioners working with faculty across disciplines, to writing center coordinators and tutors working with students who bring assignments from a variety of fields, to composition program administrators, to first-year writing instructors interested in preparing students for college writing, and to high school teachers attempting to bridge the gap between high school and college writing.

Book Writing Effective Course Assignments

Download or read book Writing Effective Course Assignments written by Elia Shabani Mligo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-degree and undergraduate students are both inexperienced essay writers who need close guidance to become effective writers. One of the puzzles which they encounter at the college and university after reporting for studies is the course assignments offered to them by their lecturers, which demand them to be critical thinkers and argumentative essay writers. In most colleges and universities, lecturers provide to students broad questions to answer in the form of essays, either in group or individual assignments. How should they turn the broad assignment questions provided to them by their lecturers into specific researchable topics for essays? How should they handle literature in order to obtain valuable information to answer the provided question? How should they construct an informed and convincing argument using the collected information as evidence? This book concerns these and other related questions. With its clear illustrations, the book is designed to be a self-study guide and to offer solutions to many struggling students in colleges and universities. At the same time, the book can be helpful for lecturers to instruct their students how to write effective course assignments in their respective courses.
