Choosing to respond to bullying mindfully, in spite of their fears, is the beginning of a journey into true freedom. Book excerpt: You haven't read anything until you have read “Norman's Revenge” yet. Psycho touched on the subject of love and betrayal that resulted in murder, Bates Motel was too delicate. Norman is sitting on the bed watching his mother get undressed. No, Norman's Revenge goes much deeper than that. In Norman's Revenge Norman and his mother actually have sex. This is a story of lust, love, betrayal murder and revenge. The book starts out with Norma in the hospital having her baby boy. Norma's first pregnancy is as a result of rape. Norma's father raped Norma repeatedly ever since she was a little girl. After Norma's mother died from head wounds inflicted on her by Norma's father, Norma was the beneficiary of the abuse. When Norma got pregnant by her father, after being raped by her father for the umpteenth time, she had her first son she decided she wasn't going to take her father's crap any more. Norma knew her father didn't care anything about her and Norma just figured her father wouldn't care a thing about her son either. He used to care about the hotel but he didn't seem to care about that anymore. He just drank himself into a drunken stupor morning, noon and night. But just as expected when Norma comes home from the hospital after giving birth to Norman, her father rapes her again. As a result of this rape Norma is pregnant again. This has to stop, Norma thought. And it did. Norman grows up wanting to be left alone. He's quiet and soft spoken. Quite the opposite of his loud mouthed, demanding mother. Norman's little brother Nick is also quiet and minds his own business. After a series of incidents to Norman beyond Norman's control Norman lets people know he’s not a pushover anymore. Enough is enough. Now is the time for Norman to prove he is not what his mother turned out to be or tried to turn him into. Now is the time for Norman to get revenge on everybody and anybody who hurt, used and abused him, including his beloved mother.

Book Bullies and Mean Girls in Popular Culture

Download or read book Bullies and Mean Girls in Popular Culture written by Patrice A. Oppliger and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerous anti-bullying programs in schools across the United States have done little to reduce the number of reported bullying instances. One reason for this is that little attention has been paid to the role of the media and popular culture in adolescents' bullying and mean-girl behavior. This book addresses media role models in television, film, picture books, and the Internet in the realm of bullying and relational aggression. It highlights portrayals with unproductive strategies that lead to poor resolutions or no resolution at all. Young viewers may learn ineffective, even dangerous, ways of handling aggressive situations. Victims may feel discouraged when they are unable to handle the situation as easily as in media portrayals. They may also feel their experiences are trivialized by comic portrayals. Entertainment programming, aimed particularly at adolescents, often portray adults as incompetent or uncaring and include mean-spirited teasing. In addition, overuse of the term "bully" and defining all bad behavior as "bullying" may dilute the term and trivialize the problem.

  • Publisher : Yale University Press

Download or read book Leave No Child Behind written by James Comer and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The call-to-arms to “leave no child behind” in America has become popularly associated with the Bush administration’s education plan—a plan that actually diverges greatly from the ideals of the Children’s Defense Fund, which originated the concept. Here, in a bold and engaging new book, Dr. James Comer reclaims this now-famous exhortation as a tool for positive and substantive change. Far removed from the federal government’s focus on standardized testing as the panacea for our educational ills, Dr. Comer’s argument—drawn from his own experiences as the creator of the School Development Program—urges teachers, policymakers, and parents alike to work toward creating a new kind of school environment. In so doing, Dr. Comer reignites a crucial debate as he details the evolution and many successes of his School Development Program since its inception thirty-five years ago, and he illustrates how his model for change has proven effective in public schools throughout the country. Most important, he offers proof that students from all backgrounds can learn at a high level, adopt positive behavioral attitudes, and prepare for a fulfilling adult life, if they learn in schools that provide adequate support for their complete development--schools that know that leaving no child behind should be much more than just a convenient political slogan.
