Book excerpt: Merriam Press World War 2 Memoir Series. This work is compiled from the daily diaries Martin kept during his service as a Private a member of the 529th Engineer Light Ponton Co. and the 866th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Pacific during World War II. This is a candid account of his everyday thoughts and activities as they happened. For this reason it is refreshing in its honesty. The work is illustrated by dozens of sketches the author made on the scene throughout the war, depicting daily life and activities, as well as the camps, harbors, bridges, airfields, and other engineering projects. While not trained as an artist, Martin's sketches are simplistic and yet they record much that would otherwise have been unseen. 1 photo, 69 drawings, 3 documents.

  • Author : Gary Burns
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2016-10-04
  • ISBN : 1476626464
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Shipmates written by Gary Burns and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 1944, 78 U.S. Navy sailors and officers climbed aboard a ship just 150 feet long and 23 feet wide, and headed toward the sound of gunfire. One of a class of gunboats known as "mighty midgets," LCS 52 carried an arsenal equal to ships twice its size. Yet its shallow draft enabled it to maneuver to within a few hundred feet of any beach. Packed inside the tiny craft, the diverse crew were farmers, students, cooks and teachers. They ranged from age 17 to middle-aged--a few had seen combat in the Atlantic and the Pacific. This book tells the story of the ship's extensive service in World War II's Pacific Theater. Most of the crew survived the war, as did LCS 52 itself, serving in the U.S. Navy and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force until 1958, when it was decommissioned and used for artillery practice. A roll call of crew members is included, with biographical information when available.

Book Combat Engineer Pacific Theater

Download or read book Combat Engineer Pacific Theater written by Jay Divine and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combat Engineer, Pacific Theater looks at the daily lives of ordinary young men who found themselves with a unique job to do at an extraordinary time and place in history. It tells the mostly untold story of the armys combat engineering battalions in the Pacific in World War II. As their name implies, the role of these soldiers was unique. They were trained both in construction and in combat, and were called upon to do both. With every step of the way contested, their job was to build an infrastructure for crossing the worlds biggest ocean, to take the fight to an implacable enemy where he lived. The focus is the experiences of the men in the ranks of the Thirty-Fourth Engineer Combat Battalion. Part of the Armys Twenty-Seventh Infantry Division, the battalion participated in two of the three largest and bloodiest amphibious assaults in military history, those of Saipan and Okinawa.

  • Publisher : CreateSpace

Download or read book The Corps of Engineers written by Karl C. Dod and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions of the Corps of Engineers to victory in war, and to our country's peacetime history, are well known and appreciated. The skill and versatility of this talented body of soldiers met a supreme test in operations against the Japanese, many of which were conducted in the most primitive and undeveloped regions of the world. Engineers built the Alaska Highway, Canol, and the Ledo Road in Burma. They cleared the jungles to build airfields for heavy bombers and supervised the work of Filipinos, Chinese, and Melanesians as they built runways by hand. They built ports, roads, and docks where none had existed. Indeed, one of the most familiar recollections of the U.S. veteran of the war against Japan is the ubiquitous engineer operating a bulldozer.
