Book excerpt: Joseph Conrad’s thrilling history of a fictional South American country, its precious resources, and the men who will decide its fate The fictional country of Costaguana, loosely based on Colombia, has suffered a long string of despots more interested in lining their pockets than strengthening the nation. Discontent simmers throughout the land, but in the major port city of Sulaco, industry chugs along. Keeping the silver flowing are capable men like Nostromo, a loyal and proficient longshoreman for the shipping company that transports boatloads of the precious ore. When an unexpected military coup shakes up the country, Nostromo finds himself entrusted with hiding an untold fortune from the encroaching revolution. Nostromo must balance his loyalty to Sulaco’s industrialists against the country’s financial health and the intentions of the insurgents. In this intricate novel, Joseph Conrad combines politics, adventure, revenge, and revolution to illustrate how power and money can corrupt even the most righteous of men. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Nostromo - A Tale of the Seaboard (Unabridged Deluxe Edition)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Nostromo: A Tale of the Seaboard is a 1904 novel, set in the fictitious South American republic of "Costaguana". Conrad set his novel in the mining town of Sulaco. The book has more fully developed characters than any other of his novels, but two characters dominate the narrative: Señor Gould and the eponymous anti-hero, the "incorruptible" Nostromo. In his "Author's Note" Conrad relates how, as a young man of about seventeen, while serving aboard a ship in the Gulf of Mexico, he heard the story of a man who had stolen, single-handedly, "a whole lighter-full of silver". But Conrad forgot about the story until some twenty-five years later when he came across a travelogue in a used bookshop in which the author related how he worked for years aboard a schooner whose master claimed to be that very thief who had stolen the silver. F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "I'd rather have written Nostromo than any other novel." Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), was a Polish author who wrote in English after settling in England. Conrad is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, though he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties. He wrote stories and novels, often with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an indifferent universe. He was a master prose stylist who brought a distinctly non-English tragic sensibility into English literature. Book excerpt: "Nostromo" is the most anxiously meditated of the longer novels which belong to the period following upon the publication of the "Typhoon" volume of short stories. I don't mean to say that I became then conscious of any impending change in my mentality and in my attitude towards the tasks of my writing life. And perhaps there was never any change, except in that mysterious, extraneous thing which has nothing to do with the theories of art; a subtle change in the nature of the inspiration; a phenomenon for which I can not in any way be held responsible. What, however, did cause me some concern was that after finishing the last story of the "Typhoon" volume it seemed somehow that there was nothing more in the world to write about.

Book excerpt: "Nostromo offers an intensely pessimistic portrayal of morally empty politicians in a fictional South American nation called Costaguana. Wracked by greed and materialism, Conrad''s characters have good intentions that give way to unchecked self-interest. It''s monumental in scope, adventurous in spirit, and crammed with surprisingly progressive details and insights.

Book excerpt: Set in the South American republic of 'Costaguana, ' it is an exciting, complicated story about capitalist exploitation and revolution on the national scene and about personal morality and corruption in individuals. Charles Gould's silver mine helps to maintain the country's stability and its reactionary government. Gould's idealistic preoccupation with the mine warps his character and makes him neglect his gentle wife, Dona Emilia. When the revolution comes, Gould puts a consignment of silver in the charge of Nostromo, the magnificent, 'incorruptible' capataz de cargadores ('foreman of the dock workers'). A chance happening makes Nostromo decide to bury the silver and pretend that it was lost at sea. He is eventually killed on the island where his riches are buried, when he is mistaken by his fiancee's father for a prowler. ... Conrad's characterization is strong, his narration is complex and oblique. The story starts halfway through the events of the revolution and proceeds by way of flashbacks and glimpses into the future.
