Book excerpt: Excerpt from Northwestern Fights and Fighters T will be noticed that this book differs from others of the american fights and fighters series, and especially its immediate predecessor, Indian Fights and Fighters, in that I am not the author of all or most of it. In response to a request for contributions from participants in the Modoc and Nez Perc wars, numerous papers were sub mitred, all of such high value, not only from an historic but from a literary point of View as well, that I had not the presumption to rewrite them myself not even the proverbial assurance of the historian would warrant that. Therefore, I have contented myself with writing a general and comprehensive account of each of the two wars considered, leaving to the actors themselves the telling in full of the detailed story of the splendid achieve ments in which they were making history. I can affirm, therefore, that never before has there been included in a single volume such a remarkable and interesting col lection of personal experiences in our Indian Wars as in this book. And as I admire the doers of the deeds so, also, do I admire the tellers of the tales. Their modesty, their restraint, their habit of relating adventures which stir the blood and thrill the soul as a mere matter of course. Not as famous as the Little Bighorn fight, the Nez Perce and Modoc Wars were prominent conflicts between whites and Native Americans that brought the period of Indian Wars to a close.Included in this book are accounts by Chief Joseph, Edward Godfrey, General O.O. Howard, and others who fought in what was then considered the northwest: Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California. An account and analysis of the Custer fight is also in this book, as is a letter by Libby Custer to the New York Times protesting the depiction of her late husband.Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the conflicts that changed the country forever.

Book Northwestern Fights Fighters

Book excerpt: The Indian wars of the north west This, the fifth volume in Cyrus Townsend Brady's well regarded series, American Fights and Fighters, differs somewhat in format from other its companion volumes. Whilst Brady is always informative, accurate, original and entertaining his books have a tendency to include material where the subject matter appears to have appealed to Brady at the time and was thereafter in need of a home in one of his works. This volume, Northwest Fights and Fighters, focuses specifically on two wars, the Nez Perc War and the Modoc War, which the United States Army fought against the indigenous Indian tribes of the north west in the period following the American Civil War. The Nez Perc War was fought against that tribe under Chief Joseph's inspired leadership and the Modoc War was a gruelling, bitter campaign fought in the inhospitable lava beds. The accounts and recollections of these two war comprise the entire book and Brady therefore deals with his subjects in some detail. He has particularly drawn upon the first hand narratives of those combatants who fought on both sides of the conflicts and this very much enhances the book's value, since these accounts rarely appear elsewhere in print. In the Nez Perc section Brady of course deals with the actions at White Bird Canyon, Cottonwood, Clearwater, Big Hole and all the pivotal aspects of the campaign. The Modoc War outraged the American people after the murder of the so called 'peace commissioners' by the Modoc leader Captain Jack and this and many other aspects of the campaign are dealt with in considerable depth. Leonaur have already published, or will publish all of Brady's Fights and Fighters series and together they provide a well regarded and classic library of Americans at war-particularly on the ever turbulent frontiers of its Westward expansion. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

A six-year veteran of the Seventh Cavalry, Windolph fought in Benteen?s troop on that fatal Sunday and recalls in vivid detail the battle that wiped out Custer?s command. Download or read book The Modoc War written by Robert Aquinas McNally and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a cold, rainy dawn in late November 1872, Lieutenant Frazier Boutelle and a Modoc Indian nicknamed Scarface Charley leveled firearms at each other. Their duel triggered a war that capped a decades-long genocidal attack that was emblematic of the United States’ conquest of Native America’s peoples and lands. Robert Aquinas McNally tells the wrenching story of the Modoc War of 1872–73, one of the nation’s costliest campaigns against North American Indigenous peoples, in which the army placed nearly one thousand soldiers in the field against some fifty-five Modoc fighters. Although little known today, the Modoc War dominated national headlines for an entire year. Fought in south-central Oregon and northeastern California, the war settled into a siege in the desolate Lava Beds and climaxed the decades-long effort to dispossess and destroy the Modocs. The war did not end with the last shot fired, however. For the first and only time in U.S. history, Native fighters were tried and hanged for war crimes. The surviving Modocs were packed into cattle cars and shipped from Fort Klamath to the corrupt, disease-ridden Quapaw reservation in Oklahoma, where they found peace even more lethal than war. The Modoc War tells the forgotten story of a violent and bloody Gilded Age campaign at a time when the federal government boasted officially of a “peace policy” toward Indigenous nations. This compelling history illuminates a dark corner in our country’s past.
