Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred plant species of conservation priority in North Dakota were identified as species at risk throughout their range. Existing rankings of conservation need are based on major threats to these species including habitat alterations, invasive species, grazing, habitat loss, hydrological alteration, recreational land use, human disturbance, groundwater extraction, and pollution. Climate change could also threat species, but to date there has been no attempt to model its effects on conservation status of rare plants in North Dakota. This study does that. It integrates the vulnerability to climate change scores generated by NatureServe’s Climate Change Vulnerability Index with existing global and state ranks, and state ranks updated with NatureServe’s Rank Calculator. These factors were weighed and compared to other reginal state ranks and their vulnerability to climate change was prioritized as either a level I, II, or III, Level I being the most vulnerable and level III being the lest vulnerable. Information on distribution, population status, and trends was compiled from the North Dakota Game and Fish key habitat types. A spatial crosswalk was created between North Dakota plant species of conservation concern and North Dakota’s nine key landscape components. The crosswalk helped identify focus areas (plant communities) where there are higher frequencies of plant species vulnerable to climate change. Information on distribution, population status, and trends was compiled from ecoregions, landscape components, and focus areas defined by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department in the 2005 Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy.
