Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of North Carolina History The title of this book sufficiently explains its purpose and its scope. In it I have emphasized, as far as possi ble, the personalities of the men who have made our history rather than the events in which they were con cerned. The latter can be studied in the narrative histories of the State which of necessity must present but little or nothing of the former. Of course I do not mean that the great events in which these men were leaders have been neglected. The child who studies this book will acquire as much knowledge of the general history of the State as the average child in the grades is capable of assimilating. This book has been written under the impression that the children of North Caro lina have more knowledge of the great events of our history than of the great leaders; and under the con viction that knowledge of the latter is equally as important and even more interesting, to children, at least, than the former. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of North Carolina IN the year 1700, when people ocked from all parts of the christian world, to see the solemnity Of the grand jubilee at Rome, my intention at that time being to travel, I accidentally met with a gentleman, who had been abroad, and was very well acquainted with the ways of living in both Indies; of whom having made inquiry concern ing them, he assured me that Carolina was the best country I could go to; and, that there then lay a ship in the Thames in which I might have my passage. I laid hold on this Opportunity, and was not long on board, before we fell down the river and sailed to Cowes; where, having taken in some passengers, we proceeded on our voyage, 'till we sprung a leak, and were forced into the Islands of Scilly. Here we spent about ten days in refitting. In which time we had a great deal of diversion in fishing and shooting on those rocky islands. The inhabitants were very courteous and civil, especially the governor, to whose good company and favor, we were very much obliged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grandfather's Tales of North Carolina History, Vol. 9 Then we thought it might be a useful offering to the public and to our schools and perhaps give a new stimulus to the State love Of the rising generation and cause them to know more Of their illustrious progenitors, and to emulate their virtues and their patriotic deeds. One boulder was in our pathway. It costs labor to pre pare a book for publication. But we were raised to hard work and were never afraid Of it. But, in addition to that, there's much expense in money in getting a book be fore the public, and we never had the gift Of money-get ting and we were largely gifted with the talent for getting rid of it, which talent, we honestly confess, we have never hid in a napkin, but cultivated assiduously by constant practice - that is to say, when we had it to get rid of. However, we have never been an Elijah that the ravens had to feed. SO we looked around to accomplish by our wits what our purse refused to do. Book Guide to the Hall of History of North Carolina Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guide to the Hall of History of North Carolina Classic Reprint written by FRED AN. OLDS and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Hall of History of North Carolina The Hall of History of North Carolina was first established by Fred A. Olds, as the director, in the west room of the State Museum, December 15, 1902. The installation, of objects began that day. Mr. Oldsbegan the collection twenty years before. Knowing this fact, Governor Alfred M. Scales in 1885 wrote a letter specially commending this work, saying that he hoped it would bring about the keeping of North Carolina relics in the State and prevent their dispersion in other parts of the country. The State Department of Agriculture provided a room for the historical collection, and the title "Hall of History" was given it by the director. The result of providing such a place was information as to the location of great numbers of objects. Visits were made to about fifty counties in a search for others. In ten years the hall was full, thousands of objects having been gathered, some coming from other States and all having historical value and forming a part of a connected story. Photographs were taken and used in illustrating the history of North Carolina. Special studies were made of the life of the Cherokee and Croatan Indians. Pictures were made of many historic buildings and scenes. Many valuable gifts were made and a generous spirit was shown by owners of relics in giving or lending these or allowing photographs or sketches to be made of them. The Hall of History remained in the Agricultural Building until 1914, when it was moved to its present quarters in the State Administration Building. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of North Carolina, Vol. 1: With Maps and IllustrationsIn entering upon his work, the writer avails himself of the opportunity briefly to explain his proposed plan, as in some of its features, it departs from established historical models. A mere chronologically accurate narrative of important public events does not in his view constitute history; though of it, such a narrative properly forms a part. He has supposed that the real history of a State is to be read in the gradual progress of its peo ple in intelligence, refinement, industry, wealth, taste, civilization, &c. The public events that transpire are but the exponents of the condition of the inhabitants, in these and other particulars.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Syllabus of North Carolina History 1584 1876 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Syllabus of North Carolina History 1584 1876 Classic Reprint written by William Kenneth Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of North Carolina History 1584-1876 There is no general history of North Carolina based on the sources covering all phases of the State's development. Hence in the courses on North Carolina history at Trinity and the University of North Carolina extensive use is made of monographs, special works, magazine articles, and to a lesser degree of the sources. This Syllabus is based on the lectures and required readings in North Carolina history at the two institutions. The authors hope that it may prove of value outside of college classes. For all who use it the following suggestions are offered: While the bibliography is not exhaustive, many items cited are out of print. Many of these may be found in old libraries, especially those of lawyers and public men who were active in the affairs of the past. The collection of such material forms a most interesting and instructive pursuit. A set of the Colonial and State Records may be found in every County Court House and in most of the public libraries. The authors have purposely made little use of studies in biography. They believe that a knowledge of institutional and social development is a prerequisite for the intelligent understanding of the services of public men. Most of the biographical material available is lacking in this very element. However, exercises in biography may supplement the outlines here published. The study of state history should include the study of local county history. For such a purpose an outline (No. XCIV) is reprinted from North Carolina Day Program with the consent of Mr. R. D. W. Connor. For several suggestions and references the authors are indebted to Mr. W. H. Hoyt, of New York City.
