Book excerpt: Excerpt from Northern Rebellion and Southern Secession Many able writers of the South have done nobly in their treatment of the period, the historical data of which I here review; I fully recognize my indebtedness to them; yet I have sought to prove my fundamental premises by evidence which cannot be suspected of prejudice in favor of the South. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicles of the Rebellion of 1861: Forming a Complete History of the Secession Movement From Its CommencementThe events connected with the Secession movements of the Southern States, and which roused the people of the North. American continent to the highest state of political excitement, will be long held in remembrance. The spectacle of a people so happy and prosperous living under a Constitution which it was their pride and boast to regard as the most glorious under the sun - a Constitution which, from the expansive character of its prin ciples and provisions, conferred upon its citizens a greater amount of political power, and secured to them 'a larger ex tent of civil and religious liberty, than the subjects of any other government - repub lican or monarchical - plunged into all the dire calamities, the horrors and the sufferings of Civil War, is painful in the extreme. But the ultimate result must be beneficial to the country at large. Although its commercial progress may be arrested in its onward career, and the de v010pment of its agricultural, manufac turing and mineral resources, for a time be neglected, the Constitution and laws will come out of the fiery ordeal purged and purified of every corruption which time has attached to the governmental system of the United States.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vindication of Secession and the South From the Strictures of Rev. R. J. Breckinridge, D. D., LL. D., In the Danville Quarterly Review Nothing remains for the author to discuss, under his fifth head, but the duty of the Government at Washington in relation to secession. Having assumed that this is a con solidated nation, secession comes to be denounced as sedi tion, anarchy and rebellion, which must be crushed by the central authority. By the express terms, as well by the very nature of the Federal Constitution, a secession ordi nance in the South is as totally void as a personal liberty law in the North can possibly be. There was no more le gal necessity, nor any more logical consistency, in diatribes about lack of power to coerce a State, in one case than in the other. The doctrine that the people of a State are citizens of the United States only through its own Constitution and Government, is pronounced a political falsehood, and the power is declared complete to execute the laws of the United States upon every citizen of the United States, where ever found. He declares it sheer folly to weaken the posture of the General Government towards the secession movement and is accordingly very severe upon those at the N orth who have united in protests against coercion, as all this but tends to avert the coming reaction which may save the country. His deliberate counsel, therefore, is, in this great emergency, that the General Government shall steadily but temperately enforce the laws, postal, revenue, and every other, in all the seceding States, in utter disre gard of all the ordinances these latter may have enacted, avoiding armed collision, except in repelling force by force. By this policy, to which he denies the term coercion, the voice that has not yet been heard, and the hand that has not yet been lifted - even the voice and the hand of this great nation - will be raised to restore the old Union to its former integrity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dew’s Apostles of Disunion has established itself as a modern classic and an indispensable account of the Southern states’ secession from the Union. Addressing topics still hotly debated among historians and the public at large more than a century and a half after the Civil War, the book offers a compelling and clearly substantiated argument that slavery and race were at the heart of our great national crisis. The fifteen years since the original publication of Apostles of Disunion have seen an intensification of debates surrounding the Confederate flag and Civil War monuments. In a powerful new afterword to this anniversary edition, Dew situates the book in relation to these recent controversies and factors in the role of vast financial interests tied to the internal slave trade in pushing Virginia and other upper South states toward secession and war.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andersonville Violets: A Story of Northern and Southern Life The writer has long felt that a story of Northern and Southern life might be written that would pre sent food for sound and healthful thought, unblinded by partisan feeling or sectional hatred. The war is over forever. It can never be fought again. We have but one flag. It is the duty of all patriotic citizens to lend their best efforts to the task of looking at the causes of the war and its results, fairly and intelligently. A story of Andersonville prison, told by a soldier in the Confederate army, suggested this volume. The Northern scenes are taken from life. The pictures of Southern life are taken from personal experience. An efiort has been made to give an exact report of the state of affairs found by one Northern immigrant. • Author : Shearer Davis Bowman
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press

Download or read book At the Precipice written by Shearer Davis Bowman and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did eleven slave states secede from the Union in 1860-61? Why did the eighteen free states loyal to the Union deny the legitimacy of secession, and take concrete steps after Fort Sumter to subdue what President Abraham Lincoln deemed treasonous rebellion? At the Precipice seeks to answer these and related questions by focusing on the different ways in which Americans, North and South, black and white, understood their interests, rights, and honor during the late antebellum years. Rather than give a narrative account of the crisis, Shearer Davis Bowman takes readers into the minds of the leading actors, examining the lives and thoughts of such key figures as Abraham Lincoln, James Buchanan, Jefferson Davis, John Tyler, and Martin Van Buren. Bowman also provides an especially vivid glimpse into what less famous men and women in both sections thought about themselves and the political, social, and cultural worlds in which they lived, and how their thoughts informed their actions in the secession period. Intriguingly, secessionists and Unionists alike glorified the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, yet they interpreted those sacred documents in markedly different ways and held very different notions of what constituted "American" values.

Book The Battles of the War for the Union

Download or read book The Battles of the War for the Union written by Prescott Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battles of the War for the Union: Being the Story of the Great Civil War From the Election of Abraham Lincoln to the Surrender at Appomaton The South had been contemplating rebellion for years, and had only refrained from attempting it because hitherto she had pretty generally had her own way. The Choice of Lincoln immediately determined their resolution. John B. Floyd, of Virginia, the Secretary of War under Buchanan, had quietly contrived that the arsenals of all the Northern States should be stripped of their arms and ammunition, and those warlike mate rials concentrated in the Southern section of the Union. South Carolina naturally led off in the Secession movement, her Ordinance of Secession being adopted on November 17, 1860; Georgia came next, and the remainder of the border (or planting) States quickly followed. Virginia joined two days after the fall of Sumter. On February 9, 1861, Jefferson Davis, of Mississippi, was declared President, and Alexander H. Stephens, of Georgia, Vice - President of the confederate states OF america. On March 4, 1861, the Confederate flag was unfurled from the State House at Montgomery, Alabama, and the Confederacy was inaugurated. As a result, his volume presents the views of all parties to the sectional conflict and offers a vivid portrait of the interaction between them.--American Historical Review "Refocuses our attention on an important but surprisingly neglected group--the Unionists of the upper South during the secession crisis, who have been too readily ignored by other historians.--Journal of Southern History
