Book The Power of Renewables

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chinese Academy of Engineering
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2011-01-29
  • ISBN : 0309160006
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Power of Renewables written by Chinese Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-01-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and China are the world's top two energy consumers and, as of 2010, the two largest economies. Consequently, they have a decisive role to play in the world's clean energy future. Both countries are also motivated by related goals, namely diversified energy portfolios, job creation, energy security, and pollution reduction, making renewable energy development an important strategy with wide-ranging implications. Given the size of their energy markets, any substantial progress the two countries make in advancing use of renewable energy will provide global benefits, in terms of enhanced technological understanding, reduced costs through expanded deployment, and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to conventional generation from fossil fuels. Within this context, the U.S. National Academies, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), reviewed renewable energy development and deployment in the two countries, to highlight prospects for collaboration across the research to deployment chain and to suggest strategies which would promote more rapid and economical attainment of renewable energy goals. Main findings and concerning renewable resource assessments, technology development, environmental impacts, market infrastructure, among others, are presented. Specific recommendations have been limited to those judged to be most likely to accelerate the pace of deployment, increase cost-competitiveness, or shape the future market for renewable energy. The recommendations presented here are also pragmatic and achievable.

Book U S Japanese Energy Relations

Download or read book U S Japanese Energy Relations written by Charles Ebinger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, this collection of original papers highlights the major problems and challenges that lie ahead in U.S.-Japanese energy relations. Energy cooperation, both through joint projects and bilateral planning, has become an important barometer of the U.S. diplomatic relationship with Japan, as evidenced by the high-level U.S.-Japan Energy Working Group set up in January 1984 following Prime Minister Nakasone's visit to Washington. Contributions to this book detail the problems posed by energy security differences and uncertain oil markets; U.S. crude oil exports to Japan; and nuclear, coal solar-energy; and they consider the prospects for conflict over investment in Siberia and Asia

Book U s china Clean Energy Cooperation

Download or read book U s china Clean Energy Cooperation written by U S -China Economic and Security Review and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of rapid economic growth and heavy industrialization, China is currently one of the world's top energy consumers and the largest emitter of greenhouse gases. As a result, Chinese leaders have recently enacted a number of plans and directives with a specific focus on developing a cleaner energy policy and a lower carbon economy. In the 12th Five Year Plan, the Chinese government set ambitious goals in this regard, including increasing the use of clean and renewable energy sources, such as natural gas, wind, and solar. However, as China builds up its own clean energy industry, it has also adopted some policies that may disadvantage U.S. energy companies seeking to operate and sell their products and services inside of China. Indeed, China's "indigenous innovation" policy may preclude certain foreign manufacturing companies from qualifying for government-funded projects. Despite these differences, however, bilateral cooperation on clean energy is an area that both countries have indeed embraced. China and the U.S. account for nearly 60 percent of all the coal burned in the entire world. By working together and making joint budgetary commitments, the U.S. and China can accelerate advanced clean coal technology and enhanced environmental protection and help the economy in the meantime.

Book China s Energy Revolution in the Context of the Global Energy Transition

Download or read book China s Energy Revolution in the Context of the Global Energy Transition written by Shell International B.V. and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is an encyclopaedic analysis of the current and future energy system of the world’s most populous country and second biggest economy. What happens in China impacts the planet. In the past 40 years China has achieved one of the most remarkable economic growth rates in history. Its GDP has risen by a factor of 65, enabling 850,000 people to rise out of poverty. Growth on this scale comes with consequences. China is the world’s biggest consumer of primary energy and the world’s biggest emitter of CO2 emissions. Creating a prosperous and harmonious society that delivers economic growth and a high quality of life for all will require radical change in the energy sector, and a rewiring of the economy more widely. In China’s Energy Revolution in the Context of the Global Energy Transition, a team of researchers from the Development Research Center of the State Council of China and Shell International examine how China can revolutionise its supply and use of energy. They examine the entire energy system: coal, oil, gas, nuclear, renewables and new energies in production, conversion, distribution and consumption. They compare China with case studies and lessons learned in other countries. They ask which technology, policy and market mechanisms are required to support the change and they explore how international cooperation can smooth the way to an energy revolution in China and across the world. And, they create and compare scenarios on possible pathways to a future energy system that is low-carbon, affordable, secure and reliable.

Book Ecological Regions of North America

Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.
