Book White Evangelical Racism

Download or read book White Evangelical Racism written by Anthea Butler and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American political scene today is poisonously divided, and the vast majority of white evangelicals play a strikingly unified, powerful role in the disunion. These evangelicals raise a starkly consequential question for electoral politics: Why do they claim morality while supporting politicians who act immorally by most Christian measures? In this clear-eyed, hard-hitting chronicle of American religion and politics, Anthea Butler answers that racism is at the core of conservative evangelical activism and power. Butler reveals how evangelical racism, propelled by the benefits of whiteness, has since the nation's founding played a provocative role in severely fracturing the electorate. During the buildup to the Civil War, white evangelicals used scripture to defend slavery and nurture the Confederacy. During Reconstruction, they used it to deny the vote to newly emancipated blacks. In the twentieth century, they sided with segregationists in avidly opposing movements for racial equality and civil rights. Most recently, evangelicals supported the Tea Party, a Muslim ban, and border policies allowing family separation. White evangelicals today, cloaked in a vision of Christian patriarchy and nationhood, form a staunch voting bloc in support of white leadership. Evangelicalism's racial history festers, splits America, and needs a reckoning now.

Book American Christianities

Download or read book American Christianities written by Catherine A. Brekus and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the founding of the first colonies until the present, the influence of Christianity, as the dominant faith in American society, has extended far beyond church pews into the wider culture. Yet, at the same time, Christians in the United States have disagreed sharply about the meaning of their shared tradition, and, divided by denominational affiliation, race, and ethnicity, they have taken stances on every side of contested public issues from slavery to women's rights. This volume of twenty-two original essays, contributed by a group of prominent thinkers in American religious studies, provides a sophisticated understanding of both the diversity and the alliances among Christianities in the United States and the influences that have shaped churches and the nation in reciprocal ways. American Christianities explores this paradoxical dynamic of dominance and diversity that are the true marks of a faith too often perceived as homogeneous and monolithic. Contributors: Catherine L. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Christian Advocate, Vol. 101: January 5, 1956 In the early summer of 1942 we were dining one evening at the home of a friend when the blackout siren was sounded. Immediately all lights in the outside rooms were extinguished. As it was a balmy night we gathered at the open windows to watch the effect of the black-out in a city of myriad lights. The transformation was impressive. From the tenth floor window, the street seemed a well of darkness with eerie sounds rising from unseen persons. Then an air warden blew his whistle and called out that an apartment on the sixth floor was showing a light through the open door of an inner room. Then another whistle and another warning. And so on. It is a difficult task to attain a complete blackout in a city of multitudinous lights. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
