In fact the 3rd XFJ-2 was a F-86E with 4-20mm cannons instead of the Air Forces 6-.50 cal. machine guns. All other FJ-2s were completed with lengthened landing gear and a V-style tailhook. All production aircraft had folding wings and 4-20mm guns. The entire FJ-2 production was assigned to the Marines which equipped six front line fighter squadrons with it. These were VMF-122, VMF-232, VMF-235, VMF-312, VMF-334 and VMF-451. The book contains short histories of each of these squadrons as well as a first hand account of its flight testing. 85 b&w photos as well as 22 illustrations are included.

Based on the United States Air Force's F-86 Sabre, these aircraft featured folding wings, and a longer nose landing strut designed to both increase angle of attack upon launch and to absorb the shock of hard landings on an aircraft carrier deck. Although sharing a U.S. Navy designation with its distant predecessor, the straight-winged FJ-1 Fury, the FJ-2/-3 were wholly different aircraft. The FJ-4 Fury was a complete structural redesign of the FJ-3.

The U.S. Navy had officially entered the jet age. Built by North American, the Fury shared a prototype with the Air Force¿s F-86 Sabre. When the FJ-1¿s straight wing design proved less than satisfactory, North American provided the Navy with enhanced F-86Es. Designated the FJ-2, the plane flew primarily with the U.S. Marine Corps. An enhanced version, the FJ-3, debuted in 1953 and was deployed in late 1954. The plane served in a variety of duties, including as control aircraft for the Navy¿s Regulus nuclear cruise missile. The Fury remained with the fleet into the early 1960¿s. Over 1,100 were produced. This pilot¿s flight operating handbook was originally produced by the U.S. Navy. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety.

During that time the native population of the Western Hemisphere declined by as many as 100 million people. Indeed, as historian David E. Stannard argues in this stunning new book, the European and white American destruction of the native peoples of the Americas was the most massive act of genocide in the history of the world. Stannard begins with a portrait of the enormous richness and diversity of life in the Americas prior to Columbus's fateful voyage in 1492. He then follows the path of genocide from the Indies to Mexico and Central and South America, then north to Florida, Virginia, and New England, and finally out across the Great Plains and Southwest to California and the North Pacific Coast. Stannard reveals that wherever Europeans or white Americans went, the native people were caught between imported plagues and barbarous atrocities, typically resulting in the annihilation of 95 percent of their populations. Book excerpt: The F2H-3/4 Banshee ("Big Banjo") was a direct outgrowth of the F2H-1 and F2H-2 series of Korean war fighter and recon jets (see Naval Fighters #73 Early Banshees). It became the US Navy's first single seat all-weather carrier interceptor. To satisfy its mission the F2H-3/4 was required to have a significant increase in range. To accomplish this the internal fuel capacity was more than doubled by stretching the fuselage by 8 feet 1.6 inches. This gave the F2H-3/4 a combat range with tip tanks of 1,490 nautical miles. In addition to the fuselage extension, the tail surfaces of the F2H-3/4 were also redesigned. The horizontal tail was moved down to the rear of the fuselage tail cone and given a 10 degree dihedral. To accommodate the enlarged radar unit the four nose-mounted cannons were moved aft along the lower fuselage sides. The difference in the F2H-3 and F2H-4 was in the radar. The F2H-3 used the Westinghouse APQ-41 with a 28" dish and the F2H-4 was equipped with the Hughes APG-37 radar. The F2H-4 further differs from the -3 by having up-rated J34-WE-38 engines. The larger engines allowed for a service ceiling of 56,000 ft. The aircraft also had increased wing stations and was capable of carrying Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. The aircraft were active with the Navy and Marines from 1952 through 1959. It was operated by 31 active Navy and Marine squadrons which histories appear in the book along with squadron insignia. The book also includes a chapter on Royal Canadian F2H-3s.

It flew more strike missions than any other Navy aircraft and its losses in combat amounted to 37% of all Navy combat losses. The Navy lost 195 A-4s out of 530 total losses. The next highest losses were in the F-4 community with 75. A-4 losses, especially in the A-4E, were so heavy at times that squadrons had to re-equip with older A-4C's as there weren't enough A-4 E's to fill the squadrons. This small, nimble, rugged, and dependable bomber was the perfect surgical weapon for the day war over Vietnam. In fact, the A-4E/F with is five pylons could carry more than twice the tonnage of bombs that a B-17 or a B-24 could drop on Germany. This book is dedicated to the memory of Harry S. Gann.
