Book excerpt: Volume 1. The British army used a system of high-tech watchtowers to survey the territories of Northern Ireland, and to observe the actions of the local people unter their occupation. These towers, constructed in the mid 1980s, primarily in the mountainous border region of South Armagh, were landmarks in a thirty year conflict euphemistically called "the Troubles". The Towers were demolished between 2000 and 2007 as part of the British government "Demilitarization" program for Northern Ireland. Prior to their demolition Donovan Wylie photographed the Towers, working at an elevated height made possible by military helicopter. -- Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: This report describes the development of a baseline system architecture designed to meet the basic requirements of an all-terrestrial backup communications system linking the Canadian North Warning System radar sites with the regional operations control center. The system consists of about 100 low-power digital repeaters, designed for installation using light helicopters. The report includes description of the design, development, and field testing of an experimental ultra-high-frequency (UHF) digital radio system built to demonstrate the system architecture. The system was installed and operated in the western Arctic to link two radar sites with the land telephone system at Inuvik. The system power comes from a combination of batteries and solar panels. The report presents results of signal strength tests and analyses conducted to obtain the characteristics of UHF propagation in the western Arctic for a variety of paths.

Book excerpt: Summarizes work on a project that aims at proposing a cost effective approach to solve radar registration problems currently existing in the North Warning System. The focus of the registration problems is the ghost track in regions of overlapping radar coverage. The report analyzes the registration algorithm currently used in the system and proposes some new registration algorithms, which will be evaluated by simulation and compared with the one currently used. It first reviews previous efforts at remedying the currently used algorithm and presents results of tests of these methods on pure two-dimensional data, noting the assumptions made and their role in the performance of those methods. Four new algorithms are then explained, based on two directions: modification of the present projection scheme and alternation of the order of projection and estimation. Advantages of the new algorithms are noted.
