Book The Strawberry in North America

Download or read book The Strawberry in North America written by S. W. Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strawberry in North America: History, Origin, Botany, and Breeding This book completes a survey of the strawberry as grown in North America. Modern cultural methods are presented in a companion volume, "Strawberry-Growing," and all of the more than 1800 North American varieties are described in Technical Bulletin 11, Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, Blacksburg, Virginia, "North American Varieties of the Strawberry." The present volume deals mainly with the origin and history of the North American type - one of the most interesting chapters in our pomology. The assistance of many pomologists and cultivators is gratefully acknowledged, more especially of Matthew Crawford, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. A number of the illustrations are borrowed, for which acknowledgment is made in the List of Illustrations. Book Systematics and Geographic Distribution of the American Strawberry Species

Download or read book Systematics and Geographic Distribution of the American Strawberry Species written by Günter Staudt and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1999-07-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this detailed investigation of the natural variation, geographical distribution, and modern taxonomy of the American Fragaria strawberry species, three species with four subspecies each and two hybrid species are recognized taxonomically. The author also discusses the phylogenetic relationships of the diploid and octoploid species and subspecies and their postpleistocene migration. The American octoploid Fragaria species are known as the ancestors of the large-fruited garden strawberries, so this study is of great horticultural interest and may contribute to the preservation of these species and their further use in strawberry breeding.

Book North American Cornucopia

Download or read book North American Cornucopia written by Ernest Small and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-09-23 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many North American plants have characteristics that are especially promising for creating varieties needed to expand food production, and there are excellent prospects of generating new economically competitive crops from these natives. The inadequacy of current crops to meet the food demands of the world’s huge, growing population makes the potential of indigenous North American food plants even more significant. These plants can also generate crops that are more compatible with the ecology of the world, and many also have inherent health benefits. Presenting detailed scholarship, a thoroughly accessible style, and numerous entertaining anecdotes, North American Cornucopia: Top 100 Indigenous Food Plants is a full-color book dedicated to the most important 100 native food plants of North America north of Mexico that have achieved commercial success or have substantial market potential. The introductory chapter reviews the historical development of North American indigenous crops and factors bearing on their future economic success. The rest of the book consists of 100 chapters, each dedicated to a particular crop. The book employs a user-friendly chapter format that presents the material in sections offering in-depth coverage of each plant. The first section of each chapter provides information on the scientific and English names of the plants, followed by a section on the geography and ecology of the wild forms, accompanied by a map showing the North American distribution. A section entitled "Plant Portrait" comprises a basic description of the plant, its history, and its economic and social importance. This is followed by "Culinary Portrait," concerned with food uses and culinary vocabulary. The chapters then provide an analysis of the economic future of each crop, discuss notable and interesting scientific or technological observations and accomplishments, and present extensive references.

Book The Illustrated Strawberry Culturist

Download or read book The Illustrated Strawberry Culturist written by Andrew S Fuller and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we closely examine the varieties of any one species of the Strawberry, we find that they resemble each other in their general habits or manner of growth. No one at all familiar with these plants would ever mistake an Alpine Strawberry for one of any other of the well-known species, and even the Hautbois Strawberry, which, in some respects, resembles the Alpines, is sufficiently distinct to be easily recognized. There are varieties of the Wood or Alpine species that produce no runners, growing in clumps or stools; still the foliage plainly shows their origin, and, as we have no hybrids between the Alpines and other species, there is no difficulty in recognizing them wherever found. But with the North and South American species or Virginian and Chilian Strawberries the line of demarcation is not so easily determined as formerly, because they hybridize so readily that their specific characteristics have become almost obliterated in the cultivated varieties.
