Book Handbook of Frogs and Toads of the United States and Canada

Download or read book Handbook of Frogs and Toads of the United States and Canada written by Albert Hazen Wright and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preeminent naturalists Albert Hazen Wright and Anna Allen Wright spent years assembling the wealth of material on frogs and toads appearing in this widely used handbook, the third edition of which was originally published in 1949. With abundant black-and-white photographs, colorful descriptions, journal notes from the field, and excerpts from the literature, their personalized natural history emphasizes amphibians observed in the wild. In a foreword to the 1995 paperback edition, Roy McDiarmid, a foremost specialist on frogs and toads, brings the book into historical perspective and supplies information to bring it up to date. Accounts of more than 100 species and subspecies cover such topics as common and scientific names, range, habitat, size, and general appearance, as well as color, structure, voice, and breeding. Separate keys are given for secondary sexual characteristics, eggs, tadpoles, families, and species. Generous quotations from the Wrights' field journals give the reader a sense of the problems and satisfactions of their work.

Book Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles of California

Download or read book Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles of California written by Robert C. Stebbins and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ". . . encourage[s] hope and resilience in times of devastating damage."—New York Review of Books This user-friendly guide is the only complete resource that identifies and describes all the amphibians and reptiles—salamanders, frogs and toads, lizards, snakes, and tortoises and turtles—that live in California. The species are described in richly detailed accounts that include range maps, lifelike color paintings by Robert C. Stebbins, clear drawings of various life stages including eggs, notes on natural history, and conservation status. Easy-to-use keys for every order help identify species, and informative chapters cover more general topics including evolution, habitat loss, and photography. Throughout, anecdotes and observations reveal new insights into the lives of California’s abundant but often hidden amphibians and reptiles.

Book California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern

Download or read book California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern written by Robert C. Thomson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important hotspots of herpetological biodiversity in the United States, California is home to many endemic amphibians and reptiles found nowhere else on earth. Many of these taxa have unique ecological and morphological specializations, and their management is an important conservation challenge. Increasing climate change impacts, human development, and extreme drought mean many of these species face an ever-greater risk of extinction. California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern provides an up-to-date synthesis of the current state of knowledge regarding the biology and conservation risks faced by 45 of California’s most sensitive amphibian and reptile species. With the goal of enhancing management based on the best available science, the authors developed a novel set of risk metrics to identify special concern species and the threats they face, including population declines, range size and restrictions, and ecological specializations and niche restrictions. In addition to detailed species accounts, this book provides a quantitative analysis of the conservation status and pressing management issues facing individual species and the state’s amphibian and reptile fauna as a whole. The volume focuses on identifying threats, concrete recommendations for management and recovery, and future research needs. The text is complemented by detailed distribution maps, color photos, and graphs. Written in nontechnical language, California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern will be a valuable resource to a broad range of users from resource managers, field biologists, and academic herpetologists to students and recreational naturalists. Published in association with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive species have come to dominate 3% of the Earth’s ice-free surface, constituting one of the most serious ecological and economic threats of the new millennium, and freshwater systems are particularly vulnerable. This book examines the identity, distribution, and impact of freshwater non-indigenous species and the dynamics of their invasion. It focuses on old and new invaders and provides a starting point for further research.

Book Spatial Ecology and Site Occupancy of the Northern Red legged Frog Rana Aurora in a Coastal Dune Environment

Download or read book Spatial Ecology and Site Occupancy of the Northern Red legged Frog Rana Aurora in a Coastal Dune Environment written by Carrie M. Sendak and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The southern distribution of the northern red-legged frog (Rana aurora) extends only into the three most northern coastal counties of California and seems to be restricted to the coastal belt. Because of recent declines in the population and destruction of its habitat, the California Department of Fish and Game has declared it a Species of Special Concern in California and it is also federally listed as a Sensitive Species by the US Forest Service. This study investigated the spatial distribution and habitat selection of the species on the North Spit of Humboldt Bay, CA in a locally isolated dune environment.
