Book excerpt: So briefly there it might never have existed, the haiku is nevertheless a worldwide phenomenon. As you read each haiku here in the time it takes for a frog to swim the length of a pear leaf, your senses will fizz like a rocket landing in an armchair. When you take up this book, each haiku will be a path you'll follow then gladly lose. You'll wonder at visual jokes being made out of words. And just as the butterfly puts so much effort into being so light, you'll wonder, does the haiku compress or expand the world? Does it vanish into its possible meanings or is each haiku, like autumn leaves, competing to be the most strangely beautiful object on the forest floor? If Superman can dissolve into tears at a children's party, it is perfectly okay for you to be udder-punched by a newborn haiku of less than a dozen words coming at you from a deep white page. Kevin Brophy Emeritus Professor, University of MelbourneAlive with birds and frogs, suffused with the threat of bushfire and flood, these haiku sing with the uniqueness of Australian life. The skill on show is breathtaking, as distinctive individual voices lay bare moments of joy, loss, awareness and connection to inner and outer landscapes. I loved reading this tremendously strong collection. Esther Ottaway Winner, Tim Thorne Poetry Prize, Arts Tasmania Literary Awards, 2022

Book excerpt: A triple breakdown in relationships, work life, and health leaves Professor Denis Ladbrook teetering on the brink. Inspired by Carl Jung's idea that the ocean symbolizes the unconscious the great source of life, emotion, and soul Denis chooses to leave the city for the seaside hamlet of Yanchep, an hour's drive north of Perth, Western Australia. Tiptoeing down a steep dune track to the water's edge as dawn breaks each morning, Denis walks far along the beach, immersed in sounds of wind and waves. His sensations morph into words. Stumbling through emotional desolation and divorce, he trudges the ocean shore until he discovers the rhythm of the ancient Japanese poetic shape, haiku. Among the book's almost three hundred haikus, Denis includes thirty-two written by medieval Japanese poets. Over the year, the healing energy of the ocean, the ritual beat of walking, and actually writing the poems enabled Denis to let go and flow with the tides. Raw emotions allying with capricious ocean moods give the collection its energy, transforming brokenness to wholeness.

Book Haiku Before Haiku

Download or read book Haiku Before Haiku written by Steven D. Carter and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the rise of the charmingly simple, brilliantly evocative haiku is often associated with the seventeenth-century Japanese poet Matsuo Basho, the form had already flourished for three hundred years before Basho even began to write. These early poems, known as hokku, are identical to haiku in syllable count and structure but function differently as a genre. Whereas each haiku is its own constellation of image and meaning, hokku opens a a series of linked, collaborative stanzas in a sequence called renga. Under the mastery of Basho, hokku first gained its modern independence. His talents evolved the style into the haiku beloved by so many poets today& mdash;Richard Wright, Jack Kerouac, and Billy Collins being notable devotees. This anthology reproduces 300 Japanese hokku poems composed between the thirteenth and early eighteenth centuries, from the work of the courtier Nijo Yoshimoto to the genre's first "professional" master, Sogi, and his subsequent disciples. It also features twenty masterpieces by Basho himself. Steven Carter, a renowned scholar of Japanese poetry and prominent translator, includes an introduction covering the history of haiku and the form's aesthetics and classifies these poems according to style and context& mdash;distinguishing early renga from Haikai renga and renga from the Edo period, for example. His rich commentary and analysis illuminates each work, and he adds their romanized versions and notes on composition and setting, as well as brief descriptions of the poets and the times in which they wrote.
